Ebay shoppers also have a wider selection of copies. With or without manuals, light or no scratches, loose or complete... a game store may have 1-4 copies and none may be in the condition the buyer wants. It's safer to pay shipping than it is to pay the same cost in gasoline to go to the store and not find what you want.
Store shoppers want games for their kids or for themselves. Many don't care WHY an old title is valuable. Especially if it costs more than the system($20 for a used PS1 console vs $40 for a game for the PS1). Parents especially don't care about things such as rarity.
another good point of view.

That's a REALLY old episode though. I remember watching that when it first came out. For all we can remember at that time there might have been a spike in the prices of the Atari 2600. Infact I'm pretty sure there was near that time.. I bought my first one at the end of that price jump.
Never the less I'm sure it would have been for 100% complete mint boxed systems but they might have forgotten to mention that.

Funny, I saw this one for a 2600 with a couple games for $250. I couldnt help it and messaged them saying what they have is worth about $30. This is the message I got back:
next time u want to open ur mouth and act like your knowledgable about something perhaps u should do some research first. Google Cash in the attic and look for ATARI episode..I Think u may find it informative.THEY ARE COLLECTABLES now.they also are worth close to 300 .so go spend you allowance your mommy gave you on bubble gum CHRISSY
This is what I wrote back:
Thanks for your delightful message.
What you are selling is the Atari 2600, also known as the Atari VCS. Its the most popular version of the classic Atari lineup. They were a staple in every gadget crazy household in the late 70's and early 80's. Countless companies decided to cash in on the craze by flooding the market with poor software thinking people would play anything you throw at them. Companies would even make more copies of a game than there were systems in peoples households! People eventually got sick of playing endless crappy games and the market went into the biggest market crash in video game history. This slump in sales would continue untill a little Japanese company called Nintendo released their Famicom (short for Family Computer) game system in the US under the name "Nintendo Entertainment System."
Once the Nintendo came out Ataris were either thrown away or handed down to little brothers and sisters. The consoles themselves are a dime a dozen, I have three myself. The games are even cheaper to find. I've bought boxes of 10 or more for around $5. There are a few games that are very rare and hard to find, those can fetch some money on Ebay. Everything else is as common as dirt.
As you can see, I know what Im talking about, I've been a video game hobbiest for my whole life. I have a job and live with my girlfriend. What you are asking is outrageous. You might be able to get $30 for it all. I dont want it, like I said, I have three of them. If I thought I could sell them for $250 a piece I would have done so a long time ago.
If you still don't belive me, head over to www.digitpress.com , its has one of the largest online rarity guides you can find. Now you can do YOUR research.
ok so some of my above facts may not be 100% accurate but I think I made my point, but this is what she wrote back:
just to complete this email research war..i sent the atari fed ex this morning to a man in california..he wired me cash...so i guess u r still smarter than me..but i am 250 richer than u. good luck with being a teacher to us ignorant people

The thing is, if someone really believes their crap is worth that much....I try to sell them my extras for extremely high prices. If you have spare systems, offer to sell them for the "low" price of $80 each so they can make a profit on them. Explain that you just want them gone and don't care that you're "losing out". See how much you can get from them(I'm serious about this). LOL
Also, I try not to tell people like that about DP or any other forums. I really don't want people like that messing around on the forums(I've actually seen people I've dealt with on craigslist register here and on another forum I'm on, though they haven't stayed long thankfully and they've left). Plus if they actually get something rare, I'd prefer them not to know about it. :)

There are two kinds of people I see on CL trying to sell things for outrageous sums of cash: people who clearly don't know what their stuff is worth, and people who do and are hoping to find people who don't.
I had an ad that I had been debating posting on here. A person on CL is selling some Xbox, 360 & PS2 games. Most of the prices are reasonable, but a few are just nuts. Final Fantasy XII, for instance, was listed at $40! There were also a couple games that were worth twice what the person was asking for them. I think they even listed one game under the wrong system. This person clearly doesn't know anything about video games. Maybe they were given a box of games from a friend that owned them money, who knows?
Conversely, I've emailed a few people who have stupidly high prices listed of games telling them that they are never going to get their asking price b/c it's stupidly high. One of the people I sent an email like that to had an ad for some NES games with really high prices for all of them and some bs about how you can check on ebay they're worth ten times that! I couldn't help myself this time, that appeal to check ebay was just too much. So I wrote them an email saying that I had in fact checked ebay and all the Buy-It-Now auctions for those games were over more than half what he was asking. His reply "Yeah I know, I'm just trying to rip people off" basically. Yeah, he said words to that effect. (Along the lines of I know what this is really worth and I'm just trying to sell this to people who miss these old games and are willing to pay good money for them.)

Craigslist is for face-to-face deals only. If that person is honestly accepting a wire transfer from across the country, they can expect to be screwed over somehow.
I was thinking the same thing, actually. Craigslist has warned people about this type of scam for quite some time...
In any event, this sounds like a case of someone who is butthurt over being shot down by a knowledgeable video game enthusiast. I'm curious to see if she still has the 2600, something that would not surprise me.

This strikes me supicious. $35 for a DS Lite and a carry case? Funny he says he has no games for it, but he has it turned on with a game playing. Even if he needs the money he could get at least $50 for it. Somehow I suspect he stole it and wants to fence before he gets caught. His lack of a location seems to work towards that.

My friend wanted me to do that for him. He asked me if I could sell burned games for him. I told F*** Off. I do sell games for a side hobby but I am not going to burn my name for bootlegs. He wanted me to sell them at $20 buck a pop because why buy a game at full price, when you can get the same game for cheaper.:deadhorse:

Fight for a BIKE! - NOT A JOKE!
My roommate and I are giving away a brand new Kona mountain bike. Here is the catch: You have to fight someone for it.
The first two people who email us can come down and fist fight for the bike this Saturday.
The winner gets the bike.

Sounds more satisfying.

I always get a kick out of how people sell games that "work perfectly" or whatnot, but they fail to mention how the batteries are dead and you can't save. The Pokemon games above for instance... real good chance the batteries are dead. A friend of mine was just compaining last week how she misses playing gameboy pokemon because she can't save anymore.
Now admittedly, she wasn't even aware the games used batteries at all to save (until I explained), which I feel speaks about how many people selling old games that rely on batteries are taking advantage of those who are unaware of battery reliance in older games. They shamelessly advertise that the game works fine, but don't note battery condition, thereby suckering those unaware of such things. I think my friend just assumed the games saved similarly to that of a jump drive or memory card.
Oh well. Caveat Emptor, and all that.

Or the people simply just play the video games for a minute and just test them to make sure they power up and go, before re-sale.
There are many people in this world who dont realize that some games have batteries. I dont think they are intentionally not telling someone the battery might not work. They dont know themselves.

Let me guess, your friend had a copy of either Pokemon Silver, Gold, or Crystal for the Gameboy Color. Those games seem to always have a dead battery because they use a real time clock to keep track of the day and time in real life. The older games are usually working fine including the saves. I avoid buying those specific Gameboy Color Pokemon games because the majority of copies I've come across have a dead battery.
I try to check games before I buy them whenever possible, there's always the chance that they go dead. If I can't test them I usually ask if the saves are still working when I'm buying games.

This is true, and I assume this is so for many. Including some over-the-counter sales (flea markets and the like). It's a shame really.
Were I to purchase a portable system game via CL (I wouldn't, but hypothetically), I would ask the seller to save a game before I got there. Then I would check to see if the game save was still there before purchase. If not, I'd lowball. But that's just me.

I'll have to ask her... I think she said yellow, but I can't be 100% sure. Meh, I've been fixing for a while now to order a bunch of CR2032s for my NES/SNES collection... maybe I'll do her a favour and cram one in her game for her (if it will fit; Not sure, never changed a GB battery before).
Personally, battery condition is always on my mind when I read CL. I just wish the sellers would be nice enough to mention it as well. But I won't hold my breath on that. ;)

It is TECHNICALLY sealed in a factory...
I actually remember seeing similar games at KMart. Old cartridge games, sometimes PS1 games(in more recent years) sealed on these bubbles and sold at the lower-end shops(and I consider KMart to be VERY low end, every time I go in one... even Big Lots feels like a more upper-class shopping experience).
The price is VERY good considering some of these titles, but it's not exactly "random" if you list the games. Wait, what? They LISTED the games? Unheard of!

About a month ago, I sold someone my spare type 2 Genesis with 6 games for $20. he had a bag full of Genesis consoels and games in his trunk he'd bought from a yard sale, genesis 1 and 2 consoles, some AC adaptors, no TV cables. Looks like he's parting off some fo the extras now. I remember the Ren & Stimpy game in his bag and the Sonic 3D Blast was a worn label copy I tossed in.

Alright so selling these things, however i still haven't gotten PS1 and Nintendo 64 and their games as well
BUT! as soon as i get them (probably this week :)
-Game Cube (um its silver) along with 2 controllers, animal crossings, nba live 2005, tony hawks skateboarding underground 1, tony hawks skateboarding underground 2 coming with it
-Nintendo 64 with probably at least 3 games or so
-PS1, not sure how many games but i am sure with at least 1
All of these stations I am considering to start bid/price $300, considering 8 games $120 value ($15 a piece), and then $180 for 3 stations ($60 a piece)
ALTHOUGH!!! if you want the game cube fast and not PS1 or Nintendo 64
Starting bid $100, and i mean if you give me $125 deal its yours automatically just come and pick it up and give me the money so yea
CONTACT ME THROUGH EMAIL ONLY, you want pic just ask everything is in normal condition really, everything works fine for me!

Gamecube- $30 at Gamestop
PS1- average $20 used
N64- average $20-$40 used(depends on how scummy the game store is)
Sports games- worth $1-$3 each no matter what they are. Animal Crossing MAYBE $15 if it has the original memory card with the "gift" file.
And they use the term "bid". Guaranteed this seller will tell people that others are "bidding" to jack the price up.
Now, this isn't the specific item in question, but he has it listed for reference anyway-
http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/tag/1161691438.html
He has tried to get me to buy this while I was in his store but even if I had that money to burn I have no place to store it. It's one of those you throw darts at and it scores electronically. I'm not certain if he's asking a decent value... and I told him he needs to write a better ad, but oh well...
However, this guy charges $50 for a PlayStation and $60 for a PSOne. $50 for a Dreamcast. He KNOWS the local used game store chages much lower prices for every console. They want $20 for a PSOne and $30 for a Dreamcast... he also wants $70 for a Gamecube while everyone else sells for half that, but he REFUSES to lower his prices, as if he can't figure out why no one wants to pay him twice as much.
His only good side is that he charges a flat price for games based on what system they are, so occasionally you can find some rare Gamecube title for $15 that other places charge $40 for... but it's rare.
But his main business seems to be guitars, amplifiers and other music stuff, so the video games just don't interest him enough to price to move. Sad, considering it takes up such a large chunk of his store.

I posted a wanted ad for a $20 SNES. Some jackoff send me a message to the tune of "awful demanding for being a cheap skate. Good luck buddy I highly doubt you will find one for that."
Who asked this asshole, anyway? I really don't CARE if game stores charge $50 for them. Try to sell a complete SNES with all hookups to one of those game stores and tell me if they offer more than $5 in store credit.
Someone's actually asking a REASONABLE price for an NES with 3 games and zapper gun. Must not have got the memo to check eBay prices first.
