No, he's right. Jaws may be mediocre, but it's certainly not bad. Unlike a lot of other LJN games, this one is actually beatable (as James showed in the video.) If anything, it's disappointing instead of rage inducing.
GDRI (http://gdri.smspower.org/wiki/index.php/Company:Escape/Westone/Westone_Bit_Entertainment) says Westone developed the game, which would explain why it didn't suck.

Just because Jaws is beatable doesn't mean it's good. Moving a little boat from one spot to another over and over again isn't my idea of fun.
The movie is classic. The NES game is feces.

There a lot worse games than Jaws. It's just bland, which is a crime apparently. If you think of it as an early 80s arcade game, it has about the same depth, just with considerably less difficulty.

Jaws was released in late 1987. By then, we had Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Kid Icarus, Rush 'n Attack, Castlevania, etc. Compared to what was available at the time, Jaws was already garbage.
Plus, it has nothing to do with the movie. Remember the scene where the guy kept diving into the water and shooting jellyfish? Remember when the crew shrunk themselves and got inside a miniature submarine? Remember when they had to keep collecting seashells and traveling back and forth between two docks ad infinitum? I love that part.

Given that I for one detested having to constantly do those pointless battles out of the blue in Zelda II....The frequency at which you are forced to do so in Jaws is unbelievable. One other thing about Jaws, which James I don't think realized, is that this game was almost entirely based on the hideous Jaws The Revenge movie, also from 1987. Not just the final scene where you spear the shark with your boat. The boat in the game is the boat from The Revenge, as is the plane (flown by Michael Caine). The port has palm trees, like the Bahamas (site of the fourth film). The diving stage I guess could be an homage to the ending of the first film with Richard Dreyfus, but I don't remember a minisub in any Jaws movie. What's really odd is that the developer is Westone, who made the popular Wonder Boy games.

No you were right on. There is a minisub that they use in Jaws IV, while diving for conch shells. Comparing the game to the movie Jaws IV, the game is an unbelievable success.

in defense of many of the poorly recieved movie tie in games, it is really dificult to make a game based on many of the movies and keep it topical. hell there was a radio flyer game in the works at one point (seriously)

Another angle: It took one of the least notable Westone games to make LJN look somewhat competent.
The recent Jaws game enjoys some cult popularity... It is rather fun. I don't think Nintendo would have gone for that concept on the NES back then.
So, how to handle the license? Be the Shark. Fishing, even for a legendary silverscreen monster, is boring.

Decent video, the Jaws part was okay..I can't put my finger on it. The Jurassic Park bits were great, and ET jokes were the best. I don't think we'll see another AVGN until August or so, James said this was the last for a long while.

Ninja Gaiden style cutscenes, Shadowgate style evidence collecting scenes, first person shooting scenes where the shark is popping its mouth out of the water while attacking my boat. You could also have a Super Star Wars style boss fight where the shark jumps on_to the boat and shoots fricking lasers out of its head.
Somebody give me a large lump of cash please, and I'll make it happen.
I went back and watched a bunch of his old videos, but when I started the Indiana Jones video, I gave up. Almost every single complaint he had about the game could be avoided by reading the instruction book which came with the game. I owned this game when I was a child and it was actually very easy. I used to finish it repeatedly with ease, and always tried to better my score. I thought it was a great game at the time.
I realized that many of AVGN's complaints for most games were related to simply not knowing how to play. Legit complaints about a game were often humorous, but intentionally making himself ignorant got stale.

There was a flurry of discussion about James/AVGN on The Howard Stern Show this morning.
One of Stern's regular remote interview contributors "Wolfie" was at Too Many Games last week and interviewed a bunch of awkward attendees for comical reaction.
Almost every single person he interviewed mentioned that they were there to see James, and Stern's show producer Garry "Baba Booey" Dell'abate had researched who "The Angry Video Game Nerd" was and chimed in when Howard and Robin questioned "Who's the Angry Video Game Nerd?".
I'm not sure if James is a Stern fan, but it was certainly very cool to hear the gang talk about him in a reasonably favorable light. Howard even commented/speculated on James' income situation vs. some of the admittedly unemployed attendees at Too Many Games "... The Angry Video Game Nerd must be cleaning up!"
I be he'll see a nice spike in site visitation/video viewership thanks to this spot.
Good for him.

Howard Stern hasn't been relevant in our culture since he moved to satellite radio in 2004.
People used to listen to him on the radio, watch him on TV, read his books, watch his movie, and talk about him around the water cooler every day. Now, I haven't heard his name mentioned in five years. In one fell swoop he went from being completely on top of all media, to being a long forgotten memory.

Don't be too sure about that. Hes pretty popular amongst xm/sirius subscribers and a lot of people joined sirius just to hear him. I know sirius' stock jumped when he renewed his contract this year.
Granted, requiring the subscription alienates some of hire former listeners, but hes still got a sizable audience.

A sizable, secluded audience. While a lot of people joined Sirius to hear him, a lot haven't stayed around, if Sirius's stock is any indication. Hell, he's popular with SiriusXM subscribers because he's basically keeping the service afloat.

This. Take a look at the guests he gets. No one A list anymore. Hey look out, Hollywood! Howard's got Doug Stanhope and Insane Clown Posse! Maybe David Arquette will call in for the gorillionth time.
It also doesn't help that the risque and shock humor he builds himself upon has been eclipsed by places like 4chan. He doesn't stand out anymore.
It's funny listening to this as Howard himself is a chess nerd and Gary is a music nerd. Especially Gary - the level of game nerds that we are pales to the level of music nerd that Gary is. But he'd justify it as music is cool and games are not.
Howard has always thought video games were stupid so it's no shock we get something like this when they discover a game show like TMG, which makes for an easy target.

I have been a huge Howard fan for about 10 years now.
He still has his moments of comedic genius, but basically everyone, even on his own fan forum say he is a shadow of his former self. All his fans say he should have retired at the end of 2010, yet he came back for another 5 years contract...
http://www.sternfannetwork.com/forum/showthread.php?t=604897
http://www.sternfannetwork.com/forum/showthread.php?t=604636
Basically he gets paid so much money from SirusXM for his job that he can't find it in himself to retire even though the product he gives these says is mostly mediocre with a few bright spots. However he is good to listen to on a cross country trip, it makes the car ride alot faster.
Also to defend Stern on some level; he basically says these kind of rants because he hates waking up at 4am in the morning at age 54 and also because he has 4-5 hours to fill everyday on his show and he is quickly running out of relevant topics to talk about. He will talk about anybody or anything to pass time. Stern has also said in the past he use to be a gamer back in the 2600/NES days, but lost interest.
He is basically jealous of some gamers because they get plenty of sleep and he doesnt.
But don't worry gamers, he got on the wrong side of Lady GaGa who is 3 times more famous and she ripped him a new one. Wish I could find the link

Stern's show is a waste, his Sirius channel is a waste. What makes me irate is that Sirius, led by Stern's pal Mel Karmazin, has cut a lot of jobs and good people from it and XM, so they can pay Stern's bloated contract. The Opie and Anthony show is topical, 5 days a week, funny, and gets good guests.

Well, Howard 100/101 has always been awful filler.
Love him or hate him, if it wasn't for Howard Stern sirius would have already went bankrupt. Not an opinion but a fact. He has brought in the majority of the subscribers. When he leaves in 5 years sirius/XM will go under. Nobody wants to listen to static filled music from satellite. Also, I would consider Chris Rock, Jimmy Kimmel and the Foo Fighters to be A- list guests (all have been in studio in the last month). He had Ted Nugent and Dennis Rodman in the studio within the last week (not A-list but interesting guests). Also, making fun of Video Gamers (playing off the stereotype of geek) is no different than when Conan O'Brien would go to the Star Wars conventions and make fun of them. Its all in fun. Don't take things so seriously.

He had no choice. I like all his reviews, games, movies, TV, etc., though I don't get to watch them all. However, the AVGN character is what sets him apart, and to go on a 2 or 3 year hiatus would be I think fatal to the character. It's going to be tough I think to have the fanbase he has had, still in tact, whenever that movie gets finished. Honestly, his ship may well already have sailed, probably should have started the movie production a year ago.

I agree with this
even though the AVGN movie is probably going to have some funny parts, its mostly going to include bad acting/amateur production values and a ton of Mike Matei scenes that will drag on that maybe 5 people will find funny.
The AVGN was so popular because he tapped into our childhood anger, has he forgotten that?. He had the same gripes about the same games we played and wanted to like, yet couldn't because they sucked so bad. Him reviewing stuff like Cheetahmen makes little sense as most of us never played that game growing up.He is now trying to create anger instead of it being genuine.
I dont blame him for milking this AVGN as long as he can as he does make money with it. I just dont want to endure more Matei scenes and complaining about bad games we never even played going into the future. It already looks like that however :(

OK, we're both over analyzing here but I'm going to say this anyway.
Had he continued to do the same games we all played but found frustrating over and over (I'll never forget spending money on Gotcha! The Sport and dying I couldn't get that money back) we'd grow tired of it.
I think he's popular because he's the only one I've ever seen that comes across as even remotely professional. The angry schtick works because watching a guy review an old game on it's own is boring in and of itself. The persona allows the reviewer to have some fun with things.
Every other persona I've watched (including those that just be themselves) comes across like a guy in his basement reviewing games. AVGN came across like a TV show about a guy in his basement reviewing games.
Just my two cents (and as I said, way too over analyzed for such a simple thing).

It would be nice if he actually knew how to use the C64 before he made the video. He complains about the games "not working" when really he just doesn't know how to load them properly.
Also, there's a pretty decent port of the arcade game that I guess he's not aware of... I think it was PAL only though, so it might not have worked anyways. In fact, that european cassette he has might have had major timing issues too.
