I found some rare C64 cart that Joe had trouble finding and Joe asked me to win it for him, so I set the snipe and sniped it. Well KB ended up as the high bidder at the time my snipe went through and I guess he was pissed. He went on to bid on every single item I had bids at the time as some type of territoral pissing fit.

I'd dealt with him many times in private sales where I sent KB BIG money so I was very puzzled by all this over a cheap C64 cart and I emailed him with a wtf? He never replied.

Nes: The posters on this site are to blame for those prices that jollerancher puts out. When he started that thread, many people were proclaiming the finds to be "the greatest ever" "rarest of the rare", etc, and most of the people saying how much money he could get for something don't even COLLECT these sort of items. You give that hype and rarity to someone not in our world, and the sky's the limit.

Now, you can't blame the guy for doing it repeatedly because he received $10,000 from a guy desperate for that Powerfest SNES cart. No one would have paid more than $4,000 for it, I'm not sure HE evern knew that, but when you have the "only" copy, you can pretty much name your price or keep it. If you notice, the prices are going down, albeit slowly, but surely.Also, couple the fact someone bought that Earthbound, the Zelda III, and other stuff, then you realize he has a market here. I've never even sold stuff this high in my life, and I've got some pretty rare items (sans NWC)

Notice that the owners who purchased his items sans Niels in the Netherlands have all sold or attempted to sell said items after immediately purchasing them. WHAT WAS THE POINT OF BUYING THEM THEN??????

It would be nice if he would do a no reserve auction so we can have something to look forward to, and see what the hell someone is willing to pay for it.

Well, sniping is quite annoying. EBay should have a feature where a seller can have their auction automatically ended a random amount of hours before the scheduled end of auction so sniping can't happen.

I doubt many sellers are going to prevent themselves from getting some extra money in the last few minutes of an auction

Afaik, the seller can end the auction at the leading amout at any time. An auction site over here has a "anti-sniping" system. If you bid withing the last 5 min, i.e when its 1 min left, it will automaticly go upto 5 minutes again. Can be good if your're a seller or misses the auction by a minute, but someone have placed a bid and its still 5 minutes to go. And it can also be very annoying if you and another (or several of people) are bidding against eachother at the end.

Although, technically, that's not annoying, that's called an 'auction'. Going once, twice, sold... That's how EVERY auction I've ever participated in has worked until eBay came along... :) The whole point of an auction is for the seller to get the best price possible for his item. This isn't possible if the auction is going to suddenly end when there's still the chance someone would bid more for it... (Sure it sucks more for the buyer...)

Two things I love about Yahoo auctions: The above auto-extending auctions, and that a seller can _NOT_ end an auction early unless he pays an extra fee for that 'feature' when listing the auction (which few people do). So you don't have worry about some sleeze-bag making a behind-the-scenes offer (often low-balling the seller) and having the auction suddenly be cancelled and the seller saying the item is no longer available.

It's not actually legal to own dev kits. Selling them on ebay is technically fencing stolen property. Even dev companies don't own the kits, they lease them. So if the company doesn't give them back at the end of the lease, they're technically stolen.

What about test systems that were liquidated publically through the Acclaim bankruptcy sale?

I wrote something up on that a while ago, but basically those are illegal too. The manufacturers (MS, Sony, Nintendo) allow for the licenses to be transfered to other publishers. Microsoft actually came and took back most of the Xbox equipment from the US (they seem to have let it go for the UK auction). Sony and nintendo, on the other hand entered into an agreement with the auction house to let them sell the kits to other developers on the condition that they had to verify their license. It seems some people then broke their licenses and sold the equipment on ebay. Sony and nintendo never gave up the ownership of the devices, they just transfered the lease, thus the acclaim crap on ebay is stolen merchandise. Not that it's really stopped many people...

I'm talking about the public liquidation, not the eBay auctions. Creditors came in and sold it all. Sony and Nintendo could have intervened and recovered their property when this was going on in NY, but it did not happen, and everything was available and sold. Prime example, Assembler and the gazillion Test Systems he bought? What did he have to verify?

My understanding (from the ex-Atari employee that brought 3 of these types of games, Tronic 2 included, to CGE one year) was that the games never went into full production. He had 'final' production samples that look different to the Ebay auction (and full printed boxes), so it is possible that this is an even earlier sample of this game...
