a classicaly BAD NES game from an early enough period in NES games (very close to launch) that a TON of people bought it without knowing any better.

Yeah, I remember playing Deadly Towers at my friend's house in early 1988 before I had an NES. It was horrible and I don't think I ever played another Broderbund game again.

I disagree with James about the cover art, though. I find nothing wrong with it. It's actually pretty good.

I'm in agreement with pretty much everything that was posted here. I appreciate James for trying to be innovative, but it just didn't work out this time. This one failed miserably. I didn't laugh once because it was so apparent how forced the profanity and insults were.

But, as I said, I appreciate the experiment. I'm not knocking James for that. I just have to admit that I didn't enjoy it... not even a little.

The Nerd's Deadly Towers (fan written) review wasn't one of his best, but I actually liked it better than the last Batman video (the annoying "Joker" killed it for me) and only a little less than his Superman reviews.

Maybe I assumed wrong, but I thought James would mostly write the episode, then threw in insults and other one liners written by the fans... not the entire episode written by the fans.

Deadly Towers is one he could have really done a bang up job on, but instead I feel he dropped the ball, and I hope he never does one of these again, or he cleans it up a bit and doesn't have 2 minutes of insults for no reason at all.

I enjoy the AVGN more when he's criticizing a games flaws and the anger that erupts from that... but this felt forced, I don't feel he showed us enough to really give us 2 minutes of straight insults, on top of the 1:20 intro, the 30 second ending... blah.

Like someone wrote earlier, it was like the AVGN mocking himself in a video, rather than just the AVGN doing a video himself. This is probably the first AVGN video since he's started releasing them that I won't ever go back and rewatch, which is a damn shame as I have fond memories of Deadly Towers and have been dying for him to review it for a long time.

Maybe one day he will go back and give it a proper review... like someone else also wrote, I too just fast forwarded the video at around the 6 minute mark.

I thought the last Batman video was great though... the guy captured the feel of the 60's Joker from the campy Batman show, and the fight scene at the end was pretty well done, not to mention I enjoyed the reviews too. Usually I can't stand when he has guest stars and little "bits", but this one I enjoyed a lot. It seems most people who felt the Joker was annoying hasn't seen the old tv show in awhile.

yup, the big part of the game was knowing which tower to go to first to get the best armour/powerups. once you have the second best sword and at least the double shot the game becomes more bareable. also to note if you use the password cheat (die at the very very very beginning of the game and then change the first two letters of your password to EF you start with all the best equipment) you can then play around and see how well made the game really is.

Regarding the fan episode I think it sucks on purpose. I'm sure he gets lots of terrible lines sent in, maybe showing how they obviously don't work will reduce that a bit.

I think this is one of his better videos. He's not calling the game bad, because he obviously likes it! He's just dissecting what's wrong with the two player mode and showing honest to goodness examples while doing so.

I didn't like the dumb dramatic moment at the start, though. :P

I've become a fan of the AVGN as of late. Although I will admit that his very first choice for a review of Castlevania 2 got on my bad side, he has steadily evolved into a fantastic entertainer. The Battletoads episode was a damn good twist, and if he keeps delivering original and/or hilarious examinations like these... well, I guess I'd watch them? ^^;

Since I consider the Nerd having jumped the shark with his Deadly Towers review, I wanted to give a list on which episodes I believe are the best in order. I go to bed every night with AVGN episodes looping playing all night so its just not something I having done my homework on.

1. The Wizard/SMB3

This episode had everything that showed why the Nerd was so great. It was entertaining,informative and hilarious.

2.Ghostbusters Parts 1,2,3

You could tell he was a huge Ghostbusters fan as a child that was so disapointed by amount of shitty ghostbusters games. Probably the funniest of all the nerd episodes

3.Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

He pointed out all the things about this game that we hated. His most globally popular video

4.Nintendo Power
Could be some people's number 1 and rightly so but I believe the other 3 mentioned were better for the Nerd Charcter but this was a fun episode that was well produced.

5.The Power Glove
Another great episode, it should be in anybody's top 5

6.Simons Quest
I still agree with the Nerd about this game and all his crtiques he made despite alot of people saying he is wrong. I mean cmon, who would know to crouch?

7.Virtual Boy
One of the last great nerd game reviews

8.Festers Quest
Probably the funniest skit in all nerd history was in this episode

The Nerds anger was at full blast in this game, We didnt see this quit amount of flat out anger again until the Wizard of Oz review

41. Independance Day- Yeah this is a shitty game and I guess he reviewed it because it was the 4th of July, but there were many other PS games he could have reviewed that more people knew about that were alot worse.

42.The Nerd and Captain S- I could give 2 shits about Captain S and this episode meant to be some sort of crossover but turned out to be lame and unfunny and longer than it should have been.

43.Atari 5200- While it was nice finding more about this system, the whole schtick about the power adapter got old after spending 5 minutes on it.

44. Colecovision and Intellivision- Most of us are from the NES generation, and so is the nerd, so why doesnt he actually review systems that we grew up wanting play such as the 3DO,CDI or Jaguar. I just didnt give a shit about these two systems because their old and have no appeal with them having shittier graphic than the NES.

45. Superman- While it was an decent episode, he should have just spent more time on Superman64 and skipped this game alltogether.

46.Star Trek- Him ragging on Star Trek for the NES(One of my fav games as a child) showed that he was starting to run out of ideas. It was funny that he made fun of the fact of the extensive puzzle solving, but Star Trek wasnt a shitty game like he was trying to say.

47. Batman Part 1 - The Nerd started to get flat out annoying in this episode

48.Superman64- What should have been a good review turned out to be shit. It seemed rush and unispired,

49. Batman Part 2 - The Joker(Imma make you play shitty games Batman!!!!) got on my nerves and proved the Nerd is just reusing old gags.


50.Deadly Towers- The Nerd getting other people to review a game and it turned out to be a huge mistake. The Episode sucked and is clearly the worst Nerd episode to date and I mean by alot.

When I was at PAX a couple of weekends ago I had two customers at my booth who didn't know each other. One looked at the other and said "do you watch the angry video game nerd?" He gave him some kind of head nod and then they high-fived while one of them said "for the win!" I have never seen anything so nerdy in my whole life. Totally awesome! Probably one of the top ten moments in my life that I wish I had a video camera rolling.

Have you looked at the rest of his work? Don't answer cause you'd probably took one glimpse and made up your mind already on the spot without giving a second thought. Sure, subject matter isn't everyone's cup of tea, but that's no reason to say he's talentless.

His art style and storytelling is above par than the thousands of drawings and comics I've seen on the internet over the years. His drawings has rich detail yet doesn't compromise the overall simplicity of the subject. He adds depth and characters incurring deep and methodical relations and interactions creating storylines that are intriguing and easy to follow. At least, that's what I see.

I fail to see how bashing this comic is relevant to the thread. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions on what they like and what they do not. It started out topical by featuring a depiction of the AVGN, but now this tangent is sailing toward dark skies. Let's drop this subject and get back to focus.

So, James' reviews of all six of the Rocky movies really motivated me to see all of them, and I did just that. It's ironic that the Rocky game for the SMS bites. It's too bad he didn't get past Clubber Lang, because I'd LOVE to have seen a reaction to the third training stage: See, in the third stage, you're punching pads held by Mickey, who... eh, it may be silly to institute a spoiler warning for a film that's about twenty years old, but regardless, SPOILER: Mickey dies in Rocky III, yet you train with him before going on to fight Ivan Drago of Rocky IV. I would have loved to seen James flip his proverbial shit over this inconsistency. LOL
