My rarest items are multiple prototypes of the unreleased PCE game Mysterious Song. Only one of each exists, all at various points of the game's development.

Of course, since I actually coded the game, it's understandable that I would own said prototypes. :D

I have a few games that were development builds at various stages.

Other than that, nothing truly "rare". Quite a few "expensive" games (3 digits and up) aren't particulary rare either. They mostly seem to be around quite a bit, you just have to be willing to pay the price of admission.

Speaking of rarities...

I had the opportunity to meet the the Assistant Producer of "Akumajo Dracula X: Gekka no Yasokyoku" aka "Castlevania: Symphony of the Night" Koji Igarashi @ E For All 2007 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Such an awesome guy - he signed my import copy of "Akumajo Dracula X: Gekka no Yasokyoku" on the PS1.

Greetings Program !!!

Not neccessarily a video game but game related :)

On June 17, 2007, I had the opportunity to catch TRON in its 70mm glory in Santa Monica, CA - complete with a Q&A session with some of the cast and crew members! So I brought my 20th Anniversary TRON DVD along and had the crew sign it.
Unfortunately not all the cast & crew members showed up for the Q&A - just keyfigures signed the DVD:

-Bruce Boxleitner - TRON

-Dan Shor - RAM

-Steven Lisberger - Director

-Harrison Ellenshaw & Richard Taylor - Visual Effects Supervisors

-Bill Kroyer - Production Storyboards

-Syd Mead - Electronic world conceptual artist

Friends and I were waiting in the lobby of the Biltmore Hotel before the unveiling of the Nintendo 64 in Downtown L.A. - when we noticed an entourage of Japanese businessmen. One of them was the legendary Shigeru Miyamoto!! They were heading towards the restroom. The night before I couldn't sleep at all because of the excitement. We were going to be THE FIRST to witness the Nintendo 64 and a new Mario game ! I packed my knapsack with few things including some games incase I ran into some game celebs :)
As Mr. Miyamoto and his collegues made it out of the restroom - we approached him and asked if he could sign my Yoshi's Island (Super NES) cart. Without question, Mr. Miyamoto was obliged to sign the back of my cart. Not only did he sign it and dated it. But he also drew a Mario headshot !

About 7 years later, I ran into Mr. Miyamoto for the second time shortly after he took the stage delivering a keynote address at the 2002 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3).
This time I was armed with a copy of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Collectors Edition :)

7 years ago I was at the right place at the right time to scoop up a movie screening flyer. The movie Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within was being tested 5 months prior to its official release date of July 11, 2001. The screening was held at the Pacific Theatres Winnetka 21 in Chatsworth, California. I had been to many test screenings in Los Angeles before to know that Directors, Actors, or Producers end up sitting in on the screenings. This was Final Fantasy so I brought along a 2000 Squaresoft brochure and black ink pen :) I would've brought one of my FF games but I didn't want to take the chance and miss the screening because the organization holding the screening are very anal to electronic devices n' such. I wasn't gonna miss this for the world !

After the screening - as I walked out into the theatre lobby there I saw the creator / Director Hironobu Sakaguchi. He was hanging out talking to what looked like movie studio execs. I waited until he seemed finished chatting. Then I approached him and delivered nothing but praises for the film and especially the RPG games. Mr. Sakaguchi didn't speak a word of english but someone stepped up to help translate. That person turned out to be Jun Aida the Producer of FF: The Spirits Within. I also had Mr. Aida to sign the brochure - lol

In pic is a copy of the DVD which later released. The Movie screening flyer I obtained prior to the screening. The special "Priority" ticket while I waited in line. And the 2000 SquareSoft brochure with the two signatures :)
Notice after Mr.Sakaguchi signs his name - he drew a tiny chocobo head - lol

My rarest piece is certainly my original Sonic Crackers prototype cartridge. I acquired this cart from a friend of mine who was very active in the Atari proto scene in the mid 90's. He got the cart as a "freebie" when he purchased a large lot of Atari protos around 1996/97. I have been offered some serious cash for this, but I will never sell it.

Rarest item eh?

This is an item I got at a yard sale for about $8. On the box it says 75,000 games in 1. There wasn't even that many released for the NES. Then I find out This...

When Nintendo discovered this product, they began taking strong legal action against importers and sellers of the consoles, and have obtained a temporary injunction against the import and sale of video game systems containing counterfeit versions of Nintendo games.

As of Spring 2005, NrTrade quit selling these products, however they still retain stock by other companies. These are still in production in China by Eittek but not massively distributed. On December 16, 2005, the FBI executed search warrants at two kiosks at the Mall of America and also searched storage facilities rented by Yonathan Cohen, 27, an owner of Perfect Deal LLC of Miami, Florida.[1] The consoles, purchased wholesale at $7 to $9 each, sold for $30 to $70 each.[2] After confiscating 1,800 units of Power Player, each containing 76 copyrighted video-game titles belonging primarily to Nintendo or its licensees, Cohen was charged in Minneapolis, Minnesota in January 2005 with federal criminal infringement of copyright for selling Power Player video games at kiosks at the Mall of America and other malls across the nation.[1] In April 2005, Cohen pleaded guilty to selling pirated video games.[2]

Nine days after Cohen's guilty plea, 40 FBI agents arrested four Chinese nationals working in an international piracy ring and seized 60,000 pirated Nintendo Power Player consoles in searches in Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and Maple Shade, New Jersey.[3][4]

In November 2005, Cohen was sentenced to five years in federal prison and required to run ads in mall magazines to tell the public how he illegally sold knockoff video games at Mall of America kiosks.[5]

Several shopping malls quit selling these products but despite that the product is still sold by other dealers

so another words. I can't really sell it because its a illegal. These can sometimes go for $100 ( I think)

The only thing I am missing is the light gun. And not to long ago, I was in my room on my computer. Then I started smelling something, And to come to find out, that the Power Adapter for this thing MELTED. Yes thats right, Melted. Stupid made in china plastic.

Look close enough at the first image. It says 75,000! WOW!

Sonic 10th Anniversary pack that came with a pre-order for Sonic Adventure 2. It is blue with gold foil embossing and comes with a gold Sonic coin, history of Sonic mini-book and a cd with popular soundtrack tuneage from various games in the series.

I also have a personally autographed copy of Tommy Tallarico's "Games Greatest Hits 2" cd, which I ordered direct from his studio years ago.

Hehe, same here. If I had to choose some, I'd say my 3DO M2 stuff, my lot of N-Gage promo/beta/press stuff, and a beta of Youngblood for PlayStation, which I'm especially proud of because of the way it was made available to me (though that story doesn't belong here ;)). After looking at a bunch of these posts, I don't think have a single rare item. I don't own a single prototype. Everything I have was officially manufactured and put either in an online store or B&M.

I have Decathalon & Footie for 3DO, Lost & Found 2 + 3 for SS and Pokemon Box US brand new and still sealed for the GameCube. I also have Sonic Adventure LE for US Dreamcast. That's about as rare as it gets for me.

I have plenty of sealed and MINT (I don't own a single game that doesn't look like new) for an array of systems, but I don't think anything is particularly rare or hard to find.

My rarest items are:

Bumper Bash (http://www.atariage.com/software_page.html?SoftwareLabelID=59), for the Atari 2600

Then there is a complete Gizmondo, with loads of press stuff, as well as the demo card and its launch titles, like Sticky Balls, SSX3, Fathammer Classics, POD: Point of Destruction, Interstellar Flames 2, Trailblazer, Pocket Ping Pong, FIFA 2005, and Classic Compendium. It's actually a very nice collection, thanks to the combined efforts of a load of press stuff I picked up at E3 05 and the GREATEST XMAS PRESENT I EVER RECEIVED, from a journalist pal who had been given a complete Gizmondo in-box with tons of games for review. You can find a Gizmondo for cheap on eBay, but as we get farther from 2006 it's tough to find it with all the fixin's.

Um, wow, that thing looks clunky.

How did you stumble upon it and how much did it cost?

My rarest item is a Prototype controller for the prototype SNES CD-ROM drive that was the predecessor for the Playstation. I don't know how many exist out there, but I imagine that it is probably rarer than NWC.

Actually, what you have there is the controller from an early Playstation post-Nintendo version development system. Here's a link for the box that thing actually hooked up to. Neat, but not a prototype controller from the SNES CD-Rom unfortunately.

I don't know where his controller came from but the 2 pictures from the playstationmuseum website are from my auction. My auction had a controller which came directly from a Sony employee and I was told the controller I was given came from the SNESCD dev kit.

Could be the SNESCD and the PS1 dev kits ued the same controllers I dunno.

To save time. A thread was ongoing at the time.

I got mine from a Sony contractor who stated that this was from the SNES CD Development kit, before the project was scrapped. It is possible that when Sony turned from SNES CD development to Playstation development that they kept some of the same hardware instead of reinventing everything from scratch.
