1943 just might be the first game so far that I'm having a ton of fun trying to get the high score. Alot of the others have been fun sure, but this game I don't mind playing over and over again for the highest score.

Metro-Cross is... different, as seems to be Gapporin's style :)

I agree with you, except for Galaga and Q*Bert though. I enjoyed playing those over and over.

Metro-Cross is different, but for me, it is great fun. It's not as frustrating as some of the other games have been. I think Jibbajabba and Gapporin were trying to make sure that no one bailed on them this week, hence the great picks. Kudos to the bosses, if I may say kudos. :P

By the way, has anyone made it through Level 3 of M-C solely by jumping on the ramps? I think my best volley was 5 in a row so far.

Jibbajaba

People bailing on me wasn't really part of my decision making process, but this is supposed to be fun, and I got the clear impression that a lot of you were not having much fun with the games we were picking (even though I was picking my favorite games!).

Fergo, if you can't learn to spell my name correctly, you'll be demoted from Dr. Pushy to Mr. Pushy. :P

I know the matchups aren't posted yet. I promise I will post them today. Memorial Day really screwed up my schedule, and I've been sort of involved in a situation elsewhere on DP that has been taking most of my DP attention. Hopefully you guys are having so much fun with this week's games that you hadn't even noticed.

Wow, I had a GREAT game last night.

It helps that I know the game quite well back in the NES. But trial and error, and pratice and memorization, can really help as well. For example, once you know where the powerups are and what they are, you can pick and choose them better.

I normaly stay with the Three Way as I love the spread of bullets that it gives me.

Also, your energy tank gets bigger with each stage you go through, so the later stages get a little EASIER then the first few ones. Plus the ones with planes at the end are EASY. No wonder they were'nt in the NES port. ;)

At the end you want to try to hit the ships as much as you can and save enough energy to use your special weapons a few times so you can 'pin' the Japanese capital ship and nail it with enough damage.

I still really love this game, much better then 1942 was.

SoulBlazer
06-04-2005, 05:05 PM
The second 'stage' with planes at end -- I think it's either Stage 5 or 6 -- is'nt just one BIG plane like in Stage 3. It's a mess of small ones, I'd say about 12 or so, that come in from the bottom at varying angles and you need to shoot down as many as you can.

I made it to about Stage 7. It gets nasty around them with these small planes that apear on all sides of the screen and then rush in at you at once. @_@

I think I'm doing alright this week. I'm not so great at 1943, but I really love it! Same thing with Metro-cross. Is it just me, or does that game have the catchiest music ever? I think I'll try a bit more today before sending the scores in...

Crush Crawfish
06-05-2005, 04:42 PM
Well, I couldn't do any better in 1943, but I completely decimated my old Metro-cross score-- by over 22,000 points! @_@ I love that game. This should be an interesting week in scores....

Yeah, I agree. I think it's because both games are really fun this week. Let's keep that up! :)

I kept getting progressively better in Metrocross (I was very happy when I skated across the finish line) as the week went by. I never made it past level 5 though. As for 1943, it started out great, but I couldn't get a better score than I got in my 3rd try. I even made it farther a few times too, but no dice. I may give them both a few more shots before bed tonight though. Great games this week! :rocker:

Mr.FoodMonster

I'm going to try again later tonight, but my power might go out (oh noes a tornado warning!!11) so maybe I can, and maybe not. So, if my scores arent in tonight, they will be in early morning.

Am I the only one that seems to be leaps and bounds better at the non-prize games every week? :D

I rock at metro-cross... yet suck hard at 1943. then again I suck at shooters period.

Hey wait a minute... I just noticed on the scores I got a ZERO in that baseball game! I noticed others have scores of a couple thousand as well! I thought the scores were supposed to be like baseball scores? Was there a regular score in the game? (my best was losing 6-0).. but I maybe I had a score and not ZERO. O_O I should check out if I got the .inp still...

The score for the compeition comes up at the very end of the game - it'll spit out a standard video game score.

So, wait a second -- with the baseball game, I've been taking pics of the screen that DOES show my final score, afetr the bonsus has been factored into it. This is right after a complete 9 inning game has been finished. Is that wrong? What score are we susposed to submit?

No, you're right. I guess I wasn't clear enough. Your final score, point-wise (the one at the top of screen) is what you will submit.

NE146
06-06-2005, 03:23 AM
ok.. my score was 31,501. I resubmitted it. I didn't even realize there was an actual videogame score in that game.. probably because I was so put off by it (sorry but that game was a chore to play :P) and also by the fact that I was travelling between Philadelphia and Seattle that entire week. Anyway.. bottom line is I dumbly submitted my baseball score LOL

Yeah, I'm happy with my 1943 score, but I HATED Motor-Cross. Probaly the worst game we've played so far.

With 1943, it just takes a lot of pratice and memorization. Knowing what planes give what powerups, when planes come in, how to deal with them, etc. Really help. Plus knowing where the hidden powerups are. I would switch between my thumb and index finger for shooting, depending on how much action was going on at any time.

I just hope no one accues me of cheating when the scores are posted. LOL 8-)

You know I really wish you guys would stop ragging on Gapporin's picks so much. He is trying to expose people to games that they would not otherwise play.

And I thought MetroCross was cool.

I think Soul Blazer needs to change his we've to I've. He is entitled to his opinion, but not entitled to put words in the rest of our mouths. I hope that since he hated Metrocross so much, I stomped his score. :D

I'm not saying that you guy shouldn't be entitled to your opinion. But there are different ways of saying things. The week aftr he got reamed for picking that baseball game, he gets told that MetroCross is "the worst game we've played so far." Can you not imagine how this might cause his morale to start sinking? All I'm asking is that we use a little bit of tact if we are going to be critical. mmmmkay?

Heh, I don't mind. I realize that everyone's opinion is different from mine in many ways. I like the game, and that's all that matters. :P

In any case, I've added my pick to the main thread for this week. I can already hear some of you say, "Oh man, not another puzzle game!" But, hey, if you've ever worked as a cashier, this should be second nature to you. :)

Well, I played Mouja once, but I have no idea what I'm doing. I have to figure out the making change angle. I'm not that great at puzzle games, but I like 'em.

Got Mouja if you want it:
http://home.comcast.net/~wombat94/mouja.zip

Gapporin
06-06-2005, 06:34 PM
...and once again fergojisan pulls through. Thanks again! :)

Mouja's mechanics are set up like Columns', in the fact that you must surround the same object with itself to make it go away. Only unlike Columns (where you must get three in a row), in Mouja you must make change.

Gapporin's Guide To Mouja Money:

5 1-cent pieces = 1 5-cent piece
2 5-cent pieces = 1 10-cent piece
5 10-cent pieces = 1 50-cent piece
2 50-cent pieces = 1 100-cent piece
5 100-cent pieces = 1 500-cent piece
2 500-cent pieces = 1 1,000-cent yen bill

So, for example, putting 5 1-cent pieces together, makes them turn into 1 5-cent piece. And so on, and so forth. Once you hit the yen bill, the coins are removed from the playing field.

It's really quite interesting, and you should be able to get the hang of it after awhile. Another game like this is Money Idol Exchanger on the Neo-Geo (also in MAME).

Oh, and Mouja looks cool too...anything with cats is ok with me. :) Quick question though...when you first start the game, I had to (twice) pick an option on the left or the right. Which one are you supposed to choose? Does it matter?

Good. I was getting worried!

In other news, I posted my pick as well. My pick for this week is Tapper (as QOF seems to have already noticed). You're a bartender with tons of thirsty customers. Fill their mugs and take back the empties, but if a customer reaches the end of the bar or an empty mug hits the floor, YOU LOSE!!!

I'm having a problem playing Tapper. I think the resolution or Hz for the game is incompatible with my monitor as the screen gets all scwiggily. And yes my monitor is pretty old too...the highest resolution I can choose is 800x600 in windows. Or could it be that I have a really crappy graphics card (GeForce 4 MX)?

Either way, I don't mind taking a loss for that game...

TAPPER!!!!! (Budweiser version)

Maybe next weekend you could watch Animal House 5 or 6 times in a row. :D

I still can't get the gist of Mouja (I haven't had a positive score yet), but I'm having fun trying.

I have always sucked at Tapper. But I was playing yesterday, and I was running back from getting my tip, and I hit the pour button by mistake, and I MAGICALLY STARTED POURING. I had NO idea that I didn't have to run back. I have never made it to the 4th screen before! Yay for me! :rocker:

which score counts?? (was a difference of 40k)

Yep, while playing, the enemy puts cat heads on your side of the screen. When you remove them, they take some of your score before they go. Sucks, huh?

The score you have at the end of the game is the score that counts.

This being the case, just so that there are no foul-ups, Im going to ask that the screenshots for this game be of the list of highscores at the end of the game. Just take the shot when your score is scrolling by.

I just hope no one accuses me of cheating when the scores are posted. LOL 8-)

Well.. that would be easy to dispel since you most likely have your .INP file right? ;) I mean.. for record purposes and potential disputes (and since they're so easy to make) I assume EVERYONE has .inp files to back up their scores don't they? :D

Actually personally I would love to see some of the .inps for high scores in games I found frustrating.. not for any suspicion, but because I really do like to see how someone good at the game plays it! :)

Although no game yet has really has struck me so far to think about it.. if anyone gets a really good score at Tapper for example. I would love to check it out :D So, do your .INP's! It's fun. It's satisfying. :P

I'm all for it. It seems like it's not very hard to do. I don't think we should necessarily need to send them in, but I think having them is a good idea. I know you have done this, and I think I will, too. I am sure they will be necessary for the tournament (at least at the end), but I'll log them anyway.

.inp's are a pain to make since you have to restart MAME and make a new one at the beginning of each high score run to avoid getting one HUGE multi play .inp file. When getting in the zone and playing for a high score submission I like to play many games in quick succession: game over -> next game -> game over -> next game with no delay in between. Making a .inp means I have to move away from my control setup, either do a keystroke command or mouse movement, and then reload MAME, have the game load, and get dailed back into the game.

If any of my scores come under debate I will gladly play another time through, recording a .inp, and submit it for review. Higher score, lower score? Probably, but at least you'd be able to see how the player in question plays the game. Although at this point in the competition I don't see cheaters being an issue. I don't think we need the DP MAME Yakuza.

Well true.. it takes getting out of the game and reloading it again. At least with Mame32 I just hit esc, choose the record inp option, game starts up, a quick f10 speeds up the startup process (if any) and we're off and flying. :) I remember starting up mikey multiple times recording every single attempt which was probably a 3-4 second process each time. Granted I see you don't like the hassle, which is fine, but personally it's fast for me. :P

HOWEVER.. I did notice your mindset was mainly focused on the suspicion and "cheating" aspect. But again, half my reasoning for people making .INP's is.. it's fun to watch that high score being done! Look at MARP (http://marp.retrogames.com/). If someone has a high score.. and people want to watch it and admire it, that's the way to do it. .INP's are great. And I don't mind making them for each and every gameplay attempt. :)

It's all up to you though however of course. ;)

I know it's not a console, but here's another interesting "Mikie" port. The c64:

What system is that cart for, anyway? Nothing I've heard of.

Also, I'd say that Mikie is the biggest success so far in the "get people to try games they would never try before" initiative. I had tried Mikie before and totally dismissed it. Once I tried it, I thought it was pretty darn playable.

It's for the SC-3000, Sega's predecessor to the Master System in Japan.

I still have yet to get a positive score on Mouja. I'm going to take a big hit this week, but I think I will maintain 1st Place as League LOW-Score Leader. Poop. :P

Yeah, I don't understand Mouja myself -- on my VERY FIRST game I beat the first cat and got to the second, and took a snapshot of my score. I may very well be sending that one in, cause every game SINCE I've NEVER gotten past the first cat again.

I don't know how I did it either.

It seems I can win the first round, but then in the second and third rounds the AI goes SUPER fast, and it does'nt take long at all before cats start raining down on your side, ruining you.

Tapper, on the other hand, I'm pretty good at. I've always liked this game.

I remember starting up mikey multiple times recording every single attempt which was probably a 3-4 second process each time. Granted I see you don't like the hassle, which is fine, but personally it's fast for me. :P

Not when you're playing the games on a MAME cabinet. ;) (which I have went back and forth from my PC and a friends MAME cab for most of the games)

...I need to finish my MAME cocktail. :(

Well, I finally got a chance to play this week's games yesterday. I really like Mouja, but I can't beat the second level. It starts raining ridiculous amounts of cats and I just get completely destroyed. :/ Tapper on the other hand....ehh, I'm not too fond of it. I'll have to keep trying though. I keep accidentally breaking glasses and crap. LOL

Hint for Tapper for those that haven't figured it out yet: You do NOT have to run all the way back to the end of the bar after you grab a tip. Just push up or down to immediately move to the next bar or tap the button to immediately serve up a beer in the same row.

What I can't stand about the game is sometimes you're just a tad too slow in sending out the beer and the game seems to get stuck in a continuous loop with a customer popping out the second you think you've served up the last one. (Just like real life. :P )

OK the scores are finally up. I made a mistake on them, though, and I'm not going to fix it until the enxt update because it is trivial. In the Miyamoto division, Cmosfm should be in third place and Robotriot should be in second, so their positions need to be switched.

I'll get to the matchups later. Sorry I'm lagging so bad this week.

Well, congratulations Flack on earning a split against me and bringing down the last unbeaten player. Your 1943 score edged my out by about 20k.

About Mouja, I scored like 50k but I wasn't against a cpu opponent. I think that would have been the better option to play this game with for this week, but oh well... negative score, here I come!

I just want to know what the WORST scores you guys have gotten for mouja are. The worst I got was -79k on the second guy. My best isnt very good, but in relation to whate everyone is saying, it might be good after all.

I think my worst was -6000 and change. I FINALLY got into the Mouja groove tonight and got a positive score, but now I have to go to bed, so it's low scores all around for fergojisan this week. Again. LOL

I was so used to getting negative scores (I never saw my score scroll by or anything like that), and I panicked when the final screen flew by before I could hit F12. I pressed continue, hoping that my score would be there, and it was. Luckily I got a higher score, so I wouldn't have to give my sob story to Jibbajaba and Gapporin. x_x

I decided not to post matchups at all this week. I'm trying something new as far as randomization goes. If you challenged someone though, then that matchups still stands.

What I want to know is what is that Win and Loss column supposed to signify?.. maybe I'm a little behind :P Is it important?

And if that's a win/loss column re: "matchups" (which I never even pay attention to btw) does my win loss total take into account my revised Jap Baseball score? Just wondering :)

Mr.FoodMonster
06-12-2005, 09:42 PM
I'm pretty sure the whole Win/Loss thing is the reason we are doing this in the first place. Like how I beat at both games last week :D .

Or, its the same as the total score in level of importance.

SoulBlazer

Yeah, I'm not sure waht counts either -- total points or win/losses.

I would say it's more fair to have total points because that rewards the winners for having a more well rounded gaming history -- i.e., you are a very good player at all games as a AVERAGE, across the board. That way if you suck hard on a game or two, it does'nt kill you.

It looks like I'll be sending in my first score for Mouja -- I reached the second cat and never did it again. ;) I'm still working on Tapper to get a better score, though.
