I did not want to start a new thread, but I wanted to see what you (Digital Press Members) thought about something. Here is an example of what I find in my local Goodwill (see it kinda fits into this thread).
Saturday, I walk into Goodwill and see a clear green (atomic green?) N64 on the shelf with a black and a clear purple controller. There are no games, cables or power adaptor. I am interested as I do not have a N64. Turn it over to see the price, 19.99! Huh, kinda high, but maybe if I scrounge around I can find the AC adaptor and the AV cables. I grab both controllers and that is when I notice that they both have individual price tags on them for 9.99 each! Jaw drops, N64 goes back on the shelf. 40.00 for a N64 with two controllers and no way to hook it up to your TV or even power it on, no thanks. Keep walking....
.... I now find myself standing in front of the glass case that Goodwill uses to lock up the items that deem "to valuable" to have just sitting on the shelf (I have been to 3 Goodwill and they all seem to have this same setup). Look in side and what do I see? Another N64! Ok, lets try this again. It is the standard black N64, it has two controllers, both 1st party controllers. It also has the power supply and the TV hook ups. As a bonus it also has Mario 64, ok cool, how much? Glass shelf so I look up from the bottom to see the price.....79.99! Wowza McTrousers! Eighty bucks for a N64 and one game?
Now my question, am I over reacting? Are these the prices you are finding to be constant at your local Goodwill or thrift stores? I am not trying to play the "it was a donation, I should be able to buy it for next to nothing" card, but 80.00 for a N64, seems pretty high.
Your thoughts?

Each Goodwill prices what they believe it to be worth. My Goodwill used to price games $2 for retro and $3 for Playstation+, but now everything's $4 base. I've seen prices range from $10 for a barebones PS1 to $60.
Those are pretty high for N64s, but it's not uncommon. You could always try to talk down the manager if they haven't moved in a while.

Your thoughts?
Seems normal to me, I rarely buy anything from thrift stores now. The thing is people are more willing to overpay at a thrift store than to just regular people. I remember the Value Village near me had an N64 in a generic EB Games box for $30 in the display case, it just had an RF switch and some woman was interested in buying it. I mentioned to her that I had an N64 that I wasn't using anymore and she could have it for $20 if she wanted, she told me "no thank you" and bought the system for $30 that was untested and came with an RF switch.
Don't even bother to try to talk them down, N64 systems aren't that hard to find and you can probably find them cheaper off craigslist or at a yard sale. Most of the managers I've talked to wouldn't budge anyway, or they still wouldn't reduce it enough. Even with stuff that they would just throw away like an empty box, they would either sell it to you or throw it out, not give it away. I came across an empty box for the King's Quest Collection, they told me they would just throw it out, but I could buy it for $3.99 if I wanted to.
And I should mention that if it's Value Village, most of the stuff they sell aren't donated. They buy stuff from actual charities and resell it for a profit. If you bought something from an actual charity for $2 and sold it on ebay for $70, you're helping charities the same way Value Village is.

I was at Goodwill two weeks ago and in the case they wanted $12 for one of the gold cart Zelda games for NES, and $20 for the Hobbit game new for original Xbox, it'll be a while before I go back there.

Some interesting finds this week:
Gamestop is clearing out a bunch of loose PS2 discs in many of their stores for between $0.99 and $2.99. Most are old sports games, but I did find a few keepers in the piles at two stores including:
Silent Scope - $1.99
Splashdown Rides Gone Wild - $2.99
Sega Superstars Eye Toy - $1.99
Zone of the Enders - $2.99
Timesplitters & TS Future Perfect - $1.99 and $2.99
At Half Price books I picked up:
Midnight Club 3 Remix (Complete PS2) - $2.00
NFL Blitz (PS1) - $1.00
And my most interesting find came at a local Goodwill:
Infocus DLP Projector - $24.99
This thing was stashed in its carrying case upside-down in the glass case so you couldn't see what it was unless you had an employee let you in the glass case. As soon as I spotted the Infocus logo I was intrigued, as was another guy watching over my shoulder. An employee and I took it across the store to test it, and I noticed this guy tagged along. As soon as I saw it worked, I payed for it immediately and took it out to the car despite the employee's offer to hold it behind the counter. I figured this guy might try to weasel his way into snagging it. The projector worked great for the hour or so that I played with it last night, and the status info claims the bulb has over 500 hours remaining on it. I can use this for work as a presentation projector and I'll also look into figuring out a way to slip this into my theater room on a non-permanent basis for some extra big screen games and movies!
Edit - OOps, almost forgot the Atari 2600 4-switch I picked up at another Goodwill for $2.99. It even came with the original AC adapter (a rarity for anything at my local goodwills).

I was in a Goodwill a little over a week ago that had a box of probably 30-40 loose Atari 2600 games. They were mostly commons and duplicates but there were a few good one that I could put in my collection or resell. I took the box up to the front of the store and asked if they would sell the whole box for a $25. They said that they weren't allowed to do that, and that several people had come in wanting to do that, but they had to tell them the same. So I asked what they were supposed to sell them for, and I was told $4 each. They acted kind of aggrivated because of the fact that the games had sat for so long, but couldn't take any offers on them. I cherry-picked the few I needed that were in the box and paid the asking price.
The whole ordeal makes me wonder where they get their prices or who is marking the decisions as to what price something is marked.
Edit: The post above this says that he found an Atari 2600 system for $2.99 at a Goodwill, yet I was asked to pay $4 each for Atari 2600 games... This just reinforces my point.

sometimes it helps if you are a regular and you are nice and polite, not arogant and obnoxious when you try to negotiate there, they get tons and tons of creepy ebay resellers in any of those stores dayly and they generally don't care to deal with them much (as they can be pretty fucking obnoxious over the difference of a dollar or two) but once they realize you actualy enjoy the games instead of just flipping them, you'llfind they'll be more open to negotiations. and if you are one of those anoying flippers well....TOO BAD! ;-)

Since I'm off school and I have some time at the moment I've been getting back into game searching. I was at a thrift store today which usually doesn't have any games, but lo and behold I walk in and there's a pile of Playstation and XBox games right on one of the counters.
All complete, in pretty good condition:
Cool Boarders 2001 - PS1
SSX 3 - PS2
SSX World Tour - PS2
All the rest were sports games, which I didn't really want to deal with.

When I see loose N64s at Goodwill they tend to run around 10 bucks. Loose controllers are usually in the 3-5 range. Same thing with PS1's, although once in a while I see one for 19.99

This is the stuff I've scored from eBay in the past week, I was just waiting for the Saturn games to arrive to post everything.

Sega Saturn GameShark (French, but works for me) NEW $18 shipped
...so I can play:
Super Advenure Rockman
Rockman 8
Rockman X3
Rockman X4
$90 shipped for all four, each is CIB and X3 has the obi inside, but 8's case is cracked and non-standard size. Still, definitely worth it.
Rockman X CIB - $13 shipped (Retro Duo plays it, haven't removed my SNES's tabs yet)
I've always wanted an import of X4, so I'd been looking for a Saturn copy. Seeing this auction made me really excited, since I've always wanted to see SAR. I'm starting to focus more on collecting Mega Man stuff, so I'm off to a great start, just have to start selling the random games I've found on hunts but never played to finance it. Not sure if I'm going to go for the PSX releases or not, since I have the US editions of those.
Now that I actually have good stuff to play on my Saturn, I'm gonna need a decent Saturn pad. I have a Model 1 pad and an analog pad, but I really want a Model 2 pad.

My first finds for February:
Astro Boy: Omega Factor for $9.99 (Used, Cart-only) - I think I overpaid a little, but it's an awesome game!
Ape Escape 2 for $4.99 (Used, CIB) - A few years ago I passed on this game, and I regretted ever since. Now I finally have it!
Half-Minute Hero for $19.99 (New) - I love how this game pokes fun at the RPG genre.
Preorder for Lunar: Silver Star Harmony Collector's Edition - I'm really looking forward to this game since I never played the PS1 remake. (I have played the Sega CD version.) Although, I wish that the LE came with an artbook instead of the bromides.
Oh, and I also downloaded Wild Arms from the Playstation Network Store.

The JPop was removed in the US releases of X4, and the English voices aren't exactly great. I'm noticing a ton of little details that seem better in the original, like the "Ready!" voice. I'm not sure why something like that was redubbed, since it's in English to begin with! The localization of X4 never struck me as amazing, so playing the original is just something I've always wanted to do.
I have the US PC version of X3, which is a port of the Saturn/PSX versions. Sound effects and overall audio seem better on the Saturn version, and the JPop is intact. There's also sidebars that change from level to level, possibly to compensate for a different pixel aspect ratio (?), while the PC version went fullscreen just fine.
Super Adventure Rockman was never released outside Japan.

No pics, guys. Maybe I'll add some later.
Got System Shock & System Shock II, complete in crushed boxes, $0.50 each.
Got a dirty Marantz 2235 stereo receiver for $5. It's a nice one and I hope it works, sorry Carey, I haven't found any high number (i.e. 7### or higher) ones yet. Will clean it up later and try it out.
Also got some C64 floppies for $0.25 each, lots of CBS games and some other stuff.
Finally, and Kitsune you'll love hearing this, I got 2 copies of Macromedia Studio 8 for $1 a set. I got home and all 4 discs are cracked, not all the way through so I didn't notice it when I bought them. That was like $100+ software on eBay ;_;
....and that's it. Didn't find anything else that was really that interesting. Pics may be called for so I might put 1 or 2 up a little later.

In theory, you can still sell these.
The discs are cracked, but are the keys fine? If they are, then you can sell these with a notice saying "The discs are broken but the keys should work fine". People DO buy these, you know. And since you're selling the entire set and not just the keys, Macromedia / Adobe can't bitch and have your auction taken down. You just have to write down the whole "Discs are broken" thing repeatedly in the auction.

Dunno, I've got 2 plastic dual disc sleeve things, and a series of numbers and letters are written in marker on the side of each sleeve. I'm not sure if those are the keys. The cracks on the discs are maybe less than an inch and they're on the edges of the CD. I might still try to sell both sets, though. It's just a darn shame that such valuable software was damaged like that.
EDIT: I guess I mispoke, by "set" I meant that I got all the CDs for each copy.

Hey Gameguy and PutUrQuarterUp, I can provide some clarification on those Sonic comics you have.
Nice finds. Is that really a #1? I have a #1 but it has a different cover.
This is the first issue of the ongoing Sonic comic series that's still published to this day!
I forgot to add that mine is actually a one-off collector's edition, not the first issue. It has a Sonic & Knuckles pull-out poster inside as well.
This is the first 48 page special issue Archie put out. There were quite a few more over the years, but they discontinued making them because they weren't selling so well. (I think.)
PutUrQuarterUp, I never got a S&K poster with my copy of this issue because it was a reprint. Could you put up a pic of the poster for me? I'm curious to see what it looks like!
Also, if either of you are interested in reading more of the series, I suggest picking up the Sonic Archives series. They are reprints of classic Sonic comics compiled into several volumes. There's 12 volumes out so far. It's a cheap way to collect the series without having to pay insane prices for the individual issues.

All games found this weekend were complete save for Pokemon Pearl and Final Fantasy Anthology.
Hands-down, the best weekend of the year for me. The Playstation bunch was obviously an awesome score, but a few of those are dupes. My absolute favorite finds were Virtua Racing (yay, the big dopey SVP cartridge!), Legendary Axe, and the Zelda CE guide (now I have guides for both the CE and Ocarina of Time for Gamecube); also that CE guide doesn't look nearly that bad in real life -- the flash on my camera really brings out all the little flaws here and there. Lastly, I am a sucker for Super Famicom games, so the Dragon Ball game is a fun little addition to my collection.

Where did these come from? Some re-seller or something? They have a hang tag, so I assume they are from a store somewhere.
Thanks!

Kicked off the month with an R7 (and it's a game I've wanted for some time):
PlayStation:
In The Hunt (longbox, complete with foam block) - $9.95
Wasn't aware that game was an R7, I guess I need to pick it up from a store that has a copy. It'll go nice with my Saturn copy.
I did a little thrifting today, a lot of driving around but not a lot of finds to show for it. Most of these were from a couple Movie Trading Companies, the copy of Pitfall II was from an actual thrift. They had a bunch of other Atari games, but I was on my last couple bucks because I kept forgetting to go to the damn ATM. Besides, I already had the other games, even though they weren't all that common.

The weird "Cars of Fury" box was something I picked up in a thrift for $3.99. It's a Mac-compatible game with an included USB analog controller shaped like a race car to play the game with. It's pretty rare for me to come across any Macintosh games in the wild, so I bought it to see if it sucks or not.

Both of you guys need to be slapped upside the head with a wet trout! Even a lowly Wacoan like me knew that In the Hunt on PSX is an R7!

Alright, man. I don't really need it, I'd just like to pick it up for when it's harder to find years from now when I start getting interested in collecting for the Playstation. At the moment, I'm not a PS1 kind of guy.

Thanks, I didn't really know too much about the comics. I only found the first issue at a thrift store so I picked it up(I also got a couple of Batman: The Animated Series comic books at the same time). I should note that the comic series came out before the SatAm TV series did, there's an advertisement to look out the TV show "coming this fall", or something like that.
I'll look into the archives, I still think it would be pretty expensive to get all the archives as they come out as there's a lot of issues in the series. I really don't know how many archives would need to be made to get caught up to date with the recent issues.

Finally, and Kitsune you'll love hearing this, I got 2 copies of Macromedia Studio 8 for $1 a set. I got home and all 4 discs are cracked, not all the way through so I didn't notice it when I bought them. That was like $100+ software on eBay ;_;
I know I've passed on those before, all I know are worth money are MS office and OS's. Need to figure out the other programs that are worth money. Are old versions of photoshop worth anything?
Anyone have sort of a list?

Also, very tempted to buy this:

I have no idea where to put it though. I could barely find a place to put the 36" TV I got for free a few days ago. Wouldn't fit on the TV stand I put it on my dresser and moved all the games and crap on my dresser on a pile on the bed and am sleeping on half the bed.

Well, if just want to read the stories (and not have to fork over a ton of cash to do so), you should check out your local library and see if it has any of the Archives volumes available. If it doesn't, you might be able to request that they order/add it to their catalogue.
Oh, and before I forget, Archie has also started reprinting the Sonic 48 page specials in a separate compilation series called Sonic Selects.

On the cheap is right. R7 or not, the game simply isn't valuable for whatever reason. I landed a jewel case copy for a couple dollars within the last year and could've gotten a longbox for about 8 dollars off here. Nice you're willing to share though, good on ya.

Yeah, the main reason I started picking them up is because they're rated R7 here. I didn't realize they're worth pretty much what I paid for them, $5-10 each.
Kitsune: I'd prefer to trade. I'm looking for a couple other PS1 games.

The rarity guide only goes so far. In the end, it's good that it's cheap as it enables people like me who actually play and enjoy the game to not break the bank. I wonder what the actual print run was on it though.

The flea market was half-empty because a lot of vendors couldn't get their selling permits on time for some reason. Ugh. I managed to pick up the following items:
CDs ($1 each):
Hiroshima - Third Generation
Cause & Effect - Another Minute
Meat Beat Manifesto - Actual Sounds + Voices
I've been looking for a complete copy of Another Minute for... wow, ten years! A friend of mine gave me a disc only copy back around 1998-2000, when we went to this same flea market to look for stuff. He bought a brand new copy and gave me his old one. I finally have a complete copy and I'm happy.
Misc stuff:
proMax Inside Apple's Final Cut Studio training suite (brand new) - $4
Games:
Silent Hill (PS1, GH, complete), Resident Evil 2 (PS1, GH, complete), Donkey Kong Classics (NES, with sleeve and manual), Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse (NES, with sleeve) - $15 from one guy. :D Both DK and CVIII are in mint shape. I'm not sure if I'll sell Silent Hill and RE2 yet (I already beat Silent Hill and I have RE2 on Dreamcast.)

Yeah, we had to write off the nearest PnT because anything classic was at least $5, if not at least $10. However, the next closest one has awesome prices. Definitely hit or miss.

Damn, really, $45? If I had known that shop was selling them so cheap, I'd have bought all of them myself! Makes me wish I had bought that Asian Dreamcast I found at Trader's Village years ago.

After I left, I got to wondering that myself. I almost went back to see if I could get the 2 you wanted as I'm afraid they may price them quite a bit higher when you went to get them. I don't think the guy did the math when he accepted my offer ($2.50 a game is really cheap), but he also didn't flinch when I told him $45 was the most I'd go. Maybe buying the extra stuff at the same time helped, but no telling.
If you need a way to boot imports, let me know. I have a nice region switcher I can set you up with.

I might, since I only have that Game Genie type of thing for the DC, and if I recall it only allowed you to play a few Japanese titles, like my Macross game (which sucked).

You might not have ever ended up in this shop, it's a little hell hole in the middle of a crumbling strip mall. I pass by it all the time but it never occurred to me to stop in the place until the middle of last year. Stopped by a few months later to pick up Shadow of the Beast II for the Sega CD only to see that they'd marked it up from $9.99 to $18.99. That's why I was so shocked to see the prices of those import Dreamcast games.

About a year ago we got our first mom & pop type game store EVER in my area. I've been to the store a grand total of 3 times over the last year and haven't bought a single thing and much of it has to do with prices on older stuff being much like your situation, $5 and up so I guess something like Bases Loaded would be $5.
No prices on anything you have to ask and the guy who then looks it up on his computer and gives you a price. He tells me that he charges what "his program" says it's worth plus shipping (or what shipping would cost you if you were buying online so I'm guessing + $4) so it always ends up being more then I could find it for online shipped. Last time I was in I checked the price on a cart only copy of Sagaia (Jap) for the GameBoy and he was asking $10 out the door, I would have bought it if it was $5.
In past trips I saw Earthbound - $85 (serious label damage) and a 2600 with a dozen games or close to for $150! I also saw Chuck Rock II cart only for the Genesis last visit and have been wanting to grab the Genesis or SNES Chuck Rock games if I saw them cheap but I would have been lucky if he was asking $5, probably would have been $7-8 and I would only want to pay $3 tops for it cart only.

Get ready for this AMAZING FIND!!!! from Bookman's:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y20/hellvin/2010-02-03181610.jpg
Lol...ok, a bunch of boring genesis sports games but I have none of them.
Bulls vs. Blazers - .25
Bill Walsh College Football - 2
Bill Walsh College Football '95 - 2
Sports Talk Baseball - 2
Rugby World Cup '95 - 3
Fifa Soccer '96 - 3
That leaves 77 left to go.
Then I picked up this at Play N Trade:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y20/hellvin/2010-02-03181259.jpg
Nothing else too exciting, but I don't have these either. They got in a TON of atari carts.
Donkey Kong
Jr. Pac-Man
M.A.D.
Mouse Trap
Raquetball
Space Chase
2 bucks each. They had a blue label Demon Attack there that I passed on and now I see that label variation is somewhat uncommon so I gotta go back and pick that up. They also had about 10 Supercharger cassettes there but wouldn't sell them until they figured out a price =*(. They did put me on a "wish list" for them and said they'd call back when they know, which I hope is soon because two of them were Rabbit Transit and Survival Island! Let's hope they don't go by DP pricing, lol.
