Hey Coldguy I saw it mentioned in the behind the scenes video that you were there. I was just curious what you were doing there.

Short Answer: Being a commentator for the fight, as well as having my little cameo. My articles and involvement for Transmission Awesome got me the invite and I can tell you I had a blast jumping around from production to production doing what little I could do to help out.

Long Answer: To be updated when I get time.

Kinda lacking, but it was enjoyable nonetheless.

I wonder if he will review the GB versions of T2? And he missed the SMS version of T1...

And I hope he reviews Robocop vs Terminator! SWEET game on the Genesis!

Just to clear up what he's talking about TGWTG.com did a 1 year anniversary "Brawl Battle" video that features the AVGN, TGWTG, Spoony, Little Miss Gamer, and Lee from Still Gaming among various other people in an amazing fight with each other.
TGWTG 1 Year Anniversary Brawl Battle (http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks/thatguywiththeglasses/nostalgia-critic/6719-1-year-anniversary-video).

It's epic-ness is on the level of a battle from Lord of The Rings. Really. That actually turned out a whole lot better than it could have. I'm sure it's inspired a lot of people to start making video reviews so that they can get invited to cool parties in Chicago. Or maybe not.

As for the new video, I also quite liked it. I was actually thinking that the dreary graphics and music in the NES game were evocative of the setting, but clearly that is overcome by the game's other issues.

And he missed the SMS version of T1...Come to think of it, I cannot recall if he has ever played an SMS game in one of his videos.

Part 2 should be entertaining considering LJN made T2 for the NES. I still have some nightmares about it.

Fun fact: Even though it's an LJN game... I actually enjoyed it and found the game to be very, very fun and challenging (and not because of sucky controls). I even beat it on a real NES!

Now the Genesis and SNES versions? Those can go eat a dick.

The ending... LOL

Great episode... he doesn't cover EVERY The Terminator game, but if you're going for the bad ones, looking at the NES and SNES ones is a pretty good choice... and the Sega CD one for a counterpoint with an actual decent game.

(There were also The Terminator games on the Genesis (from Virgin), SMS/Game Gear (also from Virgin), and PC (from Bethesda). The SMS/GG one appears to be a lot like the Genesis game, though not exactly the same, but other than that every version is an entirely different game.)

Oh, Virgin did the Sega CD one too... but despite also having that Genesis game, the Sega CD one is actually an entirely original title. Very impressive, and rare...

... Even though they're by a completely different company, Virgin, the SMS/GG and Genesis ones also have no saving. No lives either, evidently; you have a healthbar, but die once and that's it, start over from the beginning.

Oddly enough, NONE of the The Terminator games have continues or saving, even though they come from several different developers and publishers. How odd...

At least the Sega CD, SMS/GG and Genesis versions have level-select cheatcodes, though. That's something... the NES and SNES versions don't even have codes, as he said.

... Just played the Genesis and Sega CD ones some. The Sega CD one is clearly the best Terminator 1 game, no question, at least initially... I quickly played through two levels, quite enjoying it the whole time. The Genesis one is okay, but frustrating -- you start in a bossfight with only grenades. Then you dodge bombs. Then you go into a base and get a gun (and can fire all directions), but can't fire while moving, only when stopped... and then you set a bomb in the base and have a timer to get out. I couldn't figure out where to go (you don't have long), and it was game over. Bah. Even apart from that though, the Genesis one is okay, but the Sega CD game is definitely better across the board, in gameplay, graphics, and music. I'd heard that the Sega CD version was good, but hadn't actually played it. Well, it is good.

The best bit for me was when he woke up to find that the game limits you to only six lives.

I hope in his second review of the Terminator games he reviews T2 for GB along with the NES version. Game is awful.

He should also do a part three with good Terminator games, although they're more of Robocop games than Terminator games if you ask me, which the Genesis has the best version.

T2: The Arcade Game was awesome, it's one of my favorite light gun games ever... now given, the second level is nearly impossible in the credit-limited home console ports and there are only three levels, but still, it's a great game. :)

A Black Falcon
05-21-2009, 11:23 PM
I just have it for SNES, so I don't know... I have also played the Game Gear version before, though. It was on everything... :)

It is true that the SNES one supports the SNES Mouse as well as controller and Super Scope though, which is nice. I think on Genesis it just supports controller and Menacer, not the Mega Mouse. I don't have a Super Scope, but do have a mouse, and it's great with it. I'm terrible with light guns, so it's great to have a mouse option too.

Good video, plenty of pointed bits of commentary, good production value for the introduction, and the wrench idea was awesome. That said, I was disappointed there was no SMS or Game Gear comparison. The Terminator franchise hasnt exactly had a golden past though. Mostly crap. Lotsa crapetti.

The damned terminator games for SFC/SNES and MD/Gen were impossible and horrifyingly frustrating at times.

I remember for Terminator 1 for the Genesis that on the first level, if you press the wrong button and use the bomb too soon you cant get into skynet so you have to restart the level and fight this horrible, annoying robot thing thats a pain to beat...

I've liked his videos as of late. He's been a little more laid back and cool. Not as much over-the-top (and fake) anger. Less guest stars and special effects. Just the nerd and the game. I like it.

I agree. The reviews have been more honest, more interesting and more entertaining since he put the Beavis & Butthead humor to rest.

I don't mind a cursing rant, but the gimmick of finding different ways to insert feces and urine into the discussion got old pretty quick. Reminds me of that Aristocrats joke. So disturbing that it's funny the first time; boring after that.

As for the imitators, I can't think of a reason to waste the bandwidth to watch them.

Yeah, I agree that he's as good as ever... the one thing I've never really liked about his videos is that he likes poop-related humor a bit too much, I definitely still think he's great...

He probably is at his best when he's talking about a bad game and not a good one (really, T2: The Arcade Game is great... sure, the truck part is impossible, but other than that it's great. Yeah, it's simple. It's a light gun game. That's how they are. But anyway, at least he didn't say it was bad... now SNES T2, that was bad. :)), but still, yeah, he's still great.

Yes, I would say this is very true. He's evolving. His reviews seem to be getting better and better. As for the humor, it's hit or miss. But that goes for anything really. Some nights I think Conan O'Brien is really funny. And other times not at all. You can't really blame the guy for not being funny 100% of the time. Because NOBODY is funny 100% of the time. Either way, weather it's a really funny one, or just mildly amusing, he seems to always deliver in one way or another reviewing the games.

I think the nerd is getting worse actually. He's not really that great of a video game reviewer as some of the reasons that he bashes a game are way off base and the only reason it was fun to originally watch his stuff is because of all the swearing and comments he made. Some of his new stuff isn't all that bad as it is still watchable.

What's the reason you originally started watching the nerd? Probably because he's reviewing old games you disliked or even older games in general but rather than being entirely serious, it had alot of humor to watching it. If I wanted to watch a standard video review, I wouldn't want to watch one about a game I've played 20 years ago because I already know what the game is like, which is the reason I watch the nerds version as I know I'd get alot of entertainment out of them rather than just get information I already know about.

One thing about watching the nerds videos is that some of his complaints are because of the players skill. James, if you suck at the game, don't use it as a flaw in your reviews. It's just pretty stupid when he cries about the games bad level design because you can fall down a pit and die or something else that is difficult but not game breaking like he makes it out to be.

Perhaps the funniest thing is that you can't tell where the actual video voice overs end and the dubbed-over jokes begin.
