I have posted this ad in the "wanted" section-
http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/wan/1165873640.html

It's a very clear ad. I want a game console with 1 controller, AC adaptor and TV hookup.

First email from a responder is this-

"how many are you looking for"

It doesn't make much sense but I answer anyway-

"Just the console itself with all necessary hookups. Games? I'd have to see a list of what you have but I'm not buying many games right now."

His next email is simply this-

"no how many are you looking for snes"

At this point, I infer that this person might, in fact, be either stupid or is deliberately playing around for attention. I sent a reply telling them to not email me again and I marked their email address as junk to the filters would weed it out. I really don't wish to deal with people like this.

That is reasonable. If I lived there, I would respond. I usually add if you care if its yellowed or not.

Collector-wise, yes. But for $20 I'm not going to be to picky so long as it works.

I won't take a model 2 SNES, though, No s-video support. But so few people even have those.

$25 would be a fair price. Not $40
http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/tag/1168044474.html

Xbox with 4 games, $60. 4 games... all sports. WHY? Why do people even BUY sports games brand new? They have no resale value. They can't be very fun because there's so many of them on the used market. Sports games should actually decrease the value of something at this point.

Not to fly off topic, but people who buy sports games new every year do so because they want the latest players/teams/stats. This is what makes sports games so worthless the second the next version comes out (besides there being a billion copies). Hell, I have Fight Night Round 3...and I see Fight Night Round 4 and I am kind of bummed I don't have the latest fighters.

As a person that has to hide his video game obsession socially amongst the much more acceptable sports dorks, I'd usually welcome a chance to slam them...but their obsession with staying up-to-date here makes a lot of sense.

Oh yeah...60 bucks for anything X-Box 1 = hardy har! ;)

Seems that rather than make a REAL GOOD sports game, it's just re-release the same game over with the new roster and a few minor tweaks... in some cases the roster is already outdated by the time the game is even released, thanks to the dev cycle and time to print discs. I couldn't care about current players... or even actual players. But sports games mostly appeal to sports fans, not game players.

For comparison, $40 for an Xbox with 2 controllers and 4 actual good games

I mostly blame this on smaller used game stores. They price tag some system at a fortune and the people who walk into the store assume it's really worth that much.

A follow-up to my other reply on here about some of the emails I get from people regarding my CL ads: I have an ad for a PS2 bundle with around 30 games for $160. So someone emailed me thus:

I have a dream cast, 3 controllers, 2 memory cards and 14 games. I'll trade u all of this for 5 of your ps2 games, my pick

Considering I don't have a single game worth more than $10 in that lot, this would probably be a pretty good deal. Of course, he doesn't say which games HE wants, nor does he mention which games he has. I don't need another Dreamcast anyway. So I email him back asking him what Dreamcast games he has. This is his reply:

Alot of good ones not typing them all sorry

So now I realize that my original impression that I got was correct: he has 14 disc-only copies of NBA 2K. I delete both emails and shrug my shoulders. A few hours later, he sends this missive:

This is a smokingg deal for u

Who is this guy, Jim Carrey in The Mask? What kinda deal are YOU "smokingg"? LOL

For sale is a massive collection of my video games. A little bit of everything in here. Condition of items are all great unless otherwise noted! Price for everything is $2500 obo. Everything goes in one group, no selling off individually! No trades! Everything listed includes the system, with the exception of the PlayStation 3 category. All of this retails WAY over $2500. I'm passing this incredible collection onto someone who wishes to start off with an ultimate set of games! I might take pictures if enough people want them.

I guess they didn't plan to pick them up from you. I've had people travel pretty far to pick things up from me, though not that often. One that sticks in my mind was someone from Rochester that was going on vacation near my area. Another person from Winnipeg contacted me to ship, but after I said I don't ship she asked her friend to pick it up from me and mail it to her.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (GBA)
Price: $20.00
This game is brand new in box, and therefore in mint condition. Sadly, I was forced to open the box to remove the safety sticker because the security alarms kept going off when I continued shopping the day I bought this game, and so I had to open and take the security sticker off. Otherwise, the game is complete with box and manuals - the cartridge itself is still in the plastic bag . I can meet anywhere in Toronto along the subway route - preferably in Scarborough or Downtown Toronto.

I really don't trust these console modders that advertise on CL. You don't know if they have any experience.
http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/tag/1174695392.html

A little story about CL, Paypal and distance sales...

May of 2008. I listed some games on local CL and someone in California asks to buy and pay all shipping. I'd done 1 mail sale via CL prior so I went with it. Agreed to take Paypal for an over $150 total transaction. Mailed with delievry confirmation.

A week later the buyer makes a not received claim. Too bad, as I have DC which says it was delivered. He won't respond to emails. And as he specifically denied postal insurance, even if it was a misdelivered package, I'm not responsible. My PP acount was emptied by then so I'm in the negative. I got along well with the people at my bank, so I made direct personal contact and made up some story about my PP account being hijacked, and they agreed to deny any PP transaction attempted to my account unless I said otherwise. Unusual practice, but they did it. And as far as I'm concerned, with his refusal to answer emails, he's after free goods.

He doesn't get his money back. 2 weeks later I'm visited by a cop. Buyer is saying he never got the goods OR a tracking #. Cop makes his usual "I'll lock you up" threats. I produce a DC #. That was the last I heard from the cop.

In short... I stopped using Paypal totally after that. I also swore to stick to local deals only via CL and also wrote off deals by mail for some time. This is why I'm sticking solely to trades and no cash sales in my trade thread, and always sending first. I really don't wish to deal with the 1% chance of another scam and cop visit.

as for Paypal... they threatened over the negative balance and such. I told them to kiss my rear end and never heard from them again. Yes, veen though they suppsoedly didn't refund the guy, I remained int he negative. Scumbags.

I still haven't decided whether this is someone who genuinely knows what things are worth, or someone trying to get people to drive down prices to get a good deal.

Strangely enough, most of the stuff sold on the Craigslist here is reasonable and occasionally great. Just the other day, someone was selling a complete Atari 800XL with drive for $10. Another one was selling a lot of around 5 Atari systems/computers including a Supercharger for $50 OBO. So nothing's THAT outrageous.

This is the same kind of tactic bullies use to try to get you to sell your stuff for nothing. If it's really not worth anything, why get all pissed off and try to convince people to sell it for less?

Because asking eBay prices on craigslist is a waste of time. Poeple who want to pay eBay prices are ALREADY ON EBAY ANYWAY! This is why FF7 sells for $60+ on eBay but used game stores can't move their $60 copies to anyone.

Edit- they edited their listing to drop the price back down to $150. Still more than it's worth.

You keep saying that but I've sold FF7 for $60 on CL more times than I can count.

Besides that, anyone who thinks every damn old game should be $1 can go rot in flea market hell, digging through old copies of Madden on the Genesis and Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt looking for that treasure.

Maybe it depends on the region, but around here no one will pay more than $25 for FF7. Game stores fail to sell them. I listed my copy about 2 years ago and said I'd take offers. Highest I got offered was $20 from anyone. But then again, I really don't think the game is anything special. Better than many RPGs, sure, but hardly a game I drool over. It's also common. I have it on PC and never even touch it.

But seriously, most people don't care why old games have high values. Especially not why some NES game that's $5 on virtual console costs $50-$100 in the box. I don't understand it either. You're not going to convince these people of "worth". It's why I laugh at any retro used game store that goes under, for trying to sell "valuable" overpriced games to people who couldn't care why some game has a high value, especially when a store has 10 or more copies in stock(seriously, I've seen between 10-15 copies of FF7 at some stores, no wonder people laugh at the prices). Considering these stores give $5 trade credit for the game, they get what they're asking for.

It's really the stuck-up jerks who think every retro title is made of gold that I can't stand. Older systems have good games, but they also had their share of total crap. $100 for Bubble Bobble is an insult for a game with no save feature and pretty mediocre play. Let alone NES Metroid, which is basically awful compared to other titles in the series.

For $130 I doubt this works perfectly.

Yeah, those are pretty terrible. My local CL has similar ones up most of the time. There's also a ton of people selling DS flash cards with 'your choice' of x amount of games.

Sounds like a good deal to me. Less than $2 a game plus systems. Sure the games are all commons, but most are decent titles, and looks like a lot of the SNES and newer stuff is at least boxed.
But the presentation of the ad is what is atrocious, a list that makes some sense when you read it would make that much easier to sell.

Yeah it's kinda hard to tell if that's a good deal or a poor one because it's nearly impossible to read. Probably a good deal if the Sega CD works, but that NES looks like someone used it as a fake tooth and then drank a lot of coffee. LAWL!

http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/tag/1179632234.html

The problem is if all games cost $1 it would be near impossible to get ahold of certain games. Even uncommons, or even just games that people hold in high esteem (like FF7) would be a lot tougher to track down. Part of the reason anyone's willing to sell Panzer Dragoon Saga or Snatcher or what have you is because of the "value" of the game. That's especially true of games that truly ARE rare. If the chances of ever seeing it again are small AND it would only net you $1 to sell it, you might keep as many copies as you luck into.

I don't disagree at all that some games are over-valued, and I think I've contributed to this thread enough to show that I'm more than willing to openly mock people who ask way too much for stuff that isn't worth it, but I'm not in favor of the pendulum swinging the other way either. Finding great deals is awesome, and it's one of the best parts about being a collector (that and playing some awesome games), but I'm glad not everyone cares so little about their games that they'd sell them for next to nothing.

One other thing I've found: if you ask people to give you an offer on something, they'll invariably give you the lowest offer they think you might be inclined to take. I usually write "price is firm unless you buy more than one thing from me" somewhere in my ad. This doesn't stop people from sending me offers (or even asinine offers), but I get a lot less of them and they're not always totally stupid.

They work great, but don't come with cords, so you can't test em. And who WOULDN'T pay $25 more for a PS2 without cords than what Gamestop charges for one with them? Let alone $50 for a PS1 (cords or no, someone lost they mind).

Around here everyones broke, that ad will stay up there for a month before he takes it down, just like the four ads of sega genesis systems with 3 or four games and a controller for 20-30 dollars, and the perfectly sealed 25 nes games that he opened just to play them all for 500 bucks.

One price, one box. No exceptions sorry. Not selling seperate. Cash or trade for an origional XBox console.

Turbo Graphics 16 - worked last time I could find the power cord
controller
Bonk games (2) (one of the best for this system)
other games but nothing special (2 I think)
console
power cord is missing... otherwise I would keep it...

PS/1 - works but a little flaky at times
console
controller
couple of games but nothing special
power and tv adapter

LYNX II system (old Atari Handheld) - works great
car adapter
2 games - casino and blox
system (first hand held color)

Sega Genesis, only $115, the only reason it's so cheap is that the Genesis doesn't have it's controller or cables. But it does come with six games, and ONE of them isn't even opened. Still packaged. Everything works.
