I hope everyone plays honestly and doesn't insert coins to continue on games like this that keep your score after continuing.
Indeed. I will have to start paying attention to this in future games. I think in the future if a game preserves your score after continuing, I will probably not use it in the tourney.

No game should be chosen where continues or cheats could be used.
How about a *Boot Hill* online deathmatch?

I am currently waiting to hear Gapporin's opinion on this. As the vice chairman of the FABULOUS 17th Annual Digital Press MAME League World Championships here at the luxurious MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, his opinion carries much weight.
Could you please hand me my caviar? Thanks.
I guess since I'm part of the administration on this, I'd better weigh in with a few things: Yes, we are planning on adopting the "2 games per week" style match-ups. We will post the first week's games starting next Monday.
This will also give me and Jibba both a chance to pick a game each week. Although I can't speak for Jibba, his choices will probably reflect the left side of the brain: logical and rational. While my choices will more reflect the right side of the brain: randomness and obscurity. Better brush up on your Japanese! Mwahaha.
In the end, I think that this is the best plan for everybody. I can't wait to see this go full force come next week.

Well I'm not gonna mince words here but... I friggin hate this game :D
Beat-em-ups always seem to pull out the cheese factor. Anyone gotten to the boss of stage 2 yet? A majority of the time I can't even come close to beating this guy, and I have yet to make it to stage 3 with a player in reserve. He has a close attack, a long attack, an air attack, a speed advantage, a throw, a horse - it's just the programmers were saying "it's about time to collect a quarter" O_O
I also wish they had just added a third button for Guarding. It would have made this game slightly more playable.
Anyways, I'm done ranting. I'm still goin for the high score :P

How bout .inp's? Heck in mame32 it's just FILE -> "Play and record input" and you're off! Zip em up and it's a nice record right there of your gameplay and score.
I don't know whether they should be mandatory or not.. I'm kind of leaning against it. But I think if you know how to do it and think it's simple to do.. then why not throw it in there as a courtesy with your score as they're just handy to have.
They wouldn't all have to be reviewed either. And even if they were, if you have a fast pc you can simply load it up then hit F10 to watch the entire recorded game in fast motion.
See like in this case. Not that there's any suspected cheating or anything, but maybe for the highest score in Knights of the Round, you could just quickly review to see if there were any continues for example.. stuff like that.

If you do submit a .inp file, please compress the file in a .zip archive. This greatly lowers the size of the .inp file. A 2MB .inp file can easily fit into a 50K or less .zip file.

There should be a "World" romset in there, which is the one that we are using.

OK just to update everyone, Gapporin and I have come to an agreement and finalized the gaming schedule. We will have 2 games per week for the next 12 weeks. Including the game we are currently playing, that will be a regular season of 25 games. I will post tonight what the "matchups" actually are between players. Through the course of the season, your scores will constantly be added together (see the column on the far right on the standings sheet). At the end of the regular season, the player with the highest total score will win a special prize. We will also continue the practice of giving out mini-prizes to each week's winners, whether they be meseta or actual items that will be mailed to you.
I have also heard back from Joe (DP), and we will DEFINITELY be giving out virtual trophies to the top three winners to place in their DP item inventories. These will be one-of-a-kind trophies not available for purchase in the DP shops, and will therefore be the ultimate in bragging rights. I will post gifs of them in the main league thread when the artist finishes them.
Please continue to post any comments, suggestions, or trash talkking here in this thread.
Hope everyone is having fun!
Chris

Okay, the season schedule sounds great. But I just have one beef: PLEASE do not pick another game that rolls your old score into your next game. You don't really need to have people sending inp files if you steer clear of the score-saving games. Cheating on regular score-ending games is more trouble than it's worth, but for a game like KotR, cheating is as simple as pressing "5". I'm glad this happened in the first game of the season and not when it's going to decide who makes the playoffs. It just makes high scores highly suspect. Instead of looking like a great player, you look like the biggest cheater. So please test future games and avoid them if they do this.
Okay, that's the end of my rant.
One more thing... are scores going to be posted publicly after each week? I certainly hope so.

OK I have heard enough concern over the ease of cheating with this game that INP files will have to be mandatory. I have sent everyone an e-mail about it. Gapporin and I will make sure that none of the subsequent games used in the league allow the score to be preserved when continuing your game.
Sorry for the hassle.
Also, to answer Dr. Morbis' question, scores will be posted at the end of each week.

Stupid question, but MacMAME 0.88 (the latest build, may I add) does not support INP recording (or any recording of gameplay). So, how am I supposed to record my game, then?

At the MacMAME main interface, highlight the game you want to play, click the "misc" tab, and click "save replay". The game should start, and will record your gameplay.

Thanks for saying how one does a INP recording.
So you're saying that even though all the other games are not going to have the score carried over with a new credit we're STILL going to have to send INP files in place of screenshots with our e-mail submissions? Or are both needed now? Sorry for the confusion.
As for the game itself -- never heard of it. :P I'm sure it's good, being from Capcom, but I just never saw the game.
Since I want to be fair to all my fellow players, read the entry on this game at KLOV -- it's a pretty large entry and has some hints and tips.

No, man. INP is required for this game because of the ease of cheating. We will make sure that in future games, your score does not stay with you if you continue your game, so INP files will not be neccesary.

Okay, thanks. :)
Tried the game a couple times tonight. Pretty hard. Got to the Stage 2 boss and about 39k in points.
I can't see this as being a high scoring game for anyone. You only have the one credit and one reserve life, although it seems you can earn more with enough points. There's things you can do to maxmize your point spread (move quickly and don't attack the treasures) but the further you can make it in this seven stage game the more chance for points, of course. It's hard to say what someone here can pull off for a top score, unless someone is quite good with this game. Given how you seem to rack up about 20k in points on average a stage, I think someone could break 100k by Sunday if they are lucky and/or good.
I want that person to be me. :P
Oh, one more suggestion if possible -- I'd LOVE to see the winning person's .INP file (the person with the most persons). Can it be posted for download?

I think that's a great idea! Although after this round I don't think we'll see many more games in the competition that require an .inp made.

Thanks for the heads up... however, it seems that I can either use a joystick or save a game. Even though MacMAME .96 came out yesterday, it doesn't implement save states properly (clicking on "Save replay" makes MacMAME crash). I tried downgrading, but then I lose joystick support... and I can't save my game either (it open the "save as" window, but if I try to load the replay, nothing happens).
I'll try tonight with an older version of MacMAME for OS 9, to see whether the save replay feature works properly there (joystick support wasn't an issue in OS9 because of InputSprokets).

Well then how am I supposed to save the .inp file??? And I was just trying to see if I could play the savefile...
Does any of the players in this league use MacMAME aside from me, to at least tell me what I'm doing wrong, or which version MacMAME actually works properly in terms of saving the inp file?

savegames are not the same as recordings, afaik you decide to record the game before you play and MAME automatically saves a video file (=INP), whereas savegames are something you do while playing, it just saves the current state (inp files save every button pressed)

I don't know anything about macs or macmame, but if you don't get an answer here you might want to try on the Twin Galaxies forums. They use inp files for world record verifications and I'm sure someone there knows the answer.

Does Knights of the Round NOT add 1 to your score upon every continue like a lot of Capcom games then?
Easiest way to tell how many times you've continued in a Capcom game by the last two digits of the score...

Ooh, thats a good tip! Thanks, Mayhem!
Chris
EDIT: OK, it does not do what you say, but I does something at least as good. Directly to the left of the score is a counter, which counts how many times you use a coin to continue. In any screenshot submitted, that counter should always be at zero.
So I guess INP files are no longer neccesary. Right, Gapporin?

The instructions I gave you were for creating a MacMAME version of an INP file. I dont know what hydr0x is doing, other than confusing people. When did I say anything about a save game?
Try deleting the NVRAM folder in the MacMAME folder and see if that helps (I read that on a MacMAME discussion board).

No INP files required? I'm relieved to hear that! This means that I can actually play this game with my Dual Shock controller instead of the keyboard (to make a long story short, because of the switch to OSX - and the loss of InputSprocket - the OSX versions of MacMAME were not compatible with joysticks and controllers. MacMAME has only recently regained joystick/controller compatibility).

Sheesh, I followed specific instructions by Jibbajaba because I never recorded my MAME games before (even though I've been using MacMAME for years). It's not my fucking fault if this feature is not properly implemented in MacMAME, if at all. At least I tried to find a solution, even though there might not be any solution right now for us Mac users.
If you're so clever, give me a play-by-play account on how to save a .INP file in MacMAME.

Guys - hate to be a party pooper, but it only adds to that "continue" counter if you continue when the game is over. If you add a credit before the "Game Over" screen comes up, 2 lives are added to your reserve and it doesn't count as a continue. I'm gonna double check that right now.

I'm wondering if, because of all the confusion and now ill will (sort of), maybe we should have a new game. I've put in a little time on the game, and I'm sure everyone else has already, but this is going to set the tone for the rest of the competition. I want to have fun here, I don't want to go through this thread and see a lot of bad feelings pop up in the future. I apologize if I'm out of line here, as I do not mean to offend anyone, especially Jibbajabba and Gapporin. Thanks to you guys for taking the time and setting this all up. Well, the obvious question is are you sure you don't have a virus? I have already recieved INP files from other players, so either your e-mail provider is bouncing back your e-mail because it doesnt like either zip files or inp files, or you really have a virus and you dont know it.

No way, then as soon as someone later on doesn't like a game they're going to go "let's pull this one!" This is one tiny hiccup with ONE GAME, besides, it's also serving as an education in how to use MAME for those new to the extended features of the emulator - and that's what these forums are all about - having a good time and gaining information about video games.

I actually submitted my score last night (err.. this morning) since I'm not going to be playing anything with MAME again until saturday night. (going to be too busy) There are some cheap shots in the game, I'll give you that - mainly caused by leaving yourself open when going through a "strong attack" animation. I didn't find collision detection any worse than any other beat-em-up though. I will say that playing all those Beats of Rage mods through their development stages non-stop for about a year refined my beat-em-up skill. I say if you can put in around 70k on one credit you're doing very nicely since this game really is designed to be a quarter muncher. :) Still a great choice and a game I overlooked on my MAME setup.

I made numerous attempts, but I was never able to even get to the final boss of stage 3. I got close a few times, but that last stretch (with the tigers AND the larger armored dudes, with no horse) is just too crowded.
I didn't break 100K either but I came damned close.

I've been playing about 4-6 games a day since this was released to us on Tuesday and my first thoughts, while I liked the game, was that it was cheap. Quite hard, bonus attacks are hard to pull off, and only ONE life in reserve. I could'nt get past the boss in Stage 2 and 40k was the best I could get for points.
Tonight, though, my pratice finally paid off. I beat the first boss without taking a hit! I almost beat the second boss without losing my life! I got to the third boss! A total of 86k in points! :D
Since I of course have no way of knowing how my foe this week (MrFoodMonster) is doing, I'm going to keep playing, right up to the Sunday deadline. (It helps that each game only takes about 10-15 minutes to play). But for those having problems, keep at it.
I've found that you want to use the horse as much as you can, and also if you get ganged up on, stay on the top or bottom of the screen. Don't use special moves on the bosses for max points. Try to defeat a 'chain' of the same foe to increase your point bonuses.
To beat the first boss, move in, hit him a few times, and then fall back. Wait for him to laugh or attack and then hit him again. Don't get greedy, he has a good guard. If you knock him to the floor, whail on him hard.
Much the same thing applies to the second boss, just be more carefull about his attacks and hop on that horse!
The third boss.....eh, I was almost dead when I got to him tonight and his first blow did me in. I'll keep trying. :)

86k points is good, but keep practicing. From what I've seen so far, I think we are going to see some pretty astronomical scores by the end of the week. Sure the game is a quarter-muncher, but I dont think it's impossible to beat on one coin, either.
That said, the first INP I get showing the game being beaten on one quarter will get an XBOX game, courtesy of Drexel923, as a prize.

One life in reserve? I have been practicing on my Mame machine, so I haven't started recording yet (I'm quite bad.), and I have had more lives when I started? I will use the correct ROM and record when I get around to it, but I had no idea it was only one life in reserve. Is it really?

This is good news for me! ;)
Seriously though, good luck Cirrus and everyone. I'm a nervous button masher when it comes to fighting games, so I'm not that great at this one, but I do need to practice more. I haven't made it past the second boss yet. But I got to ride the horsie! :-P

You should only have one life in reserve! This is why we ask that you use the ROM that we provide, and set the DIP switches according to Gapporin's instructions!!!

I'm curious if anyone has either gotten past level 3, or has gotten over 100k. Just for... comparison purposes.
I made numerous attempts, but I was never able to even get to the final boss of stage 3. I got close a few times, but that last stretch (with the tigers AND the larger armored dudes, with no horse) is just too crowded.
I didn't break 100K either but I came damned close.
Same here. I got right to the 3rd boss door, but lost on a large armor enemy w/ mace (Which should tell everyone what my final score was).
BTW, Jibbajaba, did you get my e-mail from my Gmail account with my file?

Argh, double-argh and triple-argh!!! I accidently erased my INP of my best game and now I can't even do as well!
My mistake was to save a new replay file by giving it "knight2.inp", thinking that it wouldn't erase the earlier one. I never got a message asking if I wanted to replace the previous savefile. Turns out that it saved again as knight.inp, overwriting my older file. Now I know: I gotta remove the savefile from there before making a new one.
In any case, I doubt I'll do very well in this game -- my best score is still nothing compared to other people's.

Okay, I'm done having my ass handed to me. I wanted to play today because I was irate at work, and I needed to decompress. This game makes me irate as well. I finally got past the horse on the second stage, and I was happy because I thought that was it. But wait, there's more! @_@ I made it to the 2nd boss finally, but he whaled on my ass. No fair using horsie death rays!
Can we PLEASE, PLEASE have a nice golf or bowling game next? I need to relax. :P

I like this game a lot, but I'm really not that great at it...I still can't beat that second boss. And I always lose my first life on that bastard of a first boss. I'm gonna try a few more times today. I also need to get a better gamepad. Mine sucks the big one.

No to bowling, and no to golf. But I promise that my next game selection will not be a beat 'em up. I can't speak for Gapporin, though. That's the beauty of Jared; you never know *what* he's gonna do...
Many of my game selections are going to be predictable.

Try a PlayStation to USB2 converter box, you can get them for next to nothing ($8 or so) and they tell your computer you have a pair of 12 button joypads connected at all times - in other words you can swap controllers without the computer knowing it. It'll let you use the huge (and cheaply available) family of PlayStation controllers. You can use anything from a standard PS1 pad, DualShock2, DDR mat, large joystick, or pretty much any other PlayStation family controller.
Try to get a converter that doesn't need any drivers but instead just uses a standard windows-based built in interface driver.

I can't even FIND my gamepad (an old MS Sidewinder which actually kinda rocks). My score on Galaga was done purely on keyboard which actually works pretty well for that game. For the rest though.. I wanna find my pad! :(

Agreed. I have one, and it's quite dandy, espcially for games that require use of two joysticks at the same time (Robotron, Crazy Climber, etc). The one that I got from Radio Shack had a driver included on a floppy disk; but if you have Windows XP, then the driver is installed automatically whenever you plug the converter in. The floppy is only for anything older than XP.

I just submited my crappy score, it was actually lower than the highest score I achieved, but that was before inp files were mandatory, so it doesn't count, grrr :/ Also, I got that score the very first time I played the game, it's always strange how often you get your best score at the first time playing, and then need lots of reruns until you can beat it ... I couldn't, not my type of game :P
