Actually, I'm not so sure the TG-16 version is superior. It looks bizarre compared to the SMS version (sorry, Dragon-Man just looks retarded in the TG version), and I don't like the music as well. The TG-16 translation is gawdawful as well. "You've been turned into a TOTALLY DISGUSTING CREATURE!" The SMS's color palette is really pretty comparable to the PC Engine's, so there's really no reason to kick yourself for not getting Dragon's Curse. I was kind of disappointed when I dl'ed it.

Actually I am like Dragon's Curse over Wonder Boy III. I have soft spot for the music of the Turbo Grafx 16. Also I feel the control is better on the Turbo Grafx over the SMS. But I am play both these games on original hardware with original equipment for what it worth. The SMS is a quality game but I am feel the Turbo Grafx 16 Dragon Curse is step up over Wonder Boy III.

The SMS is have better cover art however than the Turbo Grafx 16 cover art. I think Turbo Grafx art work is loose everytime.

As a self-avowed Wonder Boy III/Dragon's Curse fanboy, I really can't tell a large difference between the two. I have to agree, though, that the art suffers a mite on the TG-16. And although the music sounds better on the TG-16, I prefer the SMS version (although, if we're talking about the FM music of the SMS version, that easily blows the TG-16's out of the water). As for control, I have trouble with shooting items prematurely with the SMS's mushy pad (doesn't that sound lovely), but playing with a Genesis pad can fix that.

I've never seen the TG-16 cover art, but there's no way it can be worse than the SMS cover art. Trust me. :P

There better be a n64 game released on the vc by the end of July. This week is not great in vc games overall including nes golf. All I have to say about next week is there better 2 decent or great games next week with China Warrior being released on next monday.

Blazing Lazers, and a Bonk game are necessities.

I'd also include Military Madness, one of the best turnbased strategy titles for consoles. The first release was a little buggy, but they fixed it by now.

Blazing Lasers is a must, I'd agree and don't forget Soldier Blade.. the best looking TG16 shmup.

Hudson has announced 5 games for the tg-16 for July. http://vc-pce.com/usa/e/index.html is the source. That site is owned and maintained by Hudson themselves.

They are in this order:
Dragon Spirit
Air Zonk
Silent Debuggers
Devil's Crush
Drop Off

Dragon Spirit is a good shooter that I own. It is an arcade port of the games. It is a hard game at some parts of the game.

I heard that Air Zonk is a very good Shooter that has Bonk as a Cyborg.

Silent Debuggers is an early fps game based on what I read.

Devil's Crush is one best video game pinball game out there and I own it. It is a must have anyone who like pinball games.

I don't know much about the last game for July except for the fact is a puzzle game based on what I read about it.

I picked up Dragon Spirit the other day. It's one of those games I always wanted back in the day, due to magazine screen shots. But I didn't have my Turbo long enough to get it. Pretty solid little shooter with a unique theme. I like the slower (read: capable of being enjoyed by mortals) pace.

Well, I finally decided to buy and download my very first VC game and it was Paper Mario (although I still debate whether or not to to get Actraiser, since I have the actual game for the SNES but this would be convenient for me since my original SNES is having audio issues lately..plus I have always loved the game). I played the game back when it first came out andthought it was meh. A few years later, Paper Mario gets a sequel on the GC and I really enjoyed it so I figured let me give it a spin again. Time helped! I am actually enjoying this as much as TTYD. Some say its a little better than TTYD because there are more locales and enemies from the SMB universe so I will see as the game progresses.

It is the Tg-16 version. The Genesis version is called Dragon's Fury.

The Genesis version did not a have good chance of being released. The Developer of the genesis version was bought by a Pachinko company and was folded into the Pachinko company's R&D. The developer was Technosoft the same developer that was responsible for the Thunder Force series. I think that Technoft had more rights to the game then the Publisher Tengren did.

Interesting heads up for you all: Nintendo is apparently back in the censoring business. Downloaded Devil's Crush today. The game is devoid of pentagrams. I know that the giant star at the top of the playfield was never a 5-pointed star in the TG-16 version, but the stars over the kick-holes were. The sprites have been altered so that only one of the intersecting triangles is visible at any time, so the pentagrams have been turned into rotating triangles.

Why? I don't get it. The game's called fucking Devil's Crush. You think people aren't going to infer all the references to satanism what with a circle of druids running around a giant star in the top of the playfield? The game is far from ruined (it's actually emulated pretty seamlessly!) but this censoring stuff is bullshit. The art is compromised. Be warned.

Does anyone have any screenshots to post? I'm kinda curious to see what was done. And, yeah, pretty fuckin' lame. Are we still in the 1980's, with right-wing fundamentalist witch hunts against rock? And why is Nintendo still fearful of offending America's extremist right?

The thing I don't get? Japanese developers usually just stick in whatever they see as "religious" polygon symbols, and invariably, instead of pentagrams, they end up using the Jewish Star of David. I never understood why that wasn't considered offensive by anyone, since obviously there are real connotations. But I remind myself that it's all foreign to the Japanese; they're just grabbing Western icons without any real idea of what they mean.

Don't play those heavy metal records backwards! You'll hear evil messages! And then you'll want to have sex with your girlfirends! Or, worse, you won't send Rev Fallwell yer money! And then who's gonna defend racial segregation?! Nobody!

You know, the more I think about it the more in league this censorship seems to be with nintendo's original "decency" policy from the NES days. NoA never allowed religious iconography in their games, and apparently they still stand by this (although I can't understand a contemporary Castlevania without crosses in it. I don't remember seeing any in Dawn of Sorrows, but it's been awhile since I played it.) And, being objective, the star of David (which WAS the sprite in the original Devil's Crush) is a religious icon. I suppose if they're not going to allow crosses, it would be hippocritical of them to allow a Star of David.

Interestingly enough, several of my best friends in Seattle spent years working at Nintendo of America doing testing and debugging (a thankless, shitty job--just in case nybody might think that would be fun. And if you think it's a springboard to get into the industry, think again. You're more likely to end up int he unemployment line after your 6 months are up.) Anyway, I was told that when 1080 Avalanche for the Gamecube first came out of the studios (it was developed by a local team in Redmond, I think) it was loaded with crosses. The developers would put them in sneaky locations, like on the bottom of characters' snowboards. Most of the testers there weren't particularly bothered by this kind of thing exept for this one goth chick, apparently. She took it upon herself to find all the crosses and Christianity-related imagery in every game she played and then would make a big stink to management about it. My friend's cubicle was next to her, and all day she'd be muttering "Got you, motherfucker! You can't hide from me you fucking bastard!" sounded pretty funny to me :)

Okay, so, censorship discussion notwithstanding, can I just say that Kirby's Dream Course was, like, my number one hope for the VC when the feature was first announced for the Wii? I NEVER thought that was coming out. I love that game, and on a console that very much caters to multi-play, I was hoping for some fun two player action.

I haven't bought a VC game since Bomberman '95 was released, but I'll be damned if they didn't get me this time. Well played, Nintendo.

Star soldier is part of the soldier series by Hudson. I own the game. I didn't consider Star sholdier be one of best shmup for the nes and that is without counting the tg-16 and the genesis. This is the 3rd game of the series released in the states with the other 2 being Super Star Soldier, and Soldier Blade.

Dynamite Headdy is another great game by treasure.

Drop off is a breakout or pong style of a game by what I saw of its gameplay on youtube. It is supposely not one of the better Breakout style games out there and has limited appeal as a result.

The video for drop off is found on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jL0kJadXdRk

Dynamite Headdy is the best game among this week's additions.

Star Soldier was actually a pretty decent shmup for an early NES release. But the NES cart is pretty easy to find for under the $5 asking price (I got my copy for $2.50), and it's also hard to recommend over several of the TG-16 shmups available, including Super Star Soldier.

Graham Mitchell

I think Hudson is trying to resurrect Star Soldier for some reason. The theme from the NES game is one of the BGM selections you can earn in Kororinpa: Marble Mania.

I actually really like Star Soldier, but it's absolutely unplayable without a rapid fire controller. If you've got got one, more power to ya, but I don't know think the VC supports rapid fire on NES games, does it? It does with TG-16 titles, but I'm not sure about NES.

nintendo needs to release 10 games a week.

I agree there should be more vc games released a week, but it should 4 or 5 games in North America. The true complaining should be happening in Europe do the fact they only get 2 games a week lately despite the fact it is easy to translated North America games to Europe. Tg-16 had 3 or 4 games imported to europe. That means nintendo should do the same thing since Europe gets the least amount of games in every video game era since the nes was released at least.

Nintendo shouldn't release 10 games in North America on the vc in a week for 2 reasons Nintendo would run out of great games for the nes, snes, or the n64 after 3 years. The problem with having that amount of games a week is north America does not get the amount of games like Japan does.

The 2nd thing is games that are not well known wouldn't be bought because of the amount games that would released in a week. Having 10 games a week means there would be more popular games a week. People have problems the way it is to give a little known game a chance because they think if a game is not popular it stinks! That logic is flawed because it is not always the case. Games don't sell well because of when the game was released in a game consoles life or the game developer did a bad job of advertising the game.

The chances are not good for that game being released till late November or December for the Virtual game console. It is not going to happen in August. Whatever n64 vc game the Japan gets, rest the world gets on the n64 part of the vc also. It may not happen in the same month though as Japan for get a n64 virtual game console game.

Wave race 64 will be released in North America in August or September of this year. Nintendo should be releasing Metroid the same week or the week prior to Metroid Prime 3 being Released in North America. Super Smash Brothers should be released on the vc a week before or the same week Super Smash Bros. Brawl will be released for the wii.

It's a good week for vc games.

Adventures of Lolo finally came to North America on the vc after being released in Europe June 8th on the vc.

Wave Race 64 was a launch game for the n64 and should be the last vc n64 games to be released in North America in for a couple months. There is no n64 to be released in Japan this month, and usually Japan gets a n64 vc game a month before North America.

This weeks games:

Metroid
Shining in the Darkness
Cratermaze

http://press.nintendo.com/articles.jsp?id=13170

We all knew about Metroid and Cratermaze after Friday with Metroid being mentioned by nintendo and Cratermaze given a date by Hudson on Friday also.

Shining in the Darkness is a good Dungeon Crawl rpg for the genesis.

Does Metroid still use a password system for "saving" your progress? If they do, it seems kind of silly (and lazy on Nintendo's part). Regardless, I've been waiting for this one on VC. $5 to play Metroid on the Wii is still better than hooking up the old toaster (on a LCD TV no less).

Most VC can be paused and come back to exactly where you left off via the home menu.

Metroid appears to be the same way. Great system they have there.

RPG fans who haven't tried Shining in the Darkness really should. That game does things from a graphics standpoint that I didn't know were possible on the Genesis (scaling and rotation of the castles/towns on the map screen). Great game!

Here's my obligatory review on the week: it's a good one. Nothing I'd get if I had a Wii, though - I already have Shining In The Darkness and Metroid.

Super Mario RPG was a joint effort between Nintendo and Square, so unless both companies work out a deal to get it on the Virtual Console, I don't think we'll be seeing it any time soon. I wouldn't completely rule out the possibility of seeing it on the VC someday, though.
