I'm very impressed that he got such decent shots of the games in action!
Didn't realize that you could look into one mono-visual-channel of the Virtual Boy and get full images of what was going on.

angry video game nerd is a pretty entertaining gimmick. however, there are two things i dislike about his videos, and only one is his fault:
1) he tends to overdo it with the swearing. i get it, you're angry, but i think saying "fuck" every 3 words detracts from the humor
2) he has inspired every pathetic geek in the universe to try and duplicate his schtick. the big problem with that is that 99% of them are godawful.

although i'm not generally a big user of the art of swearing nor do i get much of a giggle when i do hear it used i don't have a problem with the AVG nerd swearing as much as he does. if hes going to be angry i suppose he may as well be over the top. also adds a bit to his feelings of frusteration with some of these games which i can definatly relate to

as i said, only one of my qualms about the angry nintendo (or now i guess "video game") nerd is really his fault.
the video game nerd imitators are THE WORST. it really gets at me when you see some video of some geek, who isn't pretending to be a geek, drones on in a monotone voice inspersed with failed attempts at humor and edginess. it's kind of like watching the obese, acne ridden girl in high school say she hopes to someday be a model.
again, the angry nintendo/video game nerd is quality...just not all the wannabes

I love the virtual boy, I find the gimmicky 3d effects to be entertaining, playing VB in the dark is quite cool. I just got my complete waterworld in the mail today, cant wait to play it and see just how bad it is.

I watched the video yesterday and enjoyed it. Almost makes me want to hunt down a Virtual Boy for Wario Land (which is definitely the best game on the system), Vertical Force, and Galatic Pinball.

Why not? His writing is excellent and every video is very entertaining in its own way. That's like saying MST3K shouldn't have worked for 11 years because all they did was watch crappy movies and make fun of them.

Actually, I think AVGN's videos have gotten better. They're not as funny, but he reviews the games more seriously.
I agree with everyone else that it's a shame he's inspired so many lame ripoffs, but that's the way it always works.

I agree the rip-offs suck but..I don't mind the hault in attempting to be funny, just his reviews on games and his honest opinion can be funny enough. I laughed quite a bit at this VB video because it's so true!

I checked out the Rambo video--it's pretty good too.
I've watched him for awhile just because I like hearing his commentary on the games themselves--never much cared for the swearing and such (although I did chuckle when he beat up Bugs Bunny). I think his approach is changing a bit. The swearing's still there, but his videos are more like a conversation/explanation than a vehicle to move poo jokes. It's like he's *gasp* reviewing the games. And he says some positive things. He gives the games credit where credit is due, which indicates to me that he thinks about what he says. And, unlike the Irate Gamer (who is gawdawful, imo) he doesn't give us false info and claim to be the expert.

Perhaps it is too late in the game now, with so many threads about the guy, but I always thought it'd make more sense to have a single thread for him and update/bump it as he posts a new review. Something like "The Angry Video Game Nerd Review Thread." He isn't important enough to warrant an entirely new thread every time he posts some new video.

While there are currently, and have been in the past, discussion threads about this Irate Gamer ... I ALWAYS have to ask people who think he's good if not better : how the hell can you watch something that - no, not like your description describes, not a "tad" but BLATANTLY, SHAMELESSLY rips off every single thing that AVGN does.
Everything from his "name" to his theme song, right down to the room that he stands in ... I mean, doesn't that strike you as a wee bit, I don't know ... pathetic?
It's pretty obvious that he loves what James was doing so much so, that he's hoping to catch unsuspecting viewers that have never seen the AVGN's "shtick" and trick them into thinking that he was the originator.
There's really nothing more shameless than stealing material from another performer.

I'm glad he didn't bash the virtual boy a whole lot. It isn't that bad, really. But the "it DOES look like shit" part made me laugh. It almost looked like it was really in that movie!

I liked the Virtual Boy review but was a little disappointed that he didn't find someone with a copy of Jack Bros. to send to him to include in the review as I'm pretty sure with the amount of fans he has that he could do throw out a message online and find someone with the game to send him.

the game nerd released a halloween video last year when i had that video on one of his youtube account responses. i made a fake america vs england video, where i was a pretend british guy, he hated it and removed my game nerd parody video off his responses. but in the halloween video he thumbs through his atari collection and sees ET and makes a "hell no!face". guess he thought i was british. CONFYUZING!

i tell ya.. i bought his AVGN Volume 1 DVD Set and its funny as hell. My girlfriend and I watched the Virtual Boy Review and i thought he wasn't angry enof for it but hey. I said something like i wanted to own a VB. James says something like "may cause seizures and headaches" and my girlfriend was like... "if you want seizures and headaches, I just buy a 2x4 from Lowe's, and hit you in the head with the 2x4! That will save you some money!" We were both LOLing at that point!

He MIGHT own the whole VB library OR he may have had it loaned to him by a Virtual Boy collector for the purpose of the review, I believe he's done that kind of thing before.

LOL, oh man ... he's really got it down to a science now.
It's a perfect balance of in-depth reviews of awful games AND funny costume/prop/FX gags that never seem to go on too long or get too self-indulgent.
And as far as the people questioning all the vulgarity and scatological humor ... have you NOT either followed AVGN's reviews since the beginning and/or watched them all from his archives?
It's not like he started out calm and sanitary and degenerated into this ... he's been using terms like "assload of fuck" since the beginning, and has been using FX "crap shots" for at least year now.

I get where you're coming from - it's definitely not for everybody.
But, again, if you're familiar with his catalog of work (especially the non-AVGN movies he's done) you'll know he's a big fan of old-school "splatter" effects shots ... obviously NOT limited to blood and guts. ;)

To be honest I think the Angry Nintendo Nerd goes through phases. His earily video's were really funny, and didn't really need any extra goods to make them classics. His second phase seems to be using characters and special effects more. They were funny, but not like the originals. Lately, he seems to be going for more serious reviews, while still using the above tactics. Don't get me wrong I really enjoy his video's, yet wish he would return to his roots per say. I do look forward to new video's on a semiweekly basis. O_o

And to be completely honest, Virtual Boy came out during a weird transitional period. Maybe if Nintendo released more titles for it, it would have went over well. I enjoy the VB, and pull it out time to time and play (well as long as my eyes don't hurt) O_o

Edit: After watching the video I have to say I'm pretty disappointed with how he presented the Intellivision. He made it seem like the whole system was crap and totally ignored some of the best games on the there. I'm certainly not looking forward to his next one.

Damn straight SNAFU is a good game. Great review overall. I actually wish it were longer because as much as I like the Intellivision, there's a lot of crappy games to laugh at.
I noticed he was reading the How to Win at Nintendo games books by Jeff Rovin in the intro. I wonder if he'll ever rip those.

People don't tune in to hear James gush about how great the good games for a system are, unlike The Incredible Hulk ... most people LIKE him when he's angry ... and tearing games new assholes.
