I'm sure the money he makes for being one of the most popular people on the internet isn't enough. He works hard on his videos. I have no problem with him selling props and games.

well, since they both sign the items i would assume so. also, it seems like the biggest money makers are the title screen drawings (the metal gear one sold for $510). you'd think whoever actually drew it would get the majority of the profit for those.

He deserves every penny. He entertains people on the internet for free, has entertaining quality videos and is a nice guy and supporter/friend of Digital Press :-D:-D
Most of the games and systems he gets are given to him for free. He uses them on his reviews, sells them off with an autograph on them for a pretty insane amount considering the original game would probably be $1 shipped(or for a system a bit more.) He's making out.
He doesn't deserve every penny. His reviews have become very shitty as of late. His most recent review was decent, but alot of his prior most recent reviews just suck. The "James and Keannu" comparison I made awhile back is pretty much true.

As long as he is selling the games form the ACTUAL videos they were used in I have no problem with this, however if next week he has like a dozen copies of Bugs Bunny's Crazy Castle for sale also autographed then I do and really I don't think he would be that stupid.
He is selling merchandise used by him as props in a feature, I see no problem with that, tons of celebrities do it.

You're in luck, Michael Moore's "Capitalism - A Love Story" is opening this weekend nationwide. You'll find lots of similar sentiment at those screenings! Let's hope we can finally find the right person or people that will decide for us who needs to make money and how much, instead of leaving it to the stupid paying customers to decide!

Let's be fair.
A person can point out areas where capitalism seems to need better regulation (e.g. The pharmaceutical industry, weapons manufacturers, and in Moore's case, a corrupted banking industry) without approving full-blown socialism.
Sometimes we criticize things because we want to improve them. Not because we want to totally replace them.

Yes, but Moore does want to totally replace capitalism. In his own words Capitalism is evil and has never done anything for him. Yes, ... he said that.

Does Micheal Moore really want to completely replace capitalism?
"I think at one point... capitalism when it was the old way, y'know wasn't a bad idea because a lot of people invested in things they wanted to support, and y'know you could open a business and provide services and goods for people. But we're way beyond this now [...] and we suffer as a society because of that."
-Moore
It sounds pretty clear to me, that Moore approves of certain forms of capitalism.
I find arguments more effective when backed up by evidence.

This review was pretty good. Not because it was Castlevania, but because he gave himself a good amount of time to actually review it and went through detailing everything in the game.
One thing that did suck about his review is it showed like alot of them that he does, that he just isn't good at video games. Sure alot of people think of Castlevania as hard, but I dunno. XYXZYZ got good at the game and finished it in one life in a week. Did James just throw this review together in a day because the video sure as hell shows he had absolutely no skill in the game.
Whatever though. I'm glad he's reviewing the series though. I actually want him to do a Castlevania 2 review instead of jumping right to Castlevania 3 as well, this way we'll be able to see how he's changed. Will his review be as good and as detailed as his original CV2 review, possibly showing a bit more? He also stated hearts are only for currency in this last review, even though he used the flames to kill Dracula in his original review which use hearts, though perhaps he didn't know so maybe replaying through the game he might find out(and maybe he might also realize how terrible the flames are compared to the Golden Knife.)
It'd also be nice if James does the entire series instead of just the earliest games in the series. Meaning Castlevania, 2, 3, 4, Vampire Killer, Haunted Castle, Chronicles, Bloodlines, Adventure, Belmont's Revenge, Rondo, Dracula X, DXC, SotN, Legends, 64, LoD, CotM, HoD, AoS, DoS, PoR, OoE, OoS, LoI, CoD, and Judgment. Or atleast those released in the US. I doubt it's going to happen, but if it does, it'll be a long list of videos for his fans of one of the best series ever released.

I was also thinking this.
While watching the video, I also got the impression that the AVGN isn't good at games, but I honestly feel that the "character" of the nerd plays like a normal gamer would, despite being a "game nerd."
But yeah, whether or not he was good at Castlevania really doesn't matter, since it was from his perspective as a youngster.
onReload
10-08-2009, 11:12 PM
I personally think that, character or not, it doesn't matter how well he plays the games. Average is the majority, and so frustrations for a normal gamer are what should be addressed.
For example, when he mentioned the hallway with the two axe knights and medusa heads, I knew what he meant, and also thought "oh right, i remember getting over that after doing x, y, and z" - but I don't know if that makes me a good gamer; should a good gamer be able to pick up any game and know the tropes and adapt instantaneously, or should he learn quickly from his mistakes? If it's the latter, that doesn't really make for a good video review, especially if it's from the perspective of a kid - we were all pretty stubborn at that age (well, I was...).
If he showed a problem area then said, "Well really, all you have to do is time your jumps, as the enemies have a consistent pattern," it would feel more like a strategy guide, and these videos are big nostalgia trips for a lot of viewers, so marinating in the frustration is a lot more like being a kid again. That's just how I see it.
As far as this video goes, I'm glad he's not digging for increasingly obscure games just to very obviously force out a few poo jokes anymore. It was something I was able to initially overlook, then grew to despise, but he's a solid game reviewer and I hope he continues along that route with this series.

I think onReload is on point. James is more representative of what most people feel while playing Castlevania and other games. If you can beat Castlevania with one life, then great. Most people don't practice the same game for a week straight until their thumbs fall off. This is a comedy video, not a guide on how to perfect the game.

Also, the character of the nerd is obviously supposed to relay the feelings kids had while playing the games in the 80's. The whole show seems to be a reflection of that.

Agreed as well. Some of you need to step down from your high horse about how you're so great at video games. The point of games is entertainment and fun, something that is completely thrown out the window in the titles James reviews - which is grounds for said frustration.

I have noticed that the AVGN mostly likes to review games that tie into pop culture like his Wayne's World review. Its a good strategy to keep his casual viewers happy even though they sometimes tend to be bland in my opinion compared to his older work where his anger is fueled by childhood disapointment.
The Monster Madness thing is kind of annoying to me however. I know he is a big horror buff (as am I) but I can never really get into his reviews of like 1930's horror or Godzilla. Its a big part of his personality so I guess I can excuse it because it is part of his overall genius.

You know, every time I go to a bar to watch the Jets inevitably lose, I inevitably come across a guy who came to that bar decked out in the colors and logos of the Jets opponent for the week. Rather than just watch the game and enjoy himself with other sports fans, he decides to spend his three hours stirring up shit and trying to get under everyone's skin. Doesn't matter what just happened in the game -- the Jets scored, the Jets punted, the opponent scored, the opponent punted, first down, second down, fourth down... you get the idea -- he finds something to shit on.
He seems to know anything and everything about the Jets, and by the time the game is over, he has ruined everyone's good time and then wonders why people are trying to punch him in the face.
I'd say "you are that guy," but I would hope that you caught the extended metaphor.

I thought his second review was better than his first. The only problem I see is when he was complaining about the water. Of course the water is going to be the most dangerous part in Castlevania 2 when your jump clearly makes no intention of passing it.
That's like saying the stealth aspect is the most stupid part of a Metal Gear or Metal Gear Solid title and then running right through every enemy without bothering and wondering why they chase you.

The biggest dig I could see, is another shot about the game being a "Nintendo Power" piece, basically things that are so obscure that you can't see how anyone would manage to figure it out randomly, and would have to fork over money for an issue of the magazine (cha-ching!) in order to progress.
