I thought the Indiana Jones video was another perfect blend of comedy and straight review by AVGN.

Great great stuff. Glad to hear that the YouTube debachle was all a silly mistake.

Damn it. Now the prices of a Vectrex on eBay will increase dramatically.

The only problem with the AVGN is that every time he introduces a more obscure classic system, a bunch of casuals who watch his "funny Internet video" decide to hop on eBay and start looking to buy one.

I haven't gotten around to purchasing every classic system James owns yet so it makes me end up having to pay more when I finally get around to getting them.

I haven't finished watching the Star Trek episode yet, But I was laughing as soon as the music started. The more of Star Trek you've watched (Not "The Next generation",) The funnier it is. It also helps if you've watched the star trek movie "The Search For Spock"

Edit: What is wrong with the video? It stops before it ends! I'm stuck in the "1920s" Part!

just watched, very well done ep. by the AVGN folks. 25th Anniversary was just an incredibly long and boring and frustrating and drab game. It's PC alternative, also called 25th anniversary, was light years better, and even had the original cast providing voices. The NES version is right up there with the SNES games for DS9 and TNG, as well as PC's DS9 Harbinger, PC's TNG A Final Unity and ST Generations. All were decent games, and decent Trek games, but all were very long, dull, and required a walkthrough to keep from shooting the console or PC with a phaser. Interplay had the non-FPS Trek license for nearly all of the 90's. About all their games were good for was the video or audio featuring the actual cast members.

The AVGN hinted at a possible ROB video, right? Well, Irate already reviewed the ROB, so...

I'm sure he'll try to beat him to the punch.

Anyway. The Japanese version of Superman actually -has- the original movie theme. I have no idea why it's not in the US version, but I believe that a few other things were changed for the US market. Meh.

I never knew Superman for the NES was so horrible.

Superman for the Atari 2600 was decent, considering it was released in 1978 (or 1979?). It seems confusing, but I was able to beat it consistently in the early 1980s when I was five years old. Maybe I had more patience back then because I doubt I'd play it now.

Superman for the Nintendo 64 was garbage, but according to reviews, Carmageddon 64 and Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker were just as bad, if not worse. I'm interested to see what James thinks of it.

Actually, including video footage of the game would do much to distinguish it from the vast majority of commentary that exists on Superman 64.

Going back to Superman for a second...

I actually think that Superman for the NES is a decent game. People argue with me about this, but I just think what they wanted to do with the game was too ambitious for the hardware at that time. Add that to the shit translation job and you've got something that looks terrible on the surface. But it's actually a pretty cool game. I've played it all the way through. Thing is, it's not cool for reasons directly related to the Superman license. But, it's got some interesting non-linear gameplay and gives you the ability to build up your character not unlike Goonies II. Also, the music, while maybe inappropriate for a Superman game, is actually pretty interesting. Lots of dark melodies with minor chords...it sounds like something that belonged on the 4ad roster in the 90's.

All the gameplay issues he pointed out in the video had an explanation. One just needs to read the manual. I realize everybody thinks you shouldn't need to read a manual to play a game if it's any good, but think about this: ever try playing Metroid without a manual? Or how about some of those Activison 2600 games, like Private Eye? Those games don't suck--they just require a little imagination and some guidance.

Seriously, when I was a kid, I didn't realize that there was a point to metroid other than just wandering around killing shit. That was fine with me, but I didn't get a sense of the overall goal until I read up on it. Just how in the fuck are you supposed to figure out that you're supposed to kill Kraid, kill Ridley, shoot their statues, etc., unless you're told by an outside source. The game has zero text. You're dropped in there with no clue, no hints, no nothing. Kind of like Superman.

Greg2600

Superman for NES must have been a game developed in Japan for another purpose, and then they decided to change the sprites and call it Superman.

Really, you're comparing Metroid to SUPERMAN?? When I was 9 or 10, I had no problem figuring out what you were supposed to do.

It took some exploring, obviously, but I was never "stuck" and it was a worthwhile journey because the game was unbelievable in every aspect - the music, graphics, outstanding play control, great weapon upgrades, the entire alien environment, etc etc. You couldn't say the same for Superman for any of these.

Graham Mitchell

I wouldn't put the games in the same league because the overall presentation and quality of Metroid is what makes it stand out from other games of that era--something Superman severely lacks. But the whole free-ended gameplay element is kind of similar to Superman.

I was only trying to point out that a lot of the issues the Nerd had with the gameplay happen to be things that people ENJOY in other games. The one thing that always bugs me about his reviews (not that this is important, mind you) is that he picks on a game when he doesn't understand it just by looking at it. Could you understand how to use every item in Metal Gear Solid if you didn't look in the manual from time to time? I know it's supposed to be part of the comedy, but when you "can't understand" how to play a game, that's usually because you didn't spend time reading about it, to figure out how it works. That's not the fault of the designers, generally--especially for games hailing from the NES/SMS era. (If they're 2600 games, they probably wouldn't be fun even if you did know what's going on ;) ) It's not such an issue in modern games because they've all got some sort of built-in tutorial during the first couple of levels.

is it just me or are people getting a little more complacent about avgn?..
i mean even as rectently as the atari porn ep epople wouldnt dare speck a bad word about his shows in fear of being slammed to smitherines by the avgn fans..
now ive noticed lately its really taking a beating..

I gotta say that while I love the reviews, I'm tired of the little skits he does themed after the games. But I have a feeling he's doing this more to showcase his filmmaking talents more than just showing himself in his game room. And hey, it's worked. Looks like he's getting some work outside of AVGN...
