I think it depends on how complete the NES system is and whether any of the games have their boxes or not. (It looks like probably not, but then the person didn't bother w/ pix of the system in its box either.) If all the games were CIB it would be worth it, particularly w/ Jimmy Connors Tennis in there (a $50 game cib). Gotta love the sellers stupid attempts to make it seem more worth it than it really is tho. And for someone just looking to relive their childhood its definitely NOT worth it.
Now THIS ad, this guy's freakin insane: http://seattle.craigslist.org/tac/tag/1111934057.html
I won't post all the details, cuz it's a long one, but he wants $400 for an SNES and a bunch of games (granted there's a lot and couple are decent titles like Secret of Mana), an NES and 52 games for $400 (only thing really worthwhile in it tho is a complete Mega Man set), and then the real crazy starts...
MARIO 64
MARIOKART 64
SUPER SMASH BROS
007 GOLDEN EYE
ZELDA OCARINA OF TIME
25 DOLLARS EACH
Holy crap, $25 for Goldeneye? Ocarina of Time? Super Mario 64? Yeah right.
CHRONO CROSS 40$
FINAL FANTASY 7 60$
FINAL FANTASY 8 50$
FINAL FANTASY 9 50$
FINAL FANTASY CHRONICLES 60$
FINAL FANTASY ANTHOLOGY 50$
IS THIS PERSON SERIOUS?! Oh yeah, love the caps lock on the entire ad, btw. And where does the dollar sign go again?

There was an ad in the Portland listings calling out people who bought and sold game systems for a profit. He stated don't believe the people that have ads like its going for a collection or museum. This struck a nerve with me and now I know I couldn't win but I emailed the a--hole back. Also personal note, I do buy and sell and as most do on here isn't it a great way to get cash?
My first email to him:
You mentioned this quote in your ad "making a video game room? making a museum" There are honest people trying to get video game stuff. I am a friend of this guy with the ad below. He does want to make a museum one day. I work with him on a weekly basis. We both buy stuff for the collection and we don't buy things we already have. I am just sending this email out to let you know not every buyer on craigslist looking for games is a scammer.
His:On Fri, Apr 10, 2009 at 12:56 PM, daddyjack <daddyjack8@yahoo.com> wrote:ya right u know u buy to sell , i know who u are you live in vancouver
I don't live in Vancouver, and I've never met this guy so I don't know how he knows me.
Mine:Actually we don't. I have family who lives in Vancouver but I live up north from there. I buy to collect and sell off the extras that I don't need. How do you know me?
His: ya whatever ridgfield, battleground, everyone up there puts vancouver for better sales, do u know that every person that does serious video game sales on craigs uses that as theeir reason? lol ya of coarse your going to save the good stuff, thats how they all work save the good stuff sell the crap. thats not really a colector. a collector would go either on ebay or to a high end store and buy what they like to colect, your basicly collecting other peoples good stuff, and lowballing them to get it. doesnt seem to honast? oh well your trip not mine. actually u try and lowball me every chance you get and the stuff usually is not of "collector ststus, thats why its obvious you are only trying to buy to resell.
Wow....hmmm buy high...I do sometimes but if I can get it at deal why not? I don't low ball either. I try to offer a good deal between each lot I get. I usually see if I can have them take a little off its a long drive to get there but I don't ask $50 when its a $200 item.
Mine: Actually I don't live there either. I live up north further. I buy as a collector for stuff I don't have. Then I do sell the rest but not to ebay and I sell it for what I pay for it to a store. Video Game Wizards in Portland has been good to me because when they do get something in I am looking for, I get a call from them. Why would I pay ebay prices for something I am looking for when I can buy a collection pick out the things I want and then get rid of the rest. It is the same theory if you had a collector car and needed parts. Why would you buy each part separate then just buy a parts car, strip out what you need and then get rid of the rest. I don't buy big lots either. I do search craigs to find stuff for myself though I do search for other people as well. Though since you don't believe me...there is no point in defending my side of the story. You have your opinion and I have mine.
His: ya ya blah blah, video game wizards what a joke totally over priced worse then ebay, and the guys wife is totally rude. what they are is a basic video game pawn shop. they have the nicest collection of yellowed nes that i have ever seen, 30 dollars for mario party? joke
Side Note: Video Game Wizards in Portland is a video game shop that is owned by I would consider friends of mine and they deal games. They don't sell Mario Party for $30 more like $15 and yellowed NES...well its a video game store, not every Nintendo NES can be perfect.
Mine: k....so your basically a troll now.. have fun
I was tired thought ok they are going to stop
His: they suck, and basicly u associate yourself with them so i guess that means? lol
Really....
Mine:Again...your opinion. I know a lot of store owners, i associate to the ones that I like. Doesn't mean you have to like them. I had my opinion. I still do. What is the purpose to respond to me, if you know that my opinion is well mine and not going to change it.
His: just wanted to see if somehow u would man up and admit that what you do on craigs amounts to nothing other then buy to resell for more $, without all the bullshit collector crap. lol only think i collect is the stuff that everyone is too cheapass to buy at a regular going price, thats why i end up "collecting" or having it in bunches as i am not going to waste my time selling to people that turn around and resell in the next few days. the longer i keep it the more it is worth is my moto? lol anyway good luck with your "collection" jack
Man up....anyone want to spam him? That would be great...
Mine: I don't really resell to people on craigslist though. I sell local through my town. Though I don't deal new things like 360, wii, PS3, PS2, Xbox, Dreamcast, N64. I get more requests for Odyssey 2, Atari 2600, Coleco Vision, and the older stuff like that. Every thing in my collection gets played. If it doesn't get played I get rid of it. There are times I do buy something for cheap and do resell it for a higher price. Last year I found 4 copies of Final Fantasy 7. I do find a lot of good deals but I don't buy on craigslist the common stuff. I am more looking for the obscure items like Coleco or Vectrex. As for the collector stand point...my friend is a collector of games. We are planning to open a museum...we just buy what we need and get rid of the rest...
http://s268.photobucket.com/albums/jj28/swlovinist/
Does that look like we resell much? We buy.
Yes I know that is swlovinist page for photobucket. I help his collection out with new boxes and games and what else I can do for his collection.
His: good God dude give me a break, pictures are nothing, i see no name anywhere? lol anyone can upload pics like that, anyway like i said i u have contacted me enough times in many different context that i know what you do guy. i have been selling on for over 2 on craigs and if i can find the time i will go through my database and find all your different offers and also things u have had for sale on craigs, i am actually done with this since somehow u belive your own stories? lol pictures? lol how about an address? that would be a little more realistic way to prove something obviously by those pics they are some sort of showroom of a business. give it up . pictures? lol so didnt see any heavy sixers? isnt that what a atari collector would have?
Mine: An Address that would be stupid. Why would I give that up? Later.
That's the end, I didn't want to do that but on the other hand :bad-words: I was frustrated from the start, I know I wasn't winning the war with an :bad-words:
His email...:daddyjack8@yahoo.com and if he posts another ad I will post it on here.

Unless the guy specifically says "Really would prefer to see to go to someone who would enjoy this" in his ad, he has no control over what people do with the stuff he sells.
coreys429
04-14-2009, 01:52 PM
Most the time I can tell if people are buying to resell or not. The stuff I sell, is stuff that people are looking for. When someone asks hey can you find a PS1 for under $20 with controllers and memory card. I say yes, most the time my friends say that and I don't mind selling to them at a low cost.

His: how would anybody ever see the "museum"? or will it just be you and swlvovinist sitting in a roomfull of video games? lol now that sounds like a real goal to acheive?
Mine:First off who the hell are you? Why do you care? I lost interest. I wanted to make a point and or state a opinion. I did so why does it matter to you, to email over and over. Doesn't it take time to make a museum happen not just over night? At least people have goals, the only goal I see from you is that you like bringing people down to your level. Lets see if we can make others mad because I don't want the competition selling on craigslist. I think that is what it comes down to you don't want to people buy the things so you can make a dime as well. I sell older games that no one either A. has played or B. remember from there childhood or teen years playing. That's what I do and I've sold like this since I was 17/18 around that area.
I'm Done. After his email back which I know he's gonna do. I am blocking...grrr...why do people have to be this way?
mobiusclimber
04-14-2009, 05:11 PM
There's a lot of reasons WHY he could be stating this. It could be like you say that he's a reseller and trying to shame others away from the good deals so he can buy them up himself. Or it could be that every time he emails someone over an ad that he wants to pick up, the person says "sorry, sold" or "someone's picking it up now." But what I see happening A LOT lately on CL is this...
You send an email to someone saying "I'd like to buy what you have in that ad, I can come over at X time" or worst case scenario "tomorrow at x time." So then you hear back, "I got a lot of responses, so I think I put too low a price, will you pay X amount?" or "someone offered me (three times what my ad says), don't want to start a bidding war but... (I really really do, and you have no way to know if I'm even being truthful about it or not)..."
So yeah, people DO get sick of the resellers and, in particular, the stores gobbling up all the good deals, especially if the stores also place ads (want ads, sale ads, spam ads, deceptive ads). It pisses people off and it ruins the community. Buying to resell... I can't argue w/ that since I do it too. The problem is when people start turning CL into Ebay, spam the place up with stupid want ads offering peanuts for expensive games, and basically being dicks. I see enough ads on CL that make me want to punch someone, so I'm more inclined to give this person the benefit of the doubt. Not saying anything negative against you, but I'm sure you can see the other side of the coin, whether you agree w/ it or not.
coreys429
04-14-2009, 07:22 PM
I agree with it. I do get tired of ads stating that I think I went too low on certain item. Though stating that it can't be for a museum and then why you have so much is a personal attack it seems. Though I don't buy normal stuff on here, I buy Atari, Coleco, Intellivision, and older stuff like that. I got out of selling Nintendos because everyone was like I could get a better deal on ebay instead of you.

First, I agree with you on the Video Game Wizards thing. I traded some stuff with him last time I was in Portland and would easily do so again. I had a fantastic experience and feel as if he gave me a great deal.
Second, I also agree with mobius that even though the guy sounds like a jerk (and one who really needs to invest in a little typing software) he might just be pissed about resellers ruining Craigslist. Case in point, the other day I saw someone selling an AWESOME Nintendo branded bookshelf for $5. Deal of the century! I email them and ask about it only to be told that someone already picked it up. I was crushed but figured it was another game geek like me and that at least someone out there would enjoy it. Instead I see it two days later listed at $200 located in a different section of town. This guy states that he 'carefully restored' it and blah blah blah. Considering I saw the pictures of the original ad I'd say that 'carefully restored' meant 'dusted it off'.
I buy and sell on Craigslist as well. Sometimes I sell games for a little higher than I'd pay for it but I then use any extra cash to add to my collection. A little buying and selling is fine but it's the guys like I mentioned above that really ruin it.

Be as vague as possible when you list your items. It comes WITH the system! As opposed to a console that comes without the system, apparently.

It's why you always meet in a public place during the daytime.
CNN and other news outlets are already pushing it as the new big threat, of course. A fright tactic to make it look like they're reporting actual news.

Most of the people who contact me via CL about my ads have the intelligence of cold butter. Housebound people who want attention and fake interest in goods so people will talk to them. It's why so many back out at the last minute.
Either way, I'm listing my Retro Duo for another week. No one buys it by then, I'll label it as "worthless, no one wants" and toss it in the garbage. Sell it or toss it, it'll be out of my sight.

I recently replied to someone selling an NES system and games in the original boxes, everything was priced at $60 total. I asked where they were located, got a reply back, and then asked to make arrangements when to meet. I haven't heard anything back yet(over a day later), and I notice that the price from the ad is now raised to $75. Deciding to ask more is kind of low but understandable(it's really worth more than that), but what bothers me is that they didn't bother to get back to me. I probably would have agreed to pay more, but they just decided to post a higher price and wait for someone else to reply instead of asking me to pay more before changing the ad. I'm still debating if I should email again and offer to pay more, there's really only 1 game that I want from the lot. The decent thing to do is research the value first before posting your ad, as changing the price once someone is interested is pretty low.

I've been dealing with a guy who is trying to run his own mini ebay off of craigslist. He's taking offers and attempting to play everyone off of each other. He has 4 N64 games that I need so I was initially interested but the whole "I got a new offer for $45. Would you go $50?" thing made me not even care. It's been 2 days and he still hasn't sold it because he keeps trying to drive the price off. At least with ebay I can see how much time the whole deal will take to work out

In Portland, theres an ad for Gamejunkeez which they are an ebay reseller. The ad states that if you make them an offer they will usually take it. I gave them an offer for $200, which came with a bunch of atari 2600, 5200 stuff, ps1 stuff, snes stuff and other stuff. They were like we'll give you $50, I told the guy FU.

That's a very blatant example of the sickness that's permeating CL right now. Someone posts an ad for a bunch of costly PS1 games and ask for $50 for the lot. You email them and wait to hear a response. Then the response is "we sold it to someone for $200." I almost feel like emailing them back and saying "IT WAS WORTH $400 YOU STUPID @#$%!!!!" But what would be the point. There used to be a small degree of honor amongst thieves, but not anymore. It kind of sucks when you try to "play by the rules," like not emailing people with yard sale ads asking if you can stop by early and buy stuff up, but then getting screwed over because of it (arriving at the yard sale when it starts only to be told that they sold the items days ahead of the actual sale).
I can't count the times I've responded to a CL ad only to be told that someone then offered more for it. I usually tell the person to sell it at that price, I don't care about it anymore. For one thing, there's no assurance that there's actually any "bids" on the person's item! They could just be lying and trying to drive up the price. So I let other wolves tear away at the carcass, there's frankly on reason to get into pissing matches over one ad when you can just as soon find another one.

In the mid 90s, I tried selling an original NES system in the free classifieds for $50. I had three separate families come by to buy it, all excited, and then kind of flip out when they saw -- god forbid -- I was selling an original Nintendo Entertainment System.
It's because in their households, they were all using "Nintendo System" as a slang reference for the Super Nintendo. One family looked at it, and were like, "What IS that? Is that a NEW version of the Super Nintendo?" Freakin' idiots.
It also kind of annoyed me when friends would refer to Street Fighter II as "Street Fighter," because despite it having the II in its title, didn't seem to know a Street Fighter 1 existed, and it would cause some confusion because I actually owned Fighting Street at the time.

Is this the BuyBacks in Cincinnati, Western Hills area? Thats' the one I've been to, and their prices are downright laughable. It's actually rare I see a game in there with a reasonable price on it. Yeah, their prices on last gen stuff are okay, but vintage... they'll go out of business eventually because no one's buying that stuff.
They had a Master System type 1 in box for $50 which isn't bad... but not one game in stock for it.
$100 for a ROB with all parts, marked down to $50, no one's touching it.
Maybe, MAYBE when these game stores realize that people willing to pay eBay prices often stay home and do so ON EBAY... they'll either drop prices or move the higher-valued stuff to eBay stores where it may actually sell. Otherwise, they can keep going out of business when their overpriced games don't sell, either is fine with me.
Now this is a nice listing with a fair price. Boxed N64 with 3 boxed games, Zelda included(doesnt' state if it's OOT or MM, but has a strategy guide)

No, its the Buy Backs in Canton. Same as you said, the new gen stuff great prices on, but the "Vintage" come on. I saw 45.00 for Super Smash 64 yesterday. 75 for castlevania symphony of the night PS1.
Sometimes I can get some good deals on boxed NES games, for some reason they do not charge more for boxed games....... makes no sense. I got Stryder and Commando boxed near mint condtion for 1.50 each.
I got that same N64 boxed set up minus the games for 40.00 a few weeks ago at a garage sale. 70 maybe on Ebay, but not on C-List

Here is what I don't understand - obviously it is selling on ebay for x amount of money, so why not charge that much? If someone is willing to pay that much, why should you be insulted that people charge that much? I hate people that say "you should lower the price because you don't have to pay fees, etc..." So then someone makes the same amount they would have had they listed it on ebay. It just doesn't make any sense.

I've got plenty of replies like that before, I had 5 N64 games that I wanted $5 each and someone offered me $5 total. I replied back saying that they must have misunderstood my ad as I wanted $5 for each one, not for all of them. I never heard back. LOL
I kept getting replies from someone else wanting all my NES games for $50, and later increased the offer to $75. I kept ignoring this person, I had a ton of games listed including a copy of Action 52 so $50 was an extremely low amount. Someone else offered me $100 for the lot but this person explained that they dealt with video games and would be reselling them, I replied back politely while still declining their offer. This other person was honest and polite with me so I was polite and friendly with them. Just for comparison, someone else offered to trade me a PS3 for everything, this just gives you an idea as to the value of the NES games(worth well above $50).

As I said.... people who pay such prices do so on eBay. They don't go to those stores. This is why FFVII commands a decent chunk on eBay, but every shop I see that stocks it at that price can't sell a single copy. If they sold them for $30 they might make a killing, but at $70 each, no one in the store will touch it. They're pricing to a customer base that doesn't shop there. Those that go into the store... well, why should an old, used game cost more than new games for modern consoles? That's all they care about.
It's not even a rare game. A lot of the stores I see this at, they have 8 copies or more in stock.
I sold 3 Saturn games for $50 today, about $25 below eBay/Amazon average for same games in same condition. I knew if I had asked eBay values, they'd still be sitting here.
And really, $20 or more for SMB/Duck Hunt? I remember when Funcoland sold those for a DIME because they had hundreds of copies. That game should cost $2 at most.

There's offering a lower price, and then there's insulting someone's intelligence.
I already try to price fair, below eBay/Amazon value. Just because a person wants to pay less doesn't mean they can.

On eBay, I'd guess they feel like they might be able to get a deal. Invariably it will end up in the $40+ range, but they feel like maybe this time they'll be lucky and get it for less. They're willing to pay up to $40 or whatever, but they'd rather feel like they have the chance to get a deal.

With Ebay your Market is your whole country, or the whole world if you choose so. The more buyers there are the more of a market their is for that specific item. This causes more competition for the buyers and less for sellers, hence the higher sale prices on an Internet market.
With a local game store, there is only the local community as your market. The less eligable buyers you have the lower the sale prices have to be. With this type of market there is more competiton with the sellers and less with the buyers
Hope this clears things up,

Ebay shoppers also have a wider selection of copies. With or without manuals, light or no scratches, loose or complete... a game store may have 1-4 copies and none may be in the condition the buyer wants. It's safer to pay shipping than it is to pay the same cost in gasoline to go to the store and not find what you want.
Store shoppers want games for their kids or for themselves. Many don't care WHY an old title is valuable. Especially if it costs more than the system($20 for a used PS1 console vs $40 for a game for the PS1). Parents especially don't care about things such as rarity.

When someone wants something without having to search for it they look to ebay. With stores you can never be sure if they have a copy in stock, or they might be far away. You'd have to phone the stores to find out if they have something, and then travel there to pick it up if they do. Ebay is easier for them, just search for something and buy it right away, no need to search constantly and it goes right to your home. Plus with some stores they won't tell you a price unless you're there in person, that's really annoying when you ask what the price is but they just won't tell you. If I'm calling different stores to find out which one is cheapest, I want to know the price or I won't bother with them.
I still don't use ebay, I don't mind waiting until I come across something in the wild.
