After looking at the scores, I am now convinced that Frogger is just a low scoring game.
I am DIGGING Quester, big time. It's like Arkanoid's cooler older brother.
Mappy I'm not so good at, but it's a fun game. It reminds me of being at the NAVA meetings at Mike Etler's store. :)

You are making the assumption that if Cmosfm had submitted scores instead of taking two ties, that he would have recieved losses for the scores. Had he won one or both games, he would still be in the playoffs and Cryomancer would be out. The probability would be that Cmosfm would have split with his opponent, and would therefore have one more win than cryomancer.
Chris
I am not making any assumptions, you are You said the probability is that he would have split with his opponent. With that assumption Crymancer gets the short end of the stick for showing up every week and scoring more points.
I know I'm not going to win this argument, so you don't have to worry about responding. Just please put me behind fergojisan in the standings. He has submitted scores every week and has earned that spot.
Jibbajaba
07-26-2005, 04:45 PM
@NE146: You can submit them, and they will be added to your point total, but you have to keep the two losses. The current standings have already been posted. As I said though, everyone still has a good shot at the playoffs, so don't get discouraged!
@Tripppsk: I am not going to alter the standings. That would only be fair if I applied the same rule to everyone. It may be more fair for Fergojisan, but it is unfair to players in other divisions who are in the same situation.

I just want to state ahead of time that I want to be matched up against Soulblazer for the last week of the regular season. You're not taking the regular season crown without a fight buddy :-P
...plus it will be a nice tune-up for the playoffs.

Bring it on, Doctor! I've whipped you before (we were matched up early in the season) and I know I can do so again. ;)
Chris, I was thinking about the playoffs eariler today -- is this how you plan to do them?
For each conference, there are nine people left. Six of those (with the most wins and the score being used as a tiebreaker) will advance to the playoffs. The two people who win their division in the conference get a first round bye.
Round one will consist of #3 playing #5 and #4 playing #6.
Round two will have the winners of the last round playing the two seeded people.
Round three will have the two winners playing one another to see who wins their conference.
Round four will be the final game, for the MAME League and the Gold, with the loser taking Silver.
So how are you going to decide the Bronze winner? Will you have the loser of round three in each conference play a 'consolation game' at the same time as round four and the winner gets the Bronze?
Also, just to clarify -- the playoff rounds will be a single game, three days in length, whoever has the higher score wins.
And just cause I like being a ass..... :P
What happens in the VERY SMALL CHANCE that SOMEHOW, two people playing aganist one another in the playoffs get the SAME score? How will you break the tie?
Good work so far, and thanks for all your hard work and effort! :D

Okay, all this arguing about ranking and scoring practices is great and all... but unless someone reuploads the Quester ROM or e-mails it to me (insanedavid@gmail.com would be fine, change the extension to something other than .exe or .zip so Gmail will allow it, I'll change it back) I'm going to end up having to forefit a game this week, because I can't get it.
...Unless this is a plot to knock me down a peg since I'm four wins ahead in my division. :D
EDIT: Nevermind, I grabbed it from ROMNation. Scores have been submitted as well since I will be away most of this weekend due to the San Jose Grand Prix.

You are correct so far.

Yeah except 3 plays 6 and 4 plays 5. High always plays low.
Round two will have the winners of the last round playing the two seeded people.
Round three will have the two winners playing one another to see who wins their conference.

Also true.
What happens in the VERY SMALL CHANCE that SOMEHOW, two people playing aganist one another in the playoffs get the SAME score? How will you break the tie?
If that were to happen, I would just tell the players that they tied each other and they need to keep playing and come up with better scores. I would just give them one extra day. Works, right?
Thanks

I have one small request concerning the playoffs. Could the link to the ROM file be e-mailed out to the participants as well as posted here? Since the play time is tighter than the normal rounds things like DP going down for awhile at night could make the playing field uneven since we'd be unable to get to the ROM link. (not sure how many people other than me frequent DP only late at night for the most part)

I am in the process of moving right now, so I can't handle the MAME league today. I will post the final week's game tommorow and update the standings on Wednesday.

I don't have internet acces at home right now due to the move, and I don't have time to do this at work. As such, I have asked Gapporin to pick a game for me this week. I asked him to try to pick something more mainstream, but ultimately you are at his mercy.
I'll update the standings tommorow night after my phone gets hooked up.

Chris
"Gapporin," "pick," and "mainstream" do not belong in the same sentence, fortunately. I didn't appreciate that at first, but I do now. Many of the games that Gapporin has picked were new to me, and some of them I enjoyed very much, and will be playing in the future. That's not to say that I didn't enjoy your picks Chris, some of them I did. But you can't pick Asteroids for Gapporin and then expect him to pick something mainstream for you. :D
This being the last week is kind of sad. I think there was a learning curve for everyone, and hopefully it will stick if the tournaments continue (like maybe having all the picks lined up in advance :P ). I joined this tournament on a whim only, I'm not very good at games in general. But that has not detracted from the fun factor for me. Trying out new games that I never would have given a second glance was best of all. So I want to thank Chris and Jared for taking their valuable time and providing us with this opportunity, and thanks to DP for letting it happen. I had a great time, and I hope that it will continue in some form or another.

Well, I've chosen my--er, Jibba's pick in the main thread. Sorry to disappoint my fans, but I've decided to choose something a bit more mainstream this time around. However, I still dig this game, and I bet you will too.

Well, I'm having a BIG problem with the controls in Tempest. :(
My Gravis GamePad Pro does'nt work right with the game for some reason, and if I try using the arrow keys on the keyboard it's IMPOSSIBLE to 'stop' on a path so you can shoot the bugs coming up it.
I can't find any way to be able to duplicate the 'spin' cycle that the arcade version has, either.
Anyone have any help? If I can't find some way to be able to PLAY the game, I won't be able to submit a score for it.
Also, which version are we susposed to be playing? The ZIP file has three revisions and Tempest Tubes. And does everyone start at the easiest difficulty setting?

@ Soulblazer - Use the mouse, it's as close as you're going to get unless you can use an Indy 500 controller somehow. I'm almost positive there is a way.
Make sure you uncheck the joystick option though. I had both of them checked and the controller pretty much went where it felt like. x_x

I think this game uses analogue control, thus a mouse should be used. It's a bit over sensitive though, is that adjustable with Mame32 or do I have to change the Windows mouse sensitivity?
NE146
08-03-2005, 03:25 PM
Yeah I think this one's a little odd for a choice, since the game is meant to be played with a spinner. Granted, you can use the mouse, but it's still kinda odd.
Anyway, I take it we are to start at level 1 (no bonus) and play through with one credit as per normal right? :)
Mr.FoodMonster
08-03-2005, 03:27 PM

I agree, the level of communication within the tournament has begun to go down the crapper over the past few weeks. I probably won't be able to submit a score for Ghosts N' Goblins due to time constraints - which is why I sent Tempest scores last night. :(
You CAN play Tempest and I'll explain how...
1) Load Tempest
2) Hit Tab
3) Go down to "Input (This Game)" and hit Enter
4) Go down to "Dial Analog" and hit Enter then hit Esc - it should change to "None"
5) Go down to "Dial Dec" and hit Enter, then press which ever key you are going to use on the right side. (ex. I would press right on the PlayStation D-pad)
6) Go down to "Dial Inc" and hit Enter, then press which ever key you are going to use on the left side. (ex. I would press left on the PlayStation D-pad)
7) Hit Esc
8) Go down to "Analog Controls" and hit Enter
9) Go down to "Dial Sensitivity" and cycle it back to 35% and press Esc (the amount of sensitivity should be set to your liking, but you'll probably have it between 30% and 40%, play around with it)
10) Go down to "Reset Game" and hit Enter
11) Hit Tab
Hurray, now the controls are like Tempest 2000.
...now all that said, I want everyone to try that out and just for my own piece of mind reply your results in this thread. This is the same thing that I did with Cameltry and no one was complaining about control problems then. (or I would have put this all up during that round) I'm not trying to sound like an a*hole but this is standard proceedure for games in MAME that originally used a spinner and could have been posted in the ROM selection thread (since I'm sure that the games are actually played before they are selected) - or better yet not to select games that originally used non-standard controls. (thankfully Marble Madness never came up since you cannot accurately simulate trackball acceleration without a trackball)
For the record I got 38,570 on Tempest using a PS1 controller.
Yeah, I'm a tiny bit frustrated since this is a big hiccup (at least to me) in what has otherwise been a very enjoyable gaming competition thus far. :|

No one else submitted a score. Dave, you obviously have the right to submit a score for GnG. The Tempest score is no good. I understand that you have "time constraints", but I'm sure that you can find time to sit down and play a game of GnG sometime in the next four days.
I'm sorry that you feel frustrated that the quality of the tournament has gone downhill. I don't agree. Although I have been more preoccupied with moving for the last couple of weeks, I have still made sure to post game picks and update the standings as quickly as my time will allow. Frankly, including this week, we have picked 25 games, and this is the first time that we had to cancel one and pick again. I'd say that we did pretty well.
As a general update, I finally got some kind of internet access at home, although it's just dial-up. I am goingto update the standings right now, and post this week's match-ups as well.

InsaneDavid v QuinTracker
Scooterb23 v DDCecil
Cmosfm v Dr. Morbis
Fergojisan v Crush Crawfish
Robotriot v SoulBlazer
DragonMaster Sam v Mr. FoodMonster
QOF vs. Cryomancer
NE146 vs. Tripppsk
Cirrus and Lord007 have been removed from the tourney for not submitting scores. Wierd since Cirrus was at the top of his division. I'm waiting to hear back from Tripppsk. If he drops out, then his whole conference will make the playoffs.

Holy CRAP, how did that happen? I guess I was seriously in the zone in Quester; I thought that it was a lot easier than Arkanoid. But those regenerating bricks could be a tremendous pain in the ass.

It's a good thing I'm still a decent player on Ghosts and Goblins, my FIRST game last night got me 25k. :P
Re: regarding Tempest. I agree that that sucks, and I'm sorry that you have to resubmit the scores. I don't think it's fair, but I'm not the one who made the call.
Cameltry and the arkanoid-like game I used the keyboard for (would you believe?) but nothing I tried for Tempest would work. I even changed the senstivity ratings like you suggest. The problems were 1) I did'nt know if this was allowed since it might be 'cheating' and 2) I STILL could not get the game to where I felt confertable controling it.
I'm not one to complain lightly about this, especily since this is the last regular week. Only AFTER I tried everything did I post here saying my problems and wondering if anyone else was having them. If I had been told to 'screw it', I would have just sighed and kept trying. It was a very nice thing for the game to be changed and I'm sorry that someone was badly affected by it.
Best of luck to everyone in making the playoffs!

My apologies to the entire thread, I just got REALLY cheesed off about that since I suck ass at Tempest and felt I got a decent score. I will try to get a Ghosts N' Goblins score in, and it is a game I really enjoy, but I may have to end up taking a big null for the game.
The thing that was really picking at me was the hiccup that gets created when games are not playtested before being selected. I don't feel that the quality of the tournament has gone downhill over the past few weeks, just the amount of communication concerning control setup, etc. As SoulBlazer said concerning Tempest, changing things like the sensitivity rating for analog control is something that dramatically makes the gameplay different based on the speed of your machine. I don't expect participants in the competition to know MAME inside out which is why playtesting is critial before submitting a game.
But hell, no one wants to hear me lecutre about unimportant things. :deadhorse: Both games this week are great, and I'll see about getting a GnG score in. :)
InsaneDavid
08-05-2005, 03:56 AM
Well I sat down for 20 minutes and put in a GnG score. Went from a game I'm terrible at (Tempest) to a game I really enjoy (GnG) so I suppose I should be glad the game was changed since I would get slammed if we were all playing Tempest on an arcade machine.
Adam Sessler would approve of the change, GnG is his all time favorite game - and when a game like GnG is someone's all time favorite video game it shows the Sess is not just an underpaid and underappriciated TV personality - but a gamer.

Well, my opinion on the matter is that using cheap tactics like that is tantamount to cheating, but I can't actually call it cheating. But you are certainly not abiding by the spirit of the game. I will be careful about which games we use in the playoffs to be sure that this isn't an option.

No, and I didn't even pass level 2, so if you topped 42k, you have me beat. However, you would need to win both games to take the regular season outright. If we split, our records will be the same (however, the official title would go to you on points, due in VERY LARGE PART to the enormous score you got in 1943, if I remember correctly).
EDIT, actually, I think if we split, I might win outright, but all this math is making my head hurt. I guess I'll just wait until the scores are unvieled and standings updated.
Note to organizers: make sure to update scores and post games in a very timely manner, especially if we are only getting 3 days per game in the playoffs.

Well, I'm not going to reveal any scores until tommorow, but it would be interesting if you two met in the playoffs. Though since you are in separate conferences, it would have to be in the championships. I'm sensing the beginning of a rivalry here; one that I would like to see continue into the emulation league.
I'm so excited that the playoffs are starting.

The only thing I wanted to do in GnG this week was to finally pass level 1, so I sped through to get to the end of the level.
And I must say.
I still haven't passed level 1.
Sub 10k score from me (actually it still is a PB for me)
Phozon though, I had a good time with that one...hope my score is fairly good :)

In GnG, one thing you can do (which is what I did) is make it at least to the 2nd half and alway do that jump that gets you that red cross thingy for 10k :) If you do that w/ 4 lives that's an instant 40k right there. Add your points and the occasional king trophy that's even more pts. I got 63k without even leaving the 1st stage and heck, that's fine by me... x_x
Point milking is pretty much the way to go on this game.. much like it was on Mikey.

Well, the way that I mentioned earlier, is that if you hit a grave with your weapon a whole bunch, a guy comes out of it, and shoots something at you that turns you into a frog. If you kill him, you get 2k points each time, so you could have just dont that over and over, but again, I didn't because I think thats pretty lame. I ended up with 49k

Here are the final standings. I expanded them so that you can see the scores for all 25 games. I know it's hard to read because it's 4 pages long, but you'll manage. If anyone wants to photoshop this into one big jpeg with all of the rows lined up properly, that would be great.

Unfortunately, Cryomancer, DDCecil, and Cmosfm did not make the playoffs. I have decided however that EVERYONE who played in the league all the way until the end will recieve something as a prize, so fret not! Tentatively, the playoffs will begin tommorow. I want to get the MAME league done before CGE starts.

So will .inp's be required for the playoffs (or the championship at least)? http://www.atariage.com/forums/style_emoticons/atariage/icon_evil.gifhttp://www.atariage.com/forums/style_emoticons/atariage/icon_evil.gifhttp://www.atariage.com/forums/style_emoticons/atariage/icon_evil.gif

I'm pretty sure Chris said that .inps would be mandatory for the finals. So starting with the next picks, I guess. Or pick. :D

So who made it the farthest in GnG? I got half way through level 3.

Ah well, I only split -- that's what happened when I spent six hours straight on Sat playing Ghosts and Goblins. ;)
Regarding the score -- I actually thought some of the later stages are easier once you get past the hell that is Stage 2. I also think the arcade version is easier then the NES version.
First I figured out where the hidden items were, mostly by just jumping all over the place so I could find them. Then I praticed on getting past the tough stages. I kept playing until I had gotten all the bonus items AND gotten past Stage 2 WITHOUT losing a life. After that, the game got a bit easier, until I ran up into the hell of Stage 5. Stage 6 is as far as I made it.
Only problem is I spent so much time on that that I did'nt play Phozon all that much, so congrats to Dr. Mobius on taking the title as the best player! If I only had'nt had the bad luck LAST week of running into a good player and losing BOTH my matchups -- my scores for Mappy and the other game had been decent as well.
So, when do the playoff's start? And when will the playoff matchips be announced? I know I get a bye the first round, but still curious. :)

Cool, I didn't expect to get this far myself, 2nd place in my league, not too bad for my initial expectations :D I guess I'll drop out soon though when the eliminiation begins ^^
