I'll agree with djbeatmongrel... I was a bit skeptical about picking up this game, but it is really fun. I put about an hour into it tonight. It gets surprisingly addictive trying to find the best way through the levels.

It is a bit overpriced at 800 points though IMO. They should have put in a 3rd level or some sort of multiplayer (on or offline). The way you connect to the scoreboards is also pretty clunky.

Heh, I just got City Connection for a buck last week, and have been playing it frequently over the past few days. As a cheap NES find, it's a decent game once you figure out the jumping controls, but it's hard to recommend at $5. I picked up Dr. Mario Online Rx and Family Ping Pong today ... and, man, I'll say it again ... I have NO idea how Nintendo expects people to have more than two or three of these things on their Wii without doing either of the following:

erasing ALL their VC games

or

moving ALL their VC games onto an SD card for storage

...but back to the games.

Dr. Mario is great. I haven't played the mode where you use the Wiimote pointer ... but the standard mode is full featured and the online matches are fast and furious ... I'm somewhere around 12 wins and 5 losses right now, also it doesn't appear to have any secondary friend code for friend play!! WOO!!

Family Ping Pong plays pretty much like Wii Sports tennis. You don't control the movement of the character, and the direction of the Wiimote swing doesn't really affect the direction of the shot, rather the speed of the the Wiimote swing directs the spin of the ball (left = slow / right = fast /center = medium).

Unlike the Ping Pong "game" in Wii Play, this is actually a Ping Pong game.

Not bad at all for $5 if you plan on playing it with another player...as the CPU is pretty damned easy to beat.

Dr. Mario is great though. Add my standard friend code and PM me with yours if you want to play.

That's weird. I've downloaded LostWinds, TV Show King, Defend Your Castle, and some NES games and still have plenty of room left on my Wii. Maybe you've downloaded a lot of N64 games?

I agree with you though, Nintendo should let us plug USB memory sticks into the back of the Wii for added active storage. What's the problem, Nintendo?

I currently have:

All of the available Wii Channels (except the Mario Kart Channel)
One page of NES/Genesis/TG-16/SNES games (no N64 games, no NeoGeo games)
Three Wii Ware games

and I have 6 blocks left.

When WiiWare was first released, I had 3 pages of VC titles that I deleted down to 1 page worth of stuff...I think that one page of VC games is a average/reasonable amount of purchases/space ... to only be able to fit aprox 3 WiiWare titles on there in addition is pretty dissapointing.

Unless they add USB drive compatability in a firmware upgrade, or create a proprietary storage device.

You have way more VC games than I do, which is a good thing! I have every channel too, but deleted Everybody Votes because it's useless to me. That's why I have plenty of storage left on my Wii.

Really though, what could be the reason Nintendo won't let us plug a USB memory stick into the back of the Wii? If Nintendo is worried about piracy, couldn't it make it so that downloaded games only play on the originating console?

Purchases are tied to consoles and users, and you can already copy out games for storage onto an SD, so I don't think Nintendo is worried about piracy ...

... I'd love for it to be non-proprietary USB sticks ... but I think that if anything, Nintendo is going to create their own storage system ... the Wiispace or the Wiidrive or the Wiigiveusallyourmoneykthanxbye

Whatever the case ... I don't want to have to keep deleting stuff to buy new stuff.

I was rather disappointed to see that Dr. Mario DOES have a separate friend code. (It was the ability to send a limited version of the game to a standard Wii code friend that confused the issue.)

How many game-specific friend codes are we going to have to make threads for???

Neil Koch
05-28-2008, 03:50 PM
Unless Nintendo changes their online strategy (or as some people might say, actually comes up with one) it's going to be a seperate friend code for every online Wii game -- and as long as Wii systems continue to sell like hotcakes, I don't really see them as changing anything.

And I'm in the same boat as some of you in this thread -- my Wii's HD got filled up a long time ago. I do have all my VC and WiiWare games saved on a SD card, so I can just copy from there to the HD, but it gets annoying having to do that everytime I want to play something new (especially for the bigger games which can take several minutes to copy over). Why they don't just let you play stuff directly off of the SD card is still baffling to me.

It means Square has agreed to release the game on the vc. Super Mario Rpg was developed by Square.

There is no release date info for Earthbound yet. Nintendo of America is very secretive when it comes to vc and wiiware release nowdays.

Nintendo of Japan vc release information usually doesn't relate to North America. It is caused by vc games being release in different months.

There is a chance I could be wrong on Earthbound being released before Super Mario Rpg.

I do have a good number of VC games, but it really doesn't take all that many to fill up the Wii's HD.

IIRC, the HD has 2500 blocks, and if you have a few Turbo CD, Neo Geo, or N64 games which run 150-300 blocks each, you could easily fill it up with 10 games or less.

The video of Block Breaker didn't look very good to me. Fishing Master, however, looked pretty fun so I gave it a shot. It has one problem, and that's that they just drop you in without any real help with the controls. You need to do a bit of trial and error, and overcome some frustration figuring out what you're supposed to do. The key to hooking fish is to not jerk up the wiimote too quickly (which isn't intuitive thinking about hooking a biting fish). You need to slowly tilt it up (and then keep it up during the 'hooking' sequence). Once I figured that out my catch % went from 1% to 80%, and now I think the controls are pretty good. Now that I know what I'm doing I'm finding it to be a lot of fun, and worth the $7 if you're in the mood for a low-key fishing game. It's not deep or complex, but it has an addictive "one more fish" quality.
