Is there an easily-accessible list of VC games online somewhere?
-^Cro§Bow^-
01-08-2007, 08:45 PM
No..Dungeon Explorer just came online today. It was online in the UK last week, and Japan has had it for some time. But this afternoon was the first time Dungeon Explorer has finally shown up. And yes...on my Wii, it was also not listed as a new title. My thought is that it was supposed to have been released on the US servers sometime ago, and perhaps was an oversight?
I'm betting these games are sitting on a server with a flag to make them available or not and all that is needed is for whoever controls it to simply have the game suddenly appear to us. In any event..the VC games today were:
Gradius for NES
Soldier Blade for TG-16
and
Dungeon Explorer for TG-16.
I have exactly 600 points left and Dungeon Explorer will likely get those...

Supposedly, there was a bug in the emulation. So NoA decided to hold off a week.

I've been writing VC reviews each week at my games blog, Videogames of the Damned. This week's games are up, and you're free to stop by and read my humble opinions. Virtual Console always goes through this good week/bad week cycle, and this week happens to be the "bad" week. At least we got R-Type 3, instead of Super R-Type. That would have just been painful.
Here's the short version of my reviews this week, and all the other VC games. Again, you can read everything at my blog, so send your hate mail over there.
January 15, 2007:
Xevious - Bandai for NES - 5/10
Moto Roader - Hudson for Turbografx - 4/10
R-Type 3 - Irem for Super NES - 8/10
And here are the "short" archives:
NES:
Baseball - 2
Donkey Kong - 5
Donkey Kong Jr. - 5
Gradius - 7
Ice Hockey - 8
Legend of Zelda - 10 (duh)
Mario Bros - 5
Pinball - 3
Soccer - 2
Solomon's Key - 7
Super Mario Bros - 10 (duh)
Tennis - 2
Urban Champion - 3
Wario Woods - 5
Super NES:
Castlevania 4 - 9
F-Zero - 8
Sim City - 9
Street Fighter 2 - 9
Turbografx-16:
Alien Crush - 7
Bomberman '93 - 7
Bonk's Adventure - 7
Dungeon Explorer - 8
Military Madness - 6
R-Type - 9
Soldier Blade - 8
Super Star Soldier - 9
Victory Road - 5
Genesis:
Altered Beast - 3
Columns - 5
Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine - 7
Ecco the Dolphin - 10
Golden Axe - 7
Gunstar Heroes - 10
Ristar - 6
Sonic the Hedgehog - 10
Space Harrier 2 - 6
Toejam & Earl - 10
Nintendo 64:
Super Mario 64 - 10

Is it R-Type 3 or Super R-Type? Super R-Type sucked ass with all the slowdown.

I don't see how Japan is getting all the good games. We've been getting the exact same ones, only a few weeks later. If anything Japan is a good indicator as to what's coming for VC for us.

Hey, I'm just curious and maybe you guys know the reason behind this and can elighten me about it. I have no interest in purchasing any VC games (unless they were like $1.99 or something), but I did go to the VC area to check out the games and how they have it setup, and I also went there to play some free demo's of the games, but there was only 1 problem....
NO FREE DEMOS!!!!
What's up with that? Both Sony and Microsoft offer free demos of their various games, and I thought that it would be standard practice to offer free demos? Sure I would expect them to be very brief, like 1 level, or maybe a timed game or something, but I figured they would have some kind of basic demo for you to be able to sample the game briefly before purchase. I'm also kinda suprised that there aren't any demos of actual Wii games either. It probably has to do with the built in storage in the Wii. Not enough space for demo's of real Wii games. But I'm thinking that if they offered demo's of real Wii games, more people would go out and acquire SD cards, and that would in turn inspire many more people to purchase VC games.

What? Whaddya mean yer not visiting the blog? My opinions are pushing your buttons. That's the perfect reason to visit a blog. :)
Seriously, though, I'm not out for anything more than my own opinions. I think I wrote that my thoughts on Ecco were influenced by the fact that it was the subject of my first published review. I just have a lot of good memories with that game, staying overnight at the girlfriend's house, yadda yadda.
Someone else asked the difference between the different R-Type's. R-Type (the original) was an arcade game that also appeared on Sega Master System and TG-16. Two more sequels appeared in arcades but never arrived in the home. Super R-Type was an early Super NES shooter that looked good, but was plagued with slowdown. R-Type 3 appeared on Super NES around '92, and was much better. Whew!
So, if you like shooters, R-Type and R-Type 3 are good choices for VC.

playing games off SD card would be painfully slow.... it might be alright for some of the VC games, but a real honest to goodness wii game would run like shit. way to slow. you really need some kind of fast access rates to play these games, like from optical or hard drives. personally im glad nintendo finally realized theres an internet. free demos a few console generations away for nintendo to catch up to lol.
for the record: i own a wii and 360

Ahh, I didn't know that. So that explains the lack of actual Wii game demo's, but there should still be some VC demo's for the games. Just 1 level of the game or a timed demo that lasts 5 minutes would be sufficient. I also hope that Nintendo comes out with a little external hard drive for it, so maybe they can offer full fledged demo's of actual Wii games. I'm so used to trying demo's out on the 360 and PS3 that it just seems strange to not have them at all.

There are more games. According to Sega's site, three new Genesis games are being released today. Gain Ground, Comix Zone, and Bonanza Bros.
Nintendo hasn't updated their page, only listing Zelda 3. But we've known about Sega for a couple weeks now, and unless someone reports differently from actual Wii surfing, I'll assume that it's four games this week.

Only Zelda:Link to the past was posted today. I just checked the Wii store and that is the only new VC game available as of right now. So if Sega was planning to release any...then I suspect they released them to Nintendo and it is up to Nintendo to decide when they go up on the VC store.

You know, in light of all the TG16 resurrection, the question is begged: Will they bother finding some way of porting TGCD's and SuperCD's to the Wii Console? I know the red book audio causes some problems for that in general, it could be done. If XBoxLive is getting Symphony of the Night, I'm sure somebody could get Rondo of Blood or Ys Book I and II ported over somehow. Or How about Snatcher--the Sega CD version is ported to English with some of the best voice acting ever in a game at that time. Wouldn't it be great to play this stuff on a wii? I hope they find it profitable to go through with some of these ideas. I think there'd be a good response.
How about SMS games, also? Will we wever see Phantasy Star, Zillion, or Spellcaster on the Wii?

Good question. At some point, more consoles will have to be added to VC, and there's no reason, really, why all the classic consoles (pre-Playstation) can't be easily made available. The emulators are all stable and working fine. The biggest question would likely be the issue of rights, and how to handle content from companies that are gone.
I'd want to see SMS added, if only for Phantasy Star and Golvellius. I'd also demand 2600, 7800, Atari 800 computer (for 4-player MULE, of course!), Sega CD, Turbo CD, and maybe even Saturn.
I wonder what's happened to Sega's VC titles this week. Has there been any news regarding them? It's weird.

When I made that comment, I had forgotten that there are parental settings in-console for the Wii store. I was thinking "How will Nintendo, who is so concerned about our children's impressionable minds that they thought up that infuriating friend code system, reconcile the fact that little Billy can buy Snatcher from the comfort of his living room, and there won't be a conscientious gamestop employee there to SAVE him from it?"
I realize that there have been M games on Nintendo systems before, but there hasn't been anything that couldn't be rated at least K-A on the virtual console yet.

Today Nintendo adds three new classic games to the popular Wii™ video game system's Wii Shop Channel. The games go live at 9 a.m. Pacific time. Nintendo adds new games to the channel every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:
Super Mario World™ (Super NES®, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points): During a vacation in Dinosaur Land, Princess Toadstool gets kidnapped and a spell is cast on the inhabitants of the island. When they stumble upon Yoshi™, a young dinosaur, Mario™ and Luigi learn that Bowser is responsible for the terrible misdeeds. Now, all Yoshis are trapped in magical eggs that Bowser has hidden throughout seven castles. Many hidden paths aid Mario in making his way to Bowser's castle, completing 74 areas and finding all 96 exits. Discover items, including a feather that gives Mario a cape that allows him to fly, or a flower that shoots fireballs in layers upon layers of 2-D scrolling landscapes. Players can even ride Yoshi and swallow their enemies.
VIGILANTE™ (TurboGrafx-16, 1 player, 600 Wii Points): Brave the streets of New York City in this side-scrolling beat-'em-up game. Thugs kidnap the beloved Madonna, and it's up to players to become vigilantes. Players fight their way into enemy territory to get her back. Enemies attack with weapons like iron pipes, chains, guns and motorcycles. To fight back, players can punch, kick or use the "nunchaku" item that appears in the stage. Players must use each of the attacks effectively to defeat their enemies. To clear a stage, defeat the boss that waits at the end. Players fight their way through exciting stages that include the City Streets, Junkyard, Brooklyn Bridge and the Backstreets.
Gain Ground™ (Sega Genesis, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points): It's the 31st century, and science and technology have progressed to the point that the human race is approaching perfection: no war, no poverty and no conflict. With nothing to worry about, the human race seems destined to live forever in harmony. But what if Earth came under attack? By this point in time, people did not know how to cope with problems or conflicts, and had completely lost their survival instincts. In response to this, the United Earth Government created the Gain Ground system, a war simulator that would help humans rediscover their lost instincts. After several terrible malfunctions, the creators became prisoners in their own creation. Now it's up to players and two courageous comrades to go into the Gain Ground system, rescue their fellow humans and destroy the system. Players battle through different periods in history as they revive their survival instincts, while trying to live.

Is there a list of upcoming VC games? I really want to know if Blazing Lasers (tg16) is slated to come out!

Blazing Lazers? I have that game..and don't see much of a difference between it and say Super Star Soldier. I can wait on that...in fact nothing released this week is really up my alley. I have the SNES in the living room and have Super Mario All stars + World so I really don't need SMW on the Wii just yet.

So if I get Super Star Soldier - will this give me my Blazing Lazers fix for now?
One thing I always loved about Blazing Lasers was the great weapon upgrades, lots of selection, lots of different power levels, does Super Star Soldier have this? :)

If you want a blazing lazers fix..then get Soldier Blade. Had I known that Soldier Blade was gonna be released so quick...i wouldn't have gotten Super Star Soldier. Soldier Blade is basically Super Star Soldier but with more of everything...so if you want a shooter fix...Soldier Blade should tied you over.

Updated my list, thanks aiko!
Another good week. Though there's nothing I'd get if I had a Wii, Super Mario World is my second favorite game of all-time (the first being Super Metroid, of course).

The Legend of Zelda (via Zelda Collector's Edition on the Gamecube, and the Classic NES Series cart on the GBA)
Funny you mention that, because the Zelda NES on the Wii's VC is a direct port from that game. Just look at the copyright logo on the title screen (1986-2003)

I've got the weekly essays on this week's VC games up on my blog. You can check 'em out. Super Mario World is the obvious winner this week, although it's nice to finally see Gain Ground released. Hopefully, Sega won't always be late with their future releases.
If you want to know what games are coming down the pike, I'd suggest checking out the other game blogs, which are tracking the games listed on the ESRB site. We can't tell exact release dates, but we know a release is imminent if it's been handed a rating.
Here's the super-short rundowns of what I wrote this week:
Super Mario World - 10/10 - Best of all the Mario games, one of my all-time faves.
Gain Ground - 7/10 - Solid if underlooked strategic action game, fun for two players.
Vigilante - 5/10 - Great coin-op conversion, but far too short and far too easy.
