Here is what I have played most recently:

XBox:
-Sid Meier's Pirates (addictive!)
-NBA Live 2004 (I won the first couple of games easily but had a horrible shooting percentage compared to the computer AI, good thing I was able to develop a good system for stealing the ball consistently)
-NHL 2003 (default camera sucks, had to switch to "Classic" view)
-NCAA March Madness 2006 (the computer defense is airtight even on the easy levels but sooner or later, I'll "figure out" the AI)

Dreamcast:
-World Series Baseball 2K2 (I played this for the very first time today and still piled up a ton of runs, going 8 for 9 with Todd Zeile while scoring over 30 runs using the 2001 Mets roster)

Got in a little Neo-Geo time last night. Gave Neo Driftout another go. Got stuck on stage 5 again! Still I think it's the best racing on the Neo edging out Overtop!

Also played an round and a half of Neo Turfmasters. I like the game but it was frustrating me as I was getting bogeys and up. But I finally played as the Veteran and the slower meters helped my ass out...

Now I have 110 Shines in Super Mario Sunshine, and it's much slower going now. When I first started the game, I could rack up 20 Shines like nothing, but at this point it's a victory just adding one to the total. I did finally do both Episode 8 stages I was putting off, after consulting an FAQ somewhat for tips. Of course, being a platform game, a guide can only do so much, so they were still tough and time-consuming. Then I slowly went through and collected 100 coins on each stage for those Shines. I'm still avoiding those last three red coin challenges, though. I did get Yoshi to the stage on the island with the pipe only to discover that the stage is very difficult too. :/ I blew through all my lives, and now I'm not looking forward to getting Yoshi's loser ass over there again. What I'm mostly missing at this point, I think, are blue coin Shines. I've been picking up more coins here and there as I attempt other stuff, and I even bumped up my Noki Bay total by six more. I really wish I had a guide book for this game, though, since eventually I'll have to use a FAQ to find the ones I'm missing, but I'd rather use pictures and maps to help me than a text file.

True, but let's think logically about this topic for a second (instead of just incessently posting game after game every day), and realize that this is the most worthless thread anyone could ever create because it will inevitably continue forever. It can never die, because someone will revive it every day to list the next game they played that day. But guess what, no one cares what anyone else is playing. They only care what they're playing. So they come in, post their stupid game, and don't read anyone elses posts! And then the next person comes in and does the same thing. It's an endless chain of stupidity, where each post is self-serving and no real dialogue is going on. It is completely contrary to the purpose of a discussion board. Is it not? Yes, you're going to tell me about the 5% of people like you who read every post in here and who occassionally reply to someone else's "Game of the Day", but those are the rare exceptions.

So yes, now the 5% of people who actually read these posts will say "listen asshole, if you don't like it, don't read it." To that I say... good point. Still, seeing it taking up a spot on the 1st page everyday is annoying, especially considering that it offers no benefit to the board-- there is no real dialogue, debate, or discussion. Even more annoying is the fact that it can never die because some idiot would always revive it to tell people how he played Lost Planet for 2 hours today. Anyone care?

So let the "rare exceptions" have their fun and move on. Is that so hard? There's no rule that every topic on a message board has to appeal to EVERY member and involve EVERY member to be worthwhile. I've seen plenty of discussions that only really involve a few people, and even if no one else cares about the topic, it's still worth having around for the few people that do. THAT is the purpose of a message board.

Personally, I think this is one of the most interesting topics on the Retrogaming Roundtable. Unlike other topics that quickly run their course, this one can literally be about any game on any system. Sure, some people like to just post a name of a game and that's it, and sometimes that can be a little interesting in and of itself since you never know what odd stuff someone can be playing. Other people, like myself, enjoy going into further detail, talking about the challenges they've just beaten and the ones they're about to face and also discussing what works and doesn't work in the game (kind of like a mini-review). Sometimes I even talk about interesting details about the release of a game or comparisons to other games, or I'll even post about my history with a particular title. Maybe nobody cares what I write, but I can at least say I enjoy when other people make similar "blog-style" posts.

Completely agreed with. And for anyone that is wondering if anyone reads this thread, for the record it is usually the first thread I check on the board. I always enjoy seeing what other people are playing (or what videogamedarryl is buying next). And although I don't know anyone personally it is always fun to see what genres people really like. For example I know that Aussie2B loves RPG's, Videogamedarryl military shooters, and DigitalSpace racing games.

For the record I'm playing Phoenix Wright: Justice for All. A charming adventure game that is well worth the money I spent on it. I haven't came across the first one yet so I'm a bit behind on some of the references Justice for All makes about the first game. I just finished the second chapter and am on the case about Max Galaxian (sp?). I'm stuck gathering enough evidence to move on, but not stuck enough yet to turn to a FAQ.

If you don't like it, then don't participate in it, I really don't see what the issue is. I don't post in the wrestling thread on the Off Topic forum, I think wrestling in is pointless and boring (I'm a UFC guy), but I don't go on there telling them to stop posting because I don't like to watch wrestling.

I find it interesting to see what others are playing, topics like these can sometimes result in interesting conversations, or just might get you interested in a certain game. If it's that big of a problem, then go start your own popular message board and have everyone abide by your own rules. Otherwise, chill out and let it be.

I would imagine that those who play NBA Live do so because they enjoy it and don't feel it's crap like you do. Very few people will put significant time into a game they dislike, so nobody is really wasting any time.

I do find, however, that playing a poor game now and then, even for a short time, offers perspective on things and allows me to greater appreciate games that are truly good. Of course, maybe that's just the reviewer side of me speaking. But I do think it's good for everyone to branch out and take a shot in the dark now and then. If you only play games that everybody else regards as classics, you may end up playing a lot of great games, but I can guarantee you that you'll also miss out on some fantastic games that slip under the radar. Many of my very favorite games, like Tail Concerto, Wonder Project J and J2, Dragon Spirit, Marvelous, and others, are all obscure and almost never get mentioned by anyone, and I can also tell you that I enjoy those games MORE than most games that get all the attention from gamers. Take Super Mario Sunshine, the game I'm currently playing, for example. I'm really enjoying it, but I like Super Mario 64 better. However, when I look at all the platformers on N64, I like Goemon's Great Adventure even more than Super Mario 64, despite how little attention the game gets.

I'm up to 116 Shines in Super Mario Sunshine on GameCube now, and I'm getting to the point where I'm not playing the game as much. The four Shines I still need are two from blue coins (and I'm currently holding 8), the Shine in the plaza from the special stage I need Yoshi to get to, and the Shine for the red coin challenge in the Noki Bay secret stage. How it breaks down is that the Noki Bay secret stage is the toughest, most insane secret stage in the whole game, red coin challenge or otherwise, I'm still reluctant to get Yoshi back to the other stage and start blowing through lives trying collect all the red coins while staying out of the damn poison water, and the blue coins are starting to grind to a halt because in four stages I've collected 29 coins and can't for the life of me figure out what's the last one I'm missing in each and the other 8 coins are from Noki Bay where I can't find squat anymore. Now I'm kinda waiting for an opportunity to pick up some new printer ink cartridges so I can actually print out an FAQ on the blue coins and cross off what I've gotten, and I'm also considering buying a strategy guide. Regardless, I gotta stop being scared of those secret stages and just try to power my way through them.

That entire post I made was a joke (note the games I was "playing"). I agree with what you say about obscure games sometimes being more fun. I find new stuff like Odin Sphere far more appealing than new Zelda and Mario games. In fact, I played Super Mario Sunshine for a few hours and got bored. I haven't played any 3D Zelda games since Ocarina of Time (I think I'm the only person in the world who hated that game).

However, the NBA Live series is terrible no matter how you shake it, and I really hope no one chooses it over the far superior 2K series. And apparently EA is once again trying to force us to do that by trying to acquire the license to produce all NBA games, similar to what they did with the NFL license. The lack of competition has led to a complete lack of innovation to the Madden series. EA can just pump out the same game every year with roster updates and a few minor improvements. The NBA Live series is bad enough as it is, so that'd be a sure-fire way to make it even worse.

Lol, no that wasn't why I brought up NBA Live. But first off, let me apologize for being a douche bag in this topic before. Second, let me respond to this. The reason I mentioned NBA Live is because it is and probably will always remain my most hated franchise in video game history. So it's just the first game I always use when thinking of the shittiest game possible. For starters, it's just a terrible basketball game and has been for years. To make matters worse, it sells millions every year anyways. This is probably due to good marketing from EA and the reputation the game has in the urban markets. To inner city kids it's all Live and Madden. Fortunately, Madden plays a good game of football, even if it is almost the same game every year. On the other hand Live is the same game every year, but it's complete crap. Now I could live with this because there are plenty of bad sports game out there, but what annoys me is that Live is the only sports franchise that sucks every year and people will still buy. But making matters worse is that unlike Madden, which is the only football game available, Live has some very stiff competition from the 2K series. The 2K series is a very good basketball game that makes Live look like an NBDL game, instead of an NBA game. Nonetheless, dumb consumers still purpose tons more copies of Live each year.

When searching sales rankings on Amazon during the basketball season last year, 2K had a very slight edge over Live for Xbox 360 owners (both were within a few numbers of each other on the sales ranks). But with the people who bought it for the PS2 (which tends to be more urban gamers with only one console), the Live series was at like sales rank #200 and 2K was at like #1000. Conclusion: urban gamers are dumb and easily swayed by marketing and word-of-mouth. Yes it's not scientific, but even from personal experience the only games I ever hear come out the mouths of kids in my city are "Madden" and "Live".

I know this is all off-topic, but that's my vent on why I brought up the Live series. Your situation was slightly different because you bought an old copy of the game for a $1. However, I will say that I think anyone is crazy if they choose Live over 2K when buying a new $60 version of the game, and any serious sports fan will probably tell you the same. All that being said... you seem to be enjoying Live right now, which is understandable since you probably don't have high expectations for a $1 game. But I'm curious (and I don't mean this to be offensive if it comes off like that), are you familiar with the 2K series, and if you were buying one of the two now would you still buy Live? Sorry for all the ranting, but sports are my favorite genre too, so I'm passionately against EA's handling of many of their franchises. Madden I can at least put up with because it's good each year, even if repetitive, but Live is a whole different story.

I haven't bought a sports game the same year it came out since the Sega Genesis days. I always buy them a few years after they come out and I usually get them used, though sometimes I'll buy new copies if they are still on a rack for a good price. Over the past few months, I picked up most of the 2004-2005 sports games for XBox and PS2. Since I am only paying a dollar or two for most of the used sports games I grab, I end up getting all of the games that came out during that year. So I've always gotten both EA and 2K games, albeit a few years old.

Sure I like the 2K games better but sometimes I like having a bunch of franchises/seasons going at the same time which is where NBA Live 2004 comes in. I have a bunch of different teams going on simultaneously. It seems silly but I have ESPN NBA 2K5 going through a Franchise mode with the regular Celtics roster from that game, the one they started the season with in real life. So that one is more realistic. In NBA Live 2004, I have another Celtics franchise in progress but that roster was created through the fantasy draft. That roster has a ton of players I like who never played for the Celtics or were on the team a year or two before/after the game came out. In NBA Inside Drive 2004, I have it in franchise mode and am using a Celtics roster which includes a few players I traded for and one or two players I created. In that game, I get to tear down the court with my 350 lb, 7 foot plus center, who is named after me, and dunk the ball like crazy.

Keep in mind I don't play too many RPG's, adventure games, shooters, online games, first person shooters or fighting games that you invest hundreds of hours into. I'm a sports stat freak and am always watching a game on tv so I love throwing most of my gaming hours into loooooong franchise modes and try to keep my teams/players successful year after year.

That's actually a pretty good system, considering 2 things: 1) sports games lose their resale value faster than any other genre so you can get them for next to nothing after a couple year, and 2) sports games tend to be very similar from year to year so you're usually not missing out on too much (NBA 2K series included). And there's only two major drawbacks I can think of: 1) rosters, especially in basketball and baseball, are very outdated (however, once you play a few years in franchise mode the roster is completely different anyways) and 2) barely anyone is available for online play because they have moved on to newer editions. To me, those are important factors but I can see why you are easily able to overlook them.

I do something slightly different-- rather than buy older sports games, I buy a game at full price right when it comes out and then play it for years. Only last season did I finally replace Madden 2002 with Madden 2007. The last baseball game I bought was in 2003, and haven't found a reason to replace it yet.

I'm very similar. Along with sports games, RPGs are my other favorite genre. And I notice that sometimes my favorite part of sports games are actually the RPG elements. When I play in a game I'm usually working on individual players to get their ratings up. And my favorite part of sports games are the off-season when I get to see how much ratings went up, get to make trades, pick up free agents, etc. All the GM-related duties. Perhaps I'd enjoy the games themselves more if I had more human competition, but against the computer I'm usually very good so I get more concentrated on stats. This will be the first Madden season that I have Xbox Live, so I will probably end up buying Madden 08 for 360 just to try out the online competition.

Good Going..

I'd like to pick this game up soon..I think I'd have a blast playing it with my Son..

Unfortunately it isn't a good game at all, terrible camera, frustrating jumping and boring combat. And you couldnt play it with your son anyway because there is no form of multiplayer at all which seems almost criminal in a TMNT game. Only one turtle can be on screen at once which is really lame.

Last night..

360 Fear..
I can't get my character to stop moving too far,no matter how I change the settings..
He moves goofy thus preventing me from any stealth..
I hope it's not my controller that's shot..
Since I moved my couch way back away from the TV I can't see the game well anymore..I either need to buy a Big TV or one of those Gaming chairs.

I got rid of my Tekken 3 cab today(monitor, coin door is for sale.... and the PCB etc is on ebay)
I had moved my cabs around..My Two big reds are in my living room,My Candy cab in my kitchen,The Klax and Neo Gold woodgrain cab are now in my bedroom..

I fired up the two big red and played League Bowling with my Son...Then like 20 minutes of Strikers 1945 ..
I don't play my cabs enough but with the loss of one I have the desire to do so now..

My Son walking in away in disgust after losing to me in League Bowling.ROFL

After a few days of not playing anything at all, I'm now tackling the last bit of Super Mario Sunshine since I printed out an FAQ on the blue coins, and I'm also waiting on the official Nintendo Power strategy guide to arrive from an eBay purchase (it was more expensive than the guides from Bradygames, Prima, and Versus, but I always prefer Nintendo Power guides). So right now I'm up to 118 Shines, and I was able to locate the last missing blue coin I had in four stages. I also acquired four more coins in Noki Bay, but I still have four more to go there and because of the layout of the stage it's difficult to figure out where the missing ones are from the FAQ. I think the guide will have to help me out on those. I also got the Shine from the poison water stage in the plaza. It was a little annoying to get Yoshi back to the island, but once I did that I got the Shine from the poison river on my first life. What really helped was reading that I could hover to the edge of the river and walk back to the beginning to get on a new lilypad. That didn't remove the challenge, but not stressing about collecting every red coin in one go made all the difference. Other than the last blue coin Shine I need, I still need the Shine from the red coin challenge in Noki Bay's secret stage, so that area is the only place I have to worry about now.

GCN Beyond Good & Evil - finished up the game after photographing every animal, and collecting every pearl and Mdisk. This game is begging for a sequel.

GCN Fight Night: Round 2 - haven't really tried this since I've been pre-occupied with playing Super Punch Out (also on the same disc). I had forgotten how much fun that game is...

Fear 360-late at night with the lights out and headphones on,.

The game is keeping me intersted and admittingly I get a scare here and there when the spooky parts pop up.
It's just the wanding around, lost sometimes(no action) that makes me want to put down the controller..

I haven't played any Super Mario Sunshine since my last post, but I did try out X-Men on Genesis with an Asciiware 3-button arcade stick I bought. It wasn't the wisest decision, though. o_O It doesn't work so well for games that use the C-button more than anything else because, assuming you don't move your fingers around, you ended up constantly just using your ring finger, and, for me at least, it made my hand kinda cramp up and hurt.

I love Shining in the Darkness. Never finished it when I was younger, went back and played through it in about 3 nights back in February or so.

Currently playing Shining Force CD. Loving every minute of it. Also playing a lot of Tetris, practicing for whenever I get a hold of an NWC repro :)

I went to the Wunderland in Milwaukie with some friends today. It's an arcade/second-run movie place that mostly consists of newer games and ticket-redemption games, and every game takes a certain number of nickels. It's in a theater that used to have three auditoriums, but one was converted into an arcade area.

Here's the arcade games I played:

-Arkanoid
-Pinball Action
These were from a MAME cab that had a lot of games on it. It was nice to see one of these there instead of just another Ms. Pac-Man/Galaga cab that most modern arcades limit their classic selection to.

-Rail Chase 2
-Battle Gear 2

Beyond that, I mostly played Skee-Ball.

Finally actually playing some games again. Dunno why I haven't been very much lately, just been busy with other stuff I suppose... can't figure out what stuff but oh well.

PS2 - OutRun 2006 Coast 2 Coast

After finally coming across a copy of this game I can't stop playing it, just wish there would be some people online occasionally to play against. Still great fun.

VCS - Circus Atari
VCS - Super Breakout

A copy of Circus Atari was in the lot with the heavy sixer I picked up last week. I've always liked the game, always have had a copy too, but I forgot how much fun it is. I wasted away over two hours in some kind of strange daze playing. Also had my bi-weekly session of Super Breakout.

Colecovision - Venture

Just a few minutes playing the CV classic. I was humming music from the game and figured I'd show my girlfriend I wasn't completely senile by running through a few rounds to prove it wasn't just in my head. LOL

GBC - Project S-11

Flea market pickup that's actually a cool little vertical shooter. Been up halfway through stage three before having to leave for work yesterday.

Arkanoid is still one of my favorites by taito beside being, the best breakout clone out there.

I play it in mame once in a while on the pc.

Kind of a shame it wasn't on Taito Legends 1 or 2 :(

One of my good friends has gotten hooked on this game to the point where he wants his own copy. He really is good with 18. Me, I've been unlocking different costume colors and alternate costumes.

-Capcom Classics Collection Vol. 1-
Got in some Final Fight Action. Beat the game using Cody. Never realized how good he was until now. Of course I'll be a Guy fan for life.

I played through the first mako reactor area in Final Fantasy VII on PlayStation just to make sure the disc was working. Anyone who's seen my review on my site or GameFAQs would know I'm not a fan of the game at all, but I've had this loose disc 1 (in addition to my complete Greatest Hits misprint) kicking around for years and I figure it's time to sell it. I got it among a bunch of other PlayStation discs in a CD wallet for 5 bucks at a garage sale, and at the time it was a fair deal but now it's much better considering how much you can get on eBay even for one single loose disc (what I'm going to do with disc 2 and 3 of Final Fantasy VIII, I have no idea). I played it for so long because I really wasn't sure it would work okay since it does have a lot of fine scratches, but everything seemed to work without a hitch (I think it was the FF8 discs that had issues).

What's kinda funny about it is that right about the same time I landed a good deal on a legit copy of the soundtrack. I was kinda embarrassed to tell my boyfriend (he's not a fan of the game either), and he made a face once I spilled the beans. :P Both of us agree that there are some good tracks on it, though, even if plenty of others are mediocre or downright bad. I'll have to give it a listen from beginning to end to see if the good outweighs the bad and if my negative associations don't ruin it (eventually my memories of playing Chrono Cross became distant enough to start to appreciate that soundtrack for what it is). If worse comes to worse, I could probably sell it for more than I paid.
