Ironically I've kinda been wanting to play this game again recently. This was one of those "I rented the Genesis version as a kid but never played it since then" deal... though I did once walk into a Showbiz Pizza that had the arcade machine, with the bike-handle controller. That actually kinda scared me off of playing it IIRC.

That episode was fun, but weirdly felt more like an episode of Weird Video Games than AVGN. Or maybe I've just forgotten what AVGN was like, as I haven't been watching him on a regular basis like I used to.

I have B&B for my Genesis and I've put about 5 minutes into it as the controls were too confusing for me without a lot of trial and error that I wasn't in the mood to put in. In other words, the game kind of suck...huh huh huh.

The funny thing about the name pronunciation is that when the video first came on and he said "Beren-steen" I said to myself "Beren-steen? I've never heard anyone pronounce it like that."

Guntz
10-20-2016, 06:06 PM
Well, like he said, Beren-Stine is probably the more accurate pronounciation, but it's easy for people to repeat something different out of habit. I remember Beren-Steen a lot too.

It's amazing that people of a certain age have been so coddled and told nothing they think is ever wrong that they'll go to the insane step of theorizing alternate universes rather than admit they have bad memories.

Not a criticism of James himself, just this whole nutsack theory itself that he used to make his pretty funny episode.

This just felt kind of in limbo to me. If it was a pure AVGN video, he'dve talked a ton more about each accessory, and used way more profanity. If it'd been a pure Apicary video, all of the physical comedy would've happened, and with a little luck, some shenanigans where he accidentally beats up Kelly or goes on a quixotic VR adventure to a supermarket. Their styles of presentation didn't really mesh all that well. I did chuckle at Keith's complete ignoring of everything when he came to and saw another present.

Mangar

I have/had no idea who Apicary is. However, this years Christmas video I found to be terrible. Really the only AVGN video that I actively dislike, and I do like some of the others people don't enjoy. (Ikari Warriors is one of my favorites)

I watched that Mandela Effect video just now.

1) God, James must've gotten SOOOO many replies about the "two different movies about Captain Marvel in 2019" thing (for those not in the know, there's two completely different superheroes--one owned by Marvel, one originally created by Fawcett but now owned by DC--both called "Captain Marvel")

2) Kinda surprised he says he couldn't find the clip of the Joker-Dollar. I mean... its right there in the footage he shows. The face on that dollar really does look like the Joker.

I got Sonic '06 right when it came out. I think it was launch day, in fact, November 14, 2006. If it wasn't that date it was very shortly after. I remember it was November. I was just shy of 14 years old. I got Game Informer and they said it was 6.75 / 10. I thought, "I'm a Sonic fan, and 6.75 isn't that bad of a score, it probably has some flaws but I'll enjoy it." My parents blew 60 bucks + tax on this turd. That's almost 80 bucks total in today's money!

I never made it out of Soleanna. I ran around everywhere and even talked to a few people for about 45 minutes before I put it down. I wanted to give the game a chance, my parents had spent a lot of money. I never played it again. To this day I still have my copy, in mint condition.

I paid 25 bucks for Skyrim Legendary Edition on June 16, 2015 and have gotten over 150 hours out of it; I expect something like 350 total. That's about 7.2 cents per hour. Can't beat that value.
Sonic '06, on the other hand, was a staggering $105.73 per hour in today's money!
For Skyrim to have the same value as Sonic '06, it would have had to cost $37,005.50! That's pretty solid proof of how shitty Sonic '06 is.
A good game will give you at least an hour of lifetime gameplay for each dollar it cost. Sonic '06 gave me 34 seconds of play per 2017 dollar.

Not one of his best episodes, but a solid episode nonetheless. I'd give almost all AVGN episodes 8 to 10 out of 10; Sonic '06 was a 10, this one's about an 8.5, definitely worth a watch.

It's cool to see him getting to games of the generations I grew up on. I didn't have Planet of the Apes though.

I'm iffy on AVGN these days. Like, sometimes I have fun with him but then there are videos like Super/Virtual Hydlide which just annoy me because he's so clearly trying to make the games sound worse than they are (Super Hydlide at least is legit good. Not fantastic, but Nerd's video is just him complaining about his own idiocy and unwillingness to explore and not the game itself... tho the weight system can be annoying early on).

His episode about magazines seemed about just as forced to come up with something bad. Some points he brought up, like bad screen shots, were not an issue back in the day. The readers pretty much knew the mags couldn't always get great shots of games. So it was a lot of hot air for an attempt at entertainment with no real beefs.

Edmond Dantes
04-27-2019, 12:47 PM
Really I was hoping the magazines ep would at least be something nostalgic, like the Nintendo Power episode was, and some parts of it were (I remember the Sega Saturn ad with the naked woman--reading that magazine in the car with my mom driving was really, really awkward). I kinda wish he had gone on longer and talked about more stuff, but yeah, it wasn't good overall.

Of the more recent episodes the one I liked most was the Game Boy Accessories, I wish more were on that level.

Sorry if this is old news to everyone else, but I just learned that earlier this year that the Irate Gamer did a crossover with AVGN.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWAeXHmOH-c

What I find kinda funny and sad is that this felt genuinely passionate compared to AVGN's recent content, and it was also subtly nostalgic re: the angry reviewer community. This is the first time in years I've seen even a subtle mention of people like Armake21.

Nostalgia is pretty much the only reason I watch these kinds of videos anymore, as now I usually prefer either informational videos, or else actually playing the games.

I recently tried out three games AVGN reviewed--Silver Surfer, Paperboy, and Friday the 13th (two of those I had previous experience with, but Surfer was new to me). None of them are as bad as he said, and I would like to do my own reviews because I thought a lot of AVGN's problems were dumb, but I had different problems with each.

Silver Surfer especially, as he basically complained about things that are true of any shmup, but only briefly touched on one of the real issues the game has--that its hard to tell what's a background object and what's actually dangerous.

I never understood how anyone could be confused by the map in Friday the 13th.

I probably mentioned this before but I prefer his movie and TV review stuff.
His early movie and TV reviews are pretty good, but his recent stuff where he just randomly talks about various movies with his friends to copy the style of Red Letter Media is pretty bad. They're just not as fun or enjoyable to watch as Red Letter Media, their personalities just aren't entertaining/charismatic enough to hear rambling on unscripted for 40-50 minutes straight. With the few of his videos like that I've watched I just got bored and stopped watching them within 10-20 minutes.

I haven't watched that crossover, maybe I will as you're saying it's actually good. A lot of the early reviewers are still creating content, PlayItBogart is still uploading videos though they're now mostly just long videos of games he streamed. And maybe a month or two ago youtube randomly recommended videos by Urinating Tree, though he only reviews sports now and avoids video games entirely. No idea why that got recommended to me at all. Technically Spoony still posts uploads on youtube, but he just streams random games now instead of doing any reviews. I haven't watched his content in years. I won't watch 4-5 hour long videos of streamed content, I don't know who has that much time to dedicate all at once to internet videos. Youtube was pretty fun 10-15 years ago, there's obviously still stuff to watch regularly but it feels completely different now. In a way it was better before people made content to actually live off of as a career, people made videos for fun and there were lots of shorter videos. And no sponsorship ads before every video advertising VPNs and other crap. Most videos feel pretty artificial now like most professionally produced content.

Sure don't get that presumption from Mike's statement. As I said, producing those episodes no longer make any sense, as everything has gone to Twitch streaming.

Also, the penis thing was a brief one-time likely drunk moment 3 years ago which he basically erased as well he could. Yes the Loco Bandito stuff was very bad, also date to the 2000's, and he apologized for them. They were poor attempts of satire (style of R. Ever watch an interview with a convicted serial killer? they come off as being the nicest person you'd ever meet.

I think there's a lot going on with that dude and based off what Ive seen him willing to say and do on camera, I can only imagine what is said behind closed doors.

I know it's fashionable to hate on the successful people but I guess it's hard for me to seperate the person from the show they are putting on... James is the only stand-up person among the people he associates with in his videos.. it's hard to watch and be entertained by a person who clearly has some very dark and twisted thoughts... As for the apology and his reforming, ok, if he reformed, awesome. Ive just never seen any mention of it in any of the videos Ive watched... I guess most the fans dont know or dont care.

and maybe I am just cynical, but I don't think people change. not unless they are fucked up in the extreme like former Nazis, former criminals... to me, unless someone is confronted about their behavior, or it's affecting their job, they dont see themselves as bad enough to try and change.. again if he apologized or disavowed his "former self" great. I just think if someone is nearing 40 years old, shit they did in their mid-30s... like what they were douchebags for the first 37 years and now theyve learned their lesson but they never once mention that they suddenly had this awakening? uh right

ok I just read an apology which appears to be written by him... and honestly it just really tells you where his head is at. he basically said "if anyone is offended by this, I apologize." that's like pooping in the middle of the street, getting up, then afterwards saying, "if anyone was grossed out by that, I'm sorry."

Well what's really telling is that HE isn't disturbed by what he drew/wrote.

I have family members who will do the same shit. "well I'm sorry if that offends you." okay, so the thoughts are still in your head, you're just gonna make sure those thoughts don't come out because others find it disagreeable. uh okay

"I'm Gonna Do What's Called a ProJared Move."

For anyone unfamiliar with ProJared feel free to look him up, I'm pretty sure most people are well aware of what this youtube reviewer did a few years ago. LOL

James is the only stand-up person among the people he associates with in his videos.
James comes across that way, but he's pretty close in mindset to the people he associates with. Just look at any of his early videos, basically full of swearing, fake diarrhea repeatedly on various games and guest characters, Shit Pickle, Wizard of Oz 3: Dorothy Goes to Hell, Mecha Christ, Munky Cheez, etc. It's really the same style of humour. And I still remember him shilling the new Action 52 game from a few years ago which was another controversy.

ok I just read an apology which appears to be written by him... and honestly it just really tells you where his head is at. he basically said "if anyone is offended by this, I apologize." that's like pooping in the middle of the street, getting up, then afterwards saying, "if anyone was grossed out by that, I'm sorry."

Well what's really telling is that HE isn't disturbed by what he drew/wrote.
What should he say? That he really was offensive to others and definitely took things too far, and is open to litigation if anyone really feels like they suffered over it? Nobody would say anything different as they would be opening themselves up to possible legal issues.

Really most teenagers and young adults say and do offensive things, usually trying to be funny or edgy. I don't exactly love Mike or James like serious fanboys but I don't hate them either, I'm more neutral to them as people. I don't personally find that old content of his funny, it's mostly offensive and not well made, but not all humour is found to be funny by everyone. I'm more bothered by the constant need for everything to be overly politically correct, which wouldn't allow George Carlin's comedy to be performed today. If anything I would say he wasn't afraid to be creative, though the end result was mostly mediocre.

I never saw the point of rental reviews when most of the time james was being talked over,by his cronies :p That being screenwave media.Ditto twitch before mike left he was all ready doing live streams full time there.
I really don't know who those other people are on that show, they seem to have other separate content unrelated to James but I've never really looked into it. I do recognize one of them being from the Game Chasers show which I also didn't like much.

With Rental Reviews it's like they tried to combine Best of the Worst with the re:View show into one thing, but those are two differently structured shows that don't mesh well together. One just watches and makes fun of movies, the other covers a movie in depth describing why it's worth watching and how it was made behind the scenes. Rental Reviews tried to do both things at once but wasn't well structured or edited down so they mostly try to talk more about a film but don't actually talk enough in depth about it fact wise and just talk about when they first saw it and then mention weird or memorable scenes they remember in a rambling sort of way without further explanation about why those scenes matter or why they're important to the film. At least that's how the few videos I've watched came across, I think I did watch one or two of them all the way through to see what they were like, and tried to watch a few others part way before giving up.

I also find it funny how James is saying Rental Reviews is being discontinued because of Covid in that it's difficult for everyone to get together for filming. It's not being postponed or put on hiatus until Covid is solved and things are resumed back to normal, it's just outright discontinued. I'm sure there's more to it than just Covid, I mostly doubt it became popular enough to continue unlike how the AVGN character did. Just looking at Red Letter Media, their most recent Best of the Worst was posted 3 days ago and has 634K views; and Rental Reviews oldest video on Commando from 2 years ago has 627K views with their newer videos usually having far fewer views. On average the Rental Reviews videos mostly seem to just get about 1/4 the views as Red Letter Media for the same time period.

My point was simply that Mike did not "leave" AVGN over any of those circumstances.
We really don't know what happened behind the scenes, there's still a good chance he could have been asked to leave and publicly it was decided to keep everything on good terms.

All I'm gonna say is that I've never felt compelled to draw violent and racist cartoons and it seems like people are defending him simply because he has some creative talent in the videos he does with James. if this guy flipped burgers at McDonalds and had no claim to fame outside his dumbass comic, I think people would say he is a garbage human being. And again, the stuff he said about James was really disgusting. I dont think many people know about what he said nor am I going to repeat it but again it's part and parcel of what you get with this guy.

I've heard about some pretty fucked up stuff with the Screen Wave guys as well and I just have that in the back of my mind any time I watch their stuff.

Truth be told we all have some skeletons but I feel it's how we address those skeletons and if we have made amends that counts. I dont see that with any of those guys

I've only seen one of his cartoons after searching to know what people were talking about, it was pretty offensive but it did seem to be intended as satire. Like someone making fun of what an intended racist cartoon would be like, showing how stupid the humour would be. It didn't comment on any stereotypes of various races, it was his character attacking other races as a checklist of races to be racist towards. Like for a racist cartoon to be funny, just being racist is enough to be considered a joke, as that's what racists find funny. It really wasn't well made or thought out, or funny, but that's what it seemed the intention was.

What creative talent did he contribute with James? Is it some of the writing? He always seemed like he was just invited to be on the show with James.

I know nothing about any of this, I didn't even know they were a part of a named group rather than just being random individual guys occasionally making videos. I never looked into them to do any research, I just wasn't too impressed with any of their content to seek them out.

I think in one of the Rental Reviews the fat one, I forget his name, mentioned how he played Steven Segal in a parody video he made years ago, and showed a brief clip of it. I actually remember seeing it on youtube, but never would have thought he made it. It's just one of those random amature videos that gets posted on youtube, it didn't feel like it was made by a professional or a recurring show.

LoL satire. that reminds me of Alex Jones's lawyer saying he is just playing a character. so that way he cant get in trouble for calling for violence against Democrats

for the record I met both Mike and James in person. they seemed like great guys. I didnt find out about the comics til after the fact and the cock photo thing happened years after the fact. whatever he has going on in his head, I dont now what it is. the only thing i have in common with him is that we both like old games and old shitty movies. theres plenty of other entertainers out there. I prefer Game Sack. and My Life in Gaming. if I find out those guys fucked kids or something then I guess Im done with them too
