Wow, I kept waiting for a joke and there was none. It's amazing they're still finding SMB tricks all these years later.

Yeah, I was amazed. I thought I'd read about or found all of the known secrets in that game. But I guess when you have a game that millions upon millions of people have been playing for 25 years, you have an incidental team of a "million monkeys on a million typewriters" kind of testing situation. I'll have to go look at GameFAQs or wherever and see what other kinds of tricks I'm unaware of.

Did you ever see the Power Play videos from Nintendo celebrating 25 years of Mario? Im amazed at what they can still do (small fire mario!) Sadly none for Mario 64 and up..

New AVGN up! It's STAR WARS! I thought it was pretty awesome because I was wearing my New Hope pajama pants and then the new episode turned out to be Star Wars :D

I thought this episode was very good. There were probably more games he could have covered, but I was fine with it. They were probably the most common ones, like the 2600, NES/Famicom, and SNES games.

Now I wanna go play the first level in Shadows of the Empire and Super Star Wars now!

Nah, it was because he is usually the one that posts the new AVGN videos, so when I saw the new link, I though you were him. :p

I saw the video and did notice him being chubby or anything. Perhaps it was the Atari sweater he had on. Sideways, it does seem he is getting fatter, so perhaps the sweater was put on to hide this fact. Dunno really.

Concerning the video itself, he complains that the JVC version of Star Wars is hard...it really isn't THAT hard. It just takes practice but it is beatable. I personally have never finished Empire Strikes Back (NES).

Also, what was the deal with the animal crapping in the end? It made no sense. Was this supposed to be a Star Wars referral that was lost to me?

This is the first one of his vids I've watched in a while, mostly because I hate all of the Super Star Wars games. That's right, there are way too many cheap shots in those games, I hate playing them for the same reason I hate playing games like Chakan.

I laughed about the beer droid pelting him with beers, and that was about it. I agree with the problem with this guy's use of profanity. It just isn't funny, except maybe to repressed teenagers.

I have no idea. I suppose that was to make up for the lack of profanity throughout the rest of the video.

It's not nearly as grating as having some reviewers say "fustrating" instead of "frustrating."

I dunno..i watch each and every video and some are hit and miss, i like the more informative ones like Atari 5200 or Adv of Link,as well as reviews of say StreetFighter 2010..i didnt care for the recent xmas episode, not for me. Neither was this one. I think for now he's lost some focus on his work and all the fan worship has gone to his head a bit (his cinemassacre site has lots of that..) Plus hes under pressure to please everybody and cuss more or do videos this way or that, so whatever style he does it in i enjoy as long as he does it good.

he shouldnt be out to please anyone and just do what he thinks is the best route for jokes in the script or whatever the episode calls for. If he doesnt have the time hardly or isnt feeling some of these, i'd say dont do them, but then again some have to get out the door and make way for other episodes..maybe this one has been on the chopping block for a while, who knows.Either way, i see him doing some sort of retrospective+either a bunch of short reviews on a particular topic or a real requested game for his 100th. I always look forward to what he does and i know we all have ups and downs quality wise..
ps what IS that buffalo part about anyway? sounded stuck for a conclusion to me.

I also hate the Super Star Wars games, some of the worst Star Wars games I've ever played. They're just way too difficult and the gameplay isn't fun enough to warrant me to keep playing. I was hoping he would bash them, but unfortunately he raved about them :S.

Those Atari games looked fairly bad though, especially the Return of the Jedi one.

Yeah, you were best served by grinding out the highest tier blaster before progressing. Kinda like what you could do in the interior of the first and second stage in Bionic Commando.

Did anyone else keep hearing "fluent controls" ? I hope he was actually trying to say "fluid".

He's been describing controls as "fluent" for many a review now, and while it's not the common usage, a quick dictionary reference reveals: easy; graceful: (eg. fluent motion; fluent curves). It's the use of "redundant" that I find more questionable, he's almost always tossing it out to describe something boring or monotonous, as in "this boss battle is the most redundant thing ever". Doesn't really apply if you're getting frustrated by a hugely long life bar or tedious strategy. No biggie, just a bit embarrassing to listen to.

As for the buffalo crapping in the window, I figured it was just an amusingly non-sequitur sort of conclusion referring to, if nothing else, the theme song. Buffaloes and diarrhea dumps and all that. Funny video, thought it was awesome.

http://www.atariprotos.com/2600/software/ewok/ewok.htmRob, Parker Brothers made good games back then. However, that was usually just with arcade ports. Frogger, Mr. Do, Popeye, Q*bert, etc. Though some original titles were good, like Moctezuma's Revenge. That can't be said for Star Wars. Empire, Jedi Arena, and Death Star were all lousy. Ironically, Ewok was the best game and they didn't release it. I know James doesn't like to show emu roms on his show, but I think he made a mistake by not showing game footage of Ewok. He could have gone off on how it was the best game and all.

The Famicom game is not a surprise it was so difficult, seems to have been a Famicom trend with licensed games. While they are hard, I really liked the Super Star Wars games. Graphics, music, and action were really good. But to this day, no SW games will have the affect that X-Wing and Dark Forces did for me on the PC. When I got those, I couldn't believe how realistic they were and it really rekindled the Star Wars bug for me. I became a "super fan," right up until Episode I was released.....

A bit of a side-step from the casual AVGN video, he has a MAGFest 9 (2011) coverage video. About a minute in he plays our Inviso-Frogger mod where we removed the frog sprite during play so it becomes quite challenging. It is an original Frogger PCB with the modified chip swapped in.

I'd say the use of fluent to describe controls is acceptable. I believe he's using redundant correctly, as he uses it to describe parts of games where you do the same thing over and over again.

I didn't think that episode was all that great, ok, but not great. The review part was good, but I felt the end part with the battle against ROB was weak. Of course, comparing it to the recent battle between Linkara and Lord Vyce on AT4W is a little unfair, but hey; the fight against the demon-possessed SMB3 a while back was a much cooler battle.

Graham Mitchell

I laughed my ass of when he chucked something at R.O.B. and knocked him over.

I felt I could relate to this video so well because I actually think Gyromite is a pretty well-made game that's fun to play with others. I just rember realizing how much better off I was controlling the gates myself and feeling like the whole R.O.B. thing is superfluous.

There's an interesting line in the video, where James says that he doubts Nintendo's revival of the video game industry had anything to do with R.O.B. I think there are many out there who would beg to differ, actually. If it wasn't for R.O.B., Nintendo and Worlds of Wonder couldn't have marketed the NES as a "Toy" rather than "those damn video games that nobody wants", and they never would have been able to get the NES in stores. It just so happened that R.O.B. himself was totally useless to the consumer. Unless you've got a hard-on for Stack-Up.

Couple questions about AVGN,

1. When he shows videos of gameplay, do he use an emulator?

I think he has to be using one. I don't know how else he would get that quality of video from filming a TV. It's weird because he shows that he does have all of those games on cartridge. To me emulators just aren't the same, so if I was filming myself beating all of these games I'd have to use the original system. (And he does have a shit ton of uncommon games)

2. Does it ever bother anybody when he destroys actual hardware/cartridges/peripherals?

I kinda of wince every time he breaks a cartridge/controller/system/issues of Nintendo Power. To me it's just that there's a finite number of these things out there and they're becoming less and less every day. I've heard suggestions that he doesn't really destroy them, but it looks very real when he does.

3. Why does he have so many overlays/decals on his controllers/systems?

I'm assuming it's probably just personal preference, maybe Nintendo Power giveaways or they originally came with games.

4. Is that literal "Toaster" Nes actually functional?

It's kind of cool, but the novelty would probably wear off and I'd be pissed that I destroyed a NES 2.

I'm not assuming everybody here knows all these answers, but I would feel like a weird fan if I e-mailed the show and asked. Just making some conversation material. :)

He says he doesn't, I'm sure he doesn't as well. He couldn't play Alfredo in the Action 52 video, a game which can be playable on a few emulators but has trouble with actual NES hardware.

2. Does it ever bother anybody when he destroys actual hardware/cartridges/peripherals?

I think some of the destroyed items are defective dummy carts. But to answer you straight, no.

3. Why does he have so many overlays/decals on his controllers/systems?

Maybe he just likes using stickers and such? When I had my game room as a teen I had all sorts of sticker crap everywhere. I'm sure quite a few other collectors do it as well, just to fit the atmosphere.

4. Is that literal "Toaster" Nes actually functional?

Yes.

3. Why does he have so many overlays/decals on his controllers/systems?

I figured it was because he gets some stuff donated so people send him their stuff that is in rough shape. Also he's said that he's bought stuff on Ebay so I bet he gets better prices because he doesn't care if it's covered in stickers

Pretty much anyone can review a game. Talking about your opinion of a game is simple; even I do it on my blog. AVGNs charm comes from the fact that most people aren't vulgar when it comes to reviews, and regardless of the quality of the game reviews, most people watch him for his crazy antics. Otherwise, if all we cared about was game reviews, we would all just go read IGN articles or watch Gamestop videos.

In my opinion, The Nerd could do no wrong until the Summer of 2007

The first sign of slight nerd deteriation was episode 31, Bug's Bunny's Birthday Blowout;as the scatalogical humor and too much Mike Matei bad acting ruined it for me(I like Matei on AVGN commentaries and as a behind the scenes guy). James would start to take this angle of poorly executed unfunny comedy bits too much going into the future as the reviewer I posted showed in his review. AVGN last great classic episode was The Wizard and SMB3 which pretty much wrapped up his childhood anger and signaled the start of a commercialized AVGN where he broke out games that weren't ones that invoked childhood anger less and less.

As you can see the best reviews are normally
games he played growing up so he has alot to
add to the review.

Also as you can see the worst reviews are when the
AVGN fakes anger on bad games he didn't even
probably play as a kid and when Matei or some
friend of James becomes too involved in the videos.

So even though James is a filmmaker first and likes having his friends in his various works, they just don't
mesh well in the AVGN universe.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3kTFVJdt4k&feature=player_embedded#at=723Pretty much anyone can review a game.

I agree with you 100%...but you accidentally attributed that quote to me. I never wrote that! It was ReaXan :)

Oh wow, a youtube video of someone with no personality commenting on another youtube video. I can't wait to watch.

I read that and I instantly looked to click ``Like``. Then I remembered this isnt facebook.

I hate facebook.
