That was pretty cool.
Edit: After watching the video I have to say I'm pretty disappointed with how he presented the Intellivision. He made it seem like the whole system was crap and totally ignored some of the best games on the there. I'm certainly not looking forward to his next one.
People don't tune in to hear James gush about how great the good games for a system are, unlike The Incredible Hulk ... most people LIKE him when he's angry ... and tearing games new assholes.
Besides, he has a point. The controller is pretty asinine even if there were some games that made good use of it.

That's the point! He doesn't review good games, he reviews bad games! Quite a few of us have been seeing his reviews long enough to know this. ;)
His review style is sorta satirical. I just hope he doesn't do any scat jokes this time. :p

I've merged the "AVGN Thanks Digital Press" thread with this one. Thanks for the news! We can keep it all tidy here in one place.
I hope to meet him again. Now that I've actually SEEN his work, I have a little better understanding of what he's all about. It's kinda funny, meeting the really nice and polite guy at the store and THEN seeing his videos is exactly the opposite way 99% of his acquaintances meet him, I'd imagine.
Good guy and good work. I hope I can be of further assistance in the future!

We have to not forget... it's a comedy, he created this angry video game guy for fun.
Each time this angry guy said crappy things about what I consider important in the video game history, even the failures, I feel sorry for him and those who listen to him.
I have one Intellivision and, of course, a ColecoVision. I don't feel good these days, very busy and still have things over due in progress... and I will certainly feel bad during a couple of days when the Coleco part will came out.
But again, it's a show, an attempt to make some fun, so enjoy his videos, if you want to, and keep going with the video game collections. Don't feel sorry to have an atari5200, a power glove, a 32x, a sega cd, an intellivision, etc. Be proud of your collections.

To be fair, he did say both systems were cool for their time, and then he warned people that he was mostly going to be reviewing the bad games for the system. He never said all the games were bad.
I loved the hat tip at DP. Good video. Looking foward to the second part.

I doubt anybody feels "bad" about owning a Coleco or Intellivision just because "The Angry Video Game Nerd" made a video about the negative aspects of some of the systems' respective games/controls.
Joe even stated in the Herald News article that people have come to the Digital Press store to BUY software that James has reviewed.
It's fairly obvious that this is all tongue-in-cheek, and the ONLY people that I really "feel sorry" for are those who don't "get" that.
I believe that James Rolfe is a game collector and a retro enthusiast, and I don't believe that his goal is to turn the gaming world against Atari, Coleco, Nintendo, Sega, or ANY company or system through negativity. He's just playing a character, having some fun, and entertaining a segment of the gaming world who are pretty damned tired of being spoon-fed candy-coated-cookie-cutter-reviews like those found in "Nintendo Power".

That's pretty clear. I don't know if the place they film is his place, but someone has a pretty damn awesome collection. It's tough to think anyone but a true game lover would collect such a large amount of stuff. He seems to have most everything! ;-)

Since so many people called out what I said I figured there was no point in Quoting one and I'd just reply to everyone.
I know and love the AVGN, I tried to order his DVD the day it came out but there was a problem with shipping to Canada at the time so I waited and thankfully I did since I was able to get one of the autographed ones:rocker:
The problem I have is that he is reviewing a relatively unknown system and just talking shit about it. I know that he says a few good things about it but most people will only remember the bad. If he had just picked out a few titles that sucked and reviewed them on there own that would have been one thing but he is talking about the system as a whole and is mostly saying bad things about it.
Maybe I just have a problem with it since I love my intellivision too much:love:X_x

I felt the same way when he reviewed the Sega CD. He focused too much on the bad games and doesn't give it a fair review. Although, he is right about the design aspects, but the system does provide extraordinary games. (i.e. Lunar, Popful Mail, Snatcher, Batman Returns, etc.)
Anyway, if you don't like how he reviewed a particular game or system, why not make a rebuttal video?

See AlphaNerd01, he did a Sega CD rebuttal.

Actually, when he did the Sega CD video he mentioned that he was focusing on the shit games for it. He acknowledged that there were some classics that people are still obsessed with, and even mentions the name "Snatcher".
And he admitted when he liked some games with the Intellivision. He enjoyed Buzz Bomber, it appears.
But anyway, it's quite obvious that his videos are jokes, and if people are using them as guides of whether or not to try one of these games/systems than they have issues. His first video is just him badmouthing Simon's Quest for Chrissakes!

I love his episodes. This is for entertainment. Another thing to remember is his age and what games AVGN grew up with. Anyone from the Nes generation is going to be a little biased of older systems and vice versa. Its like someone who grew up with the playstation reviewing Nes games.

well, his documentary "What was i thinking?" on his DVD explained everything he is about when he gets into his "nerd persona". i didn't grow up during the times of the vision systems but im only 26... but i did have a 2600, 7800, and a NES when i was about 5-7yrs old.
everytime a AVGN episode comes out i watch other reviewers on the net to see other aspects of his rantings and theres. happy video game nerd, Urinating Tree, Armake 21, play it bogard, Irate gamer, ultra neko, oldschoolgamer82, and Little Miss gamer. its good to see reviews takes you back and you remember the memories LOL either bad or good.
also when the vision episodes came out, i looked up the intellivision and I was impressed with its technology, and im more of a history buff at gaming. i love learning things about systems and companies, i find it fun. this history is full of crappy games as well as hardware :-D
if you think AVGN is harsh when it come to reviews.. i have one thing to tell ya! Just watch the I-Rate Gamer on his take on contra. he just pissed me off so much on his contra review. i didnt think anyone could dislike contra so much, but thats also his persona "i-rate"

Just watched the Wizard of Oz episode, very very funny, and then the Intellivision episode, also terrific. I had one neighbor who had Intellivision, and played it a few times, over 20 years ago. I remember around 84/85/86, before NES got huge, I had only the 2600, and being only around 8 years old, shopping at Toys R Us, and couldn't understand why the Intellivision graphics looked so much better than the 2600, yet no one had the Intellivision. Jimmy explained why very clearly, the controls were hideous!

Pfft, Thats nothing. His Zombies Ate My Neighbors review pissed me off. Quote: "it deserves to be put through the meat grinder" Although he did point out a few true things in it, it doesn't deserve hate. Maybe if you're on a rescue spree and a chainsaw guy gets too close, But thats different.

Another great video. The INTV was my first game system, so at first it was kind of jarring to see some of my old favorites get trashed by the nerd. But it makes sence now that I think about it, I just got used to the crappy controls and don't think anything of them for most of the games. I guess anyone playing an INTV for the first time really would hate the controls with a passion. I'm surprised he didn't point out how painful hitting those fire buttons can get after a while. I'm looking forward to his Colecovision review.
[...] I just got used to the crappy controls and don't think anything of them for most of the games.[...]
Can you imagine the fury if someone released that controller today? I dare say someone may get physically injured. We didn't know there could be better designs. I look at it today and say, "Man, I played hours of Tron Deadly Discs and Utopia on THAT?!"

Well, sure, if you play it on the lowest difficulty level! The other levels put either a hawk, bat, or spider on each screen which gets more and more difficult to avoid depending on the difficulty.
But even on the lowest difficulty, there are jumps to be made, and they were sometimes challenging for someone younger than 10.

I liked the Colecovision review ... mostly because it featured some obscure titles that I had never seen in action.
It was a bit light on the humor, and even a bit light on the game-abuse, but it did feature a moment that I consider brilliant because I think most of us can say we've experienced it in our gaming lives ...
The segment with him playing Looping, and his wordless reaction to the experience was pure gold.
Nothing better than trying to "figure out" a game that defies most conventional logic.
I also liked the fact that he addressed the issue that people have with him focusing primarily on the negative aspects of games/systems : "That's the name of the game!"

Well, sure, if you play it on the lowest difficulty level! The other levels put either a hawk, bat, or spider on each screen which gets more and more difficult to avoid depending on the difficulty.
I'm still disappointed that Gargamel wasn't in the game at all. The final boss is... a skull to jump on? Uh, yeah... I guess the programmers gave up or something.
But even on the lowest difficulty, there are jumps to be made, and they were sometimes challenging for someone younger than 10.
The controls are awful, which makes the jumps harder than they look. Timing the "regular" jumps was somewhat tricky, which is why in the video you always see him jump twice. If you jump twice in place, the second jump is higher and automatically arcs.

My ColecoVision has been stored away in the basement for a while, but if I remember correctly, swirling the Genesis D-pad around somehow resulted in number pad input. I could never tell what game it ended up choosing, but it got me past the blue screen at least. (Note that this random number pad input really caused problems in games that actually USED the number pad!)
I've also heard that you can usually use the 2nd-player number pad to select a skill level.

Wasn't that impressed with Double Vision part 2, seemed like he phoned that one in. Was very rushed, especially since we know James is extremely well versed in classics and could talk a lot more.
Per Genesis controller usage, although I recently got a Genesis again, I've yet to use its controller on the 2600. However, I used to as a kid, because my Atari's were always broken. I was never a big fan of using it, and found it to be a lot less fun.

I agree. I'm a big fan of the Angry Video Game Nerd. His overview of the Atari 5200, the Sega CD/32X, Virtual Boy, etc. were entertaining, but his overview of the Intellivision and the ColecoVision were a little bit too short. They were good, but not quite as funny as usual. Maybe he didn't have enough games for them to do a more in-depth review.

.
I definitely agree, but it seems like he has been super busy with a lot of other projects too, and he might have taken on too much by doing a system + games + a 2 parter, so I'll give him a pass. Also because the first 2 minutes with the power brick were hilarious.
I really didn't like the last 3 minutes or so just being the guy singing, again.. I thought we were going to get another awesome bonus like on the Intellivision video. (Which I dug a ton, not so much part 2).
He is saying that in the future, he isn't really going to do anymore 2 parter's or really long reviews with added fluff, he is just going to stick to reviewing the games, similar to how he used to do back in the day. IIRC, he said it's because he has other projects, but likes doing AVGN, so this way he can still do both because AVGN isn't taking up a lot of time.
I am super excited for his Rocky movie where he went to every place Rocky went to in Philadelphia.
