Netherworld: Beyond Time I Stand - Found this at Big Lots for $4, it was released in 2009 and there's almost no information about it besides a thread on the IGN forums. So far it seems like a pretty decent action/adventure game, the biggest problem I see so far is that the map is confusing as fuck, leaving you to guess where you are at times due to it being a little off.

I'm also playing Zelda: Majora's Mask (hopefully I'll beat it this time), 3D Dots Heroes and Assassins Creed: Brotherhood.

Heavy Rain.

Started playing this yesterday starting at 1am for around four hours. I really liked the first three fourths of Indigo Prophecy, while the last fourth took a plunge when it came to a good storyline. Heavy Rain is in many ways the better game. Sure it's nothing more than an interactive movie, but this is much better than any recent movie I've seen to date. You feel so much more attached to the characters because you're right there controlling the characters.

I can say that I probably won't play it too many times in my entire life as you're not going to see much else once you complete the storyline. The game is definitely a rental for those who are interested and don't want to purchase it as it's definitely a really great experience.

I'm doing some ADHD gaming on my new 40" LCD. Yesterday I played Splatterhouse on TG16, Space Harrier on Master System, Golden Axe Beast Rider on 360, Sonic Adventure on 360 and XO: Wolverine on the HTPC.

Today I intend to play some Gears of War on the HTPC, along with some Batman: Arkham Asylum and Transformers War for Cybertron. Oh, and I just snagged Chronicles of Riddick on Steam $5, I'll probably give that a shot even though I don't much care for modern FPS.

I also still need to play some games I bought last month, specifically Midnight Raiders on Sega CD.

I haven't done much gaming lately due to Magfest and having a friend over (despite that for many people that would means loads of gaming).

I did get some imports, though, and I ended up playing through the whole story mode in Goemon: Mononoke Sugoroku for Nintendo 64. As I'm sure I've stated before, I'll buy just about any N64 game that's Japan-exclusive (minus sports, shogi, mahjong, and pachinko), but I was particularly eager to pick up this third Goemon game. Sure, I would've rather had another platformer or adventure game, but I really can't complain because this is a great game too. It's basically like Culdcept in being a card battle game with a board game format, except it's even more fun for having the Goemon theme and music. It really was a no brainer because the Goemon series is loaded with wacky, cool Japanese monsters. I'm really impressed with the graphics too. These have to be the sharpest pre-rendered backgrounds I've ever seen on N64, and all the 2D art is great. 3D is tastefully used as well for the great card animations and damage effects. Konami did great things with the N64 when they put in the effort. It's just a shame that practically no ones knows of or appreciates this game.

Other than Goemon, I popped CosmoWarrior Zero and Shin Nippon Pro Wrestling: Toukon Retsuden into my Japanese PlayStation 2 and RC Helicopter into my PlayStation.

I reorganized my game room a bit, and as I moved stuff back, my eyes fell upon my Dreamcast fishing controller. So I've been playing more Sega Bass Fishing than I had for many years. I just placed 3rd in the 5-stage amateur competition and got invited to the Challenge. I mostly use the spinning crank bait - don't have as much success with any of the others. Biggest bass I caught so far was rated "Huge" and was 20 lbs.

Started Mobile Suit Gundam Battlefield Record 0081. After about five missions I had to turn it off. This is a pretty poor game with really nothing going for other than decent graphics and being a Gundam game. It's not as bad as Gundam Crossfire, though.

Put in Resonance of Fate and installed the game afterwards but didn't start it up.

I was in the mood for a 32/64-bit era 3D platformer, and while I was leaning toward N64, my options are pretty slim as far as 3D N64 platformers that I own but haven't played yet go. So given that, I picked Spyro the Dragon for PlayStation. I've never played any of the Spyro games besides a quick try, so I figured it was time, especially since I was fairly pleased with what I had tried out in the past. I'm now at 75% completion, having just entered the Dream Weavers world and 100% completing the previous worlds. Tree Tops was a mega pain to 100%, but it's mostly been smooth sailing. I wouldn't really say the game is a "classic" since the level design and overall concept of the game doesn't strike me as particularly inspired, not in the same kind of memorable way as a Nintendo or Rare platformer. But, nonetheless, it's definitely a solid example of a 3D platformer of that era. Now if only the music didn't SUCK.

Resonance of Fate is unfortunately another garbage game. It's not unplayable, but where is the gameplay? I'll play as much as I can before until I get too bored of it which I see as being very soon.

Your options in battle are to either attack, use an item, or attack with a different ammo type and that's about it. You can use a hero action to run across the screen while attacking enemies and do a bonus hit or smackdown, and you have a special that you can acquire where all three characters will run around doing and attacking at the same time. That's all there is to the game and all this can be done in the very first battle.

After I finish this game this is definitely one that is going to be sold. Better than Final Fantasy 13, but that's really not saying much as it still sucks.

I finished off Spyro the Dragon on PlayStation today, getting the full 120% (with no outside help too). Talk about a lackluster, anticlimactic final battle. Not that I was expecting theatrics since the previous boss battles were against guys that I thought were normal enemies at first since they were so tiny, easy, and had no boss music. And speaking of the music again, I was surprised to learn that the composer, Stewart Copeland, was the drummer for The Police. Not that I'm a fan of The Police either, but I would think someone that notable would make music more interesting and engaging than this. Although I wasn't as shocked about that as I was to learn that so many players actually adore this crappy music, but, then again, it seems like they're the same people that have extreme nostalgia for Spyro. The diehard Spyro fan base is a weird, weird bunch, but maybe that goes along with the fact that most of them are furries too (which you'd have to be to love those modern Spyro games). Anyway, it was still a good experience playing through the first Spyro the Dragon. Nothing remarkable but still fun.

I decided to begin a goal that I've had on my mind for some time now, and that's to play more Zelda games. I've only beaten three in the past, so I'm trying to at least fill in the gaps I have prior to Majora's Mask (I haven't beaten ANY Zelda post-OoT, so those can be worked on down the road). Well, if you do the math, my "gaps" are only two games, haha, but I'm starting with the earlier of the two and playing Zelda II: The Adventure of Link on NES. Maybe part of it is because I breezed through Spyro the Dragon so easily, but I'm finding this game very hard. Those who have played it a bajillion times would probably laugh at that, but I'd be surprised if other first-timers didn't have a tough time. I've gotten several Game Overs, but it seems to be getting easier as I go along. Like in Metroid, you're pretty helpless at the beginning, but once you find some items/abilities, power up your character a little, and get a handle on the feel, it becomes a smoother experience, despite that the enemies do ratchet up in difficulty. Still a tense game to play, though, especially in comparison to other Zelda games that are quite relaxed. I often find myself saying "Oh shit, I'm scared!" and retreating for a bit when a knight appears, haha. Anyway, I've completed three palaces so far and am ready to start the fourth.

Also, I forgot to mention in my previous post that I tried out some more PC-FX games I imported: Battle Heat, Angelique Special 2, and Tenchi Muyo! Ryououki FX. Only Battle Heat is worth giving much of a damn about, but being PC-FX games makes them automatic wants, haha.

I didn't get an opportunity to play anything this weekend, but I just finished the last normal dungeon in Zelda II on NES. I've heard a lot of horror stories about the final dungeon, but, if worse comes to worst, at least I have a couple extra lives I could pick up on the map. Before I tackle that, though, I think I'll take the time out to get my last level up by fighting tektites.

Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3.

Coming off from playing Raging Blast, and starting off on hard mode... and got my ass handed to me because the advanced controls are so different. After going through training once, I played through hard mode on the Saiyan Saga without taking a loss. Now as soon as I play Raging Blast again I'll have to learn those controls over again, I'm sure.

Really a much better game than Raging Blast. So many more types of advanced techniques to pull off, the speed of the gameplay is probably twice as fast, how closely the fight scenes replicate the storyline, etc. If there's a Raging Blast 3, hopefully Namco Bandai makes it as good as this and stops going backwards. Just another reason why this gen isn't as good as the last.

I posted about it awhile ago in the games beaten topic, but I finished off Zelda II: The Adventure of Link on NES.

I haven't seriously started up anything since then, but since I came down with the flu last weekend, I was stuck in bed and pulled out the old Game Boy Advance SP for the first time in quite awhile. I had no prior intention of playing it any time soon, but I ended up playing through all of the first Dragon Warrior via the Dragon Warrior I & II Game Boy Color compilation. I also pulled out all the maps and such that I have from the NES version, which were pretty helpful even if a couple of the dungeons had significant redesigns. I played through the NES game for the first time a little over ten years ago, back when I was first recovering my gaming childhood and taking my first steps into buying used games and collecting. In fact, I think Dragon Warrior was the first complete NES game I acquired (not that I have many), and I believe it was also in the very first batch of NES games I bought, before I had even tracked down a system. This version was definitely a quicker play than the original. I barely had to do any grinding at all. And replaying the game also reinforced my belief that I'd rather play through the first Dragon Warrior than the first Final Fantasy. As much flack as Dragon Warrior gets for being "unplayable" these days, it still at least has some charm. Rescuing the princess half way through the game and carrying her all the way back always puts a smile on my face. The game also knows itself. It makes no bones about being a small, straightforward adventure, purely focused on the exploration and mastery over its little world. It does get boring after awhile, but it's enjoyable for its purity for some time.

This weekend I ordered an S-Video cable and Pro Action 4M Replay for my (model 1) Sega Saturn, and the package arrived today. I'm really looking forward to putting the Replay through the motions, especially if and when I can get my desktop computer working (I destroyed the power supply last night - BOOM!) and burn the Capcom 4Meg Saturng games that are sitting on my hard drive.

I also ordered an AV cable for a Genesis that I picked up last week. It's a model 1, but without the "high definition graphics" text at top. I haven't managed to actually use this Genesis, because my television, a 36" Sony Wega CRT HDTV, is on the fritz (it's a common IC fuse problem common to Sony sets), so I'm looking forward to finally playing with real controllers and real cartridges. I sold my Sega Genesis and Super NES way back in 1995 as a trade-in for a Sega Saturn.

So what am I playing right now? Street Fighter Alpha 2 on Saturn is always a kick, and the S-Video cable provides a very sharp picture (it will look spectacular on the Sony). I'm playing a lot of the NHL Hockey and John Madden Football games on Genesis (Gens emulator). I'm in the middle of a Madden '92 playoff run with the Bears, in fact, and I'm absolutely loving the game. Am I wrong to believe Madden '92 was the series' best on Genesis?

Oh, and one of these days, I must get back to my railroad project in Minecraft. But I need more "liquid courage" to take on the Zombies and Creepers in the caves. Those guys scare the hell out of me, hah!

I don't have the first game of the series but I have the others. I'm not familiar yet with the bonus games so I did poorly on that but I did okay on the others. One thing I disliked was the sound quality. I'm still on my Madden '92 kick, and desperately trying to find anything about Park Place Productions on the internet. There's vanishingly little information about the studio. There is an interview with Michael Knox at Sega-16 (always a favorite site), but the man was spinning one b.s. tall tale after another. There's quite a lot of dishonesty regarding Park Place and its two top men, in fact, and that's something of a surprise.

I probably wouldn't care one way or another, but there is something special about the early Madden and NHL games that were really never captured by later studios. I'd still like to know why EA severed ties with Park Place in the first place. It's interesting that Madden '93 was handled by a different studio, Looking Glass Technologies, with Mark Lesser in charge of programming (instead of Jim Simmons), but the game engine was left mostly untouched from Madden '92. It's mostly a few slight tweaks to make the game harder and more balanced...oh, and they wouldn't let the ambulance run over the players anymore :P

Does anybody know the greater story? Park Place later created Konami's NFL Football on the Super NES in 1993, but the company went backrupt by the end of the year. It's been suggested the employees migrated to Sony Imagesoft and worked on the ESPN sports games, and then returned with a vengeance with Gameday on the Playstation in 1995.

Michael Knox died in 2009 from cancer, and Troy Lindon became CEO of Left Behind Games, another company with some dubious and controversial connections. But that's another story entirely. Anyway....back to Madden '92!

Just started Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX.

Decided to bust out my Gameboy SP and discovered I must have bought some really sweet GB/GBC/GBA games at rummage sales and forgotten about them.

Just started Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX.I've tried to like this game, but for me, it's just a pain in the ass.

Phantasy Star Portable 2:Finshed story mode but still leveling and other side quest to do.
Ys Chronicles:The tweaks in the remake make it different enough from the original.

Towards what Aussie2B said. All enemies on Dragon Warrior GBC give you double exp and double gp making it much more bearable than the NES version.

Yeah, I could tell. But I still think the original is playable. The need to grind and the time it takes just serves to make the game more epic and provides greater satisfaction when you finally earn a level up. It can be grueling, no doubt, but it's fun with the right mindset.

Since leveling up is so easy in the Game Boy Color version of Dragon Warrior, I leveled all the way to 30, the max, just for the heck of it.

Anyway, I forgot to mention that I also played some cooperative Donkey Kong Country via emulation when I was sick. Since getting better, I still haven't started anything, partially because I'm busy with a lot of Nintendo 64 games I bought. I got several dupes in it, so I've been cleaning and testing those before I sell them off. So far I've tested Star Fox 64, Mischief Makers, Vigilante 8, Wave Race 64, Milo's Astro Lanes, Forsaken 64, and NASCAR 99. Man, I freakin' love Wave Race 64, what an amazing game. The water effects still look fantastic, the music is awesome, and the announcer makes me feel so good about myself, haha. I don't know why I've never sat down to play through everything in the game. So far I've only dabbled in it. I definitely need to devote some time to it someday.

I've been on a spree of playing games I already played before while recording the footage all year now. I'm only playing the ones I have CIB copies of this time through and buying games as I come to holes in the series.

I just brought Mario through a 100% run of Super Mario 64 on Nintendo 64 this early AM so he's good for a while till the GameCube comes back out.

The next Nintendo 64 game I will be ready for is Zelda: Ocarina of Time, but I am thinking some early Playstation games will make it to me first because they came out sooner. Or maybe not, Zelda is shorter than these games I am planning on.

Beyond the Beyond and Suikoden will be the first couple of Playstation RPGs that I will complete for sure because I have done them before 11 and 7 times respectively. A copy of the Japanese exclusive original King's Field is on the way so at some point while these two familiar RPGs are worked on, I will work at this game for the first time not on an emulator. I don't expect to beat it for a long time because it's in Japanese but it will be fun to explore as much as possible until I can't stand it and use a guide.

If I need a fighting game fix anywhere in there I'll play some of the Japanese release of Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Battle 22 in build up mode. Make a file for each of the 27 characters and you'd be playing for months. Crash Bandicoot (1) needs to be completed for the first time as well somewhere in the mess.

Another factor that may change the direction of things is that Donkey Kong Country 2 is on the way, and I already have Donkey Kong Land 2. So I may get both of those quickies out of the way as soon as it arrives so I'll be ready to buy both Country 3 and Land 3.

PS3
- Killzone 3 -- rented to play through the story mode which did not dissapoint...time to return it.
- Red Dead Redemption -- this has been my main game the past couple days. loving it!
- Marvel vs Capcom 3 -- play a few matches with some friends from time to time

PSP
- Tactics Ogre -- near the end of chapter 3....very happy with this rendition so far.

.....and, assorted 2600 and 7800 games: tested and got into like 50-60+ games after purchasing a lot off craigs and getting much needed controllers to play these games. I had been doing that the past couple of days but my Atari strak has ended for now.

More cleaning and testing of Nintendo 64 games for me. I played a little of Xena Warrior Princess: The Talisman of Fate, Mischief Makers, Extreme-G, Nightmare Creatures, Major League Baseball Featuring Ken Griffey Jr., Buck Bumble, and Bomberman Hero. Besides some of the games being bad themselves, my playing was a little soured by getting a little bit of a headache and nausea, I think from Extreme-G. :/ I've already owned the sequel for awhile, and I believe the sequel had the same effect on me. I was hoping the first game would be simpler and less choppy but no such luck. No wonder the Extreme-G games have been forgotten while F-Zero X and WipeOut 64 are still highly appreciated. Probe sure was responsible for a lot of shitty games.

Been mostly playing DeathSmiles on the Xbox 360 since its PAL release. Hadn't played it in a week though and was surprised yesterday to find I hadn't dropped down the leaderboards - still 5th on DeathSmiles and 3rd on Mega Black Label. Its worth noting though that the PAL leaderboards are separate from the NA and JPN ones, and the scores are much much lower.

But today and yesteday, I've dug out the retro for the first time in months:

Manx TT SuperBike on the Sega Saturn.
Wanted some blue skies Sega fun. It delivered. And I did, too, eventually. Spent all evening playing and eventually placed 1st on both arcade tracks. Was hard work but I definitely improved a lot. Even used manual gears for the 1st track but on the 2nd track felt they distracted too much from my steering which was more important. It really is all about carrying momentum through. One corner you can reach at either 160 or 190 MPH depending on how you did the previous ones.

Mr. Heli on the PC Engine
Tried out one of the few PC Engine games I've yet to try. Was surprised to find it wasn't simply just a standard horizontal shooter. I enjoyed it. Probably wont return for a while. Plus I suck at it.

Tokimeki Memorial ~forever with you~ on the Sega Saturn
Now this was a surprising one. I can't understand Japanese, but I played through all three years of this in one sitting. I've also never played a Japanese dating sim before and didn't read up anything about this one until after I failed. Firstly the design looked very old but then the appeal grew. After a year or two all the girls grew to hate me so I just built up my stats, which was compulsive. Its a shame that it all fell apart though, lack of being able to read Japanese to make the correct choices or even knowing the system of the game probably didn't help. I'm tempted to try again one day though, hopefully I can find some more stuff translated to help...
