Well, it seems to have been released on the Japanese Virtual Console, so there's hope I guess.

And Nintendo Power has confirmed it as an upcoming release, too.

I guess the delay can be linked to the fact that they need to translate the game. Sure there's a fan-translation out there, but none official.

How critical is the text to enjoying the game? I don't believe we've had a Virtual Console import yet that was actually translated and not just left intact.

Correct. They didn't translate any of the previous imports, sans the one page instruction manual.

I just learned of the upcoming Monster World IV Virtual Console and PSN release today, and Sega has indeed confirmed that it will be fully localized. This is absolutely fantastic news. :D No, the text isn't that critical to playing through the game; it's more action-based and straightforward than the previous Wonder Boy games which aren't even hard to play in Japanese themselves. Well, besides the Sphinx riddles in each of the games. Those are a pain without being able to read them. But whether it needs a translation or not to be enjoyed, how wonderful that the game will finally be available in the US with an official English localization for the first time after 17 years. I hope many, many gamers will be introduced to this lovely, magical game. The Wonder Boy series has been getting some excellent treatment these last few years, what with the PS2 collection, the Virtual Console release of Dynastic Hero (making the game available officially in English without having to pay something like 500 freakin' dollars), and now Monster World IV. You've done good in my book, Sega. :)

I just noticed that Japan has had the 1st arcade accurate home version of Super Hang-On available on their Virtual Console for quite a while now.

I hope Sega brings it over stateside eventually since it's even better than the nice GBA port of it (And blows away the old, sluggish, Genesis port of it that most of us are familiar with).

I had been kind of thinking this gets a bit confusing. Shouldn't the 3DS have its own update list and instead of saying Wii the titles should say whether they are Genesis, SNES, NES originals etc.?

Or are you not actually firing up the consoles and just copying whatever the website says?

JSoup
09-11-2011, 09:50 PM
I didn't really see the need to make another Virtual Console topic when this one works just fine (a simple editing of the topic title would work as well), but whatever you guys want works for me.

I'm only noting which systems VC each game is for to keep this from getting confusing, although I can see how this can make things further confusing.

I had been kind of thinking this gets a bit confusing. Shouldn't the 3DS have its own update list and instead of saying Wii the titles should say whether they are Genesis, SNES, NES originals etc.?

I also haven't been particularly crazy about the format.

I don't see a need for two threads, but why not do it like this?

Wii - Super Mario World (SuperNes)
Wii - Mega Man 9 (WiiWare)
DS - The Oregon Trail (DSiWare)
3DS - Mega Man: Dr. Wily’s Revenge (Game Boy)
3DS - Excitebike (3D Classics)
3DS - Let's Golf 3D (eShop)

Basically, consistency between the two instead of listing them two different ways, and leave no doubt just what sort of release it actually is. The current way can easily leave someone unsure of just what type of release is being mentioned.

This weeks Virtual Console releases are as follows:

Mega Man 5
Donkey Kong (GB)

Nintendo's press page is being way less descriptive about download releases now.

It's not particularly clear here just what Mega Man 5 is. Is it a Wii Virtual Console release (Which it was), is it a Virtual Console NES release for the 3DS, is it a 3D Classics version of Mega Man 5 for the 3DS, etc.

I think the easiest way of all would be to mirror the PS1 classics on PSN thread (that I've been too lazy to update) and re-edit the first post each time to include every single game released in order of release, and organize it your way. That would be a way to get it more organized later on. That or someone just makes a list topic to partner all of these threads into one.

It's clear if you've noted the format I started using. It it's a normal VC Wii game, there is nothing after the title of the game. NES on 3DS says (3DS) after it, 3D Classics say (3D Classics), 3DS VC releases say (GB) as all #DS VC releases that aren't one of the previous two are gameboy games (currently, anyway).

However, I do like the idea of either just editing the first post or just making a combination thread. Sadly, the topic creator for this thread hasn't been around in a while, so a new thread will need to be in order.

I understand it, but there's no harm it making it 100% obvious, either. The current way leaves room for a bit of confusion and is easily rectified, I think.

I like the idea as well. Keep a master list in alphabetical order for each relevant platform included on the Virtual Console service (Or by release date if you wanted to go that way). And at the top of that post above the list, show that week's latest releases. I wouldn't mind doing it both ways. Keep a master list and latest update in post 1, yet still add on a post to the thread each week to hopefully encourage some participation and discussion about that week's games.

Maybe an administrator could give you editing privileges to the 1st post of the thread. Worth asking about to keep things all in one place and it doesn't seem out of line if the forum software permits it since you're the one that's taken it upon himself to keep the forum updated regularly (itobandito, the thread creator, hasn't even logged into the forum for 10 months now, so it's not like you'd be hijacking his thread).

Wouldn't it make even more sense to use something like Google docs spreadsheets to store the master list, and just post the additions here?

That way you've got your list in a public, sortable format, but for those who just want to see what's new they still have their quick hit fix here?
