That game is awesome, but for whatever reason I never got into it during the NES days. Saw it played a few times but didn't really play it myself. Now I own a copy but haven't gone very far into it. Someday...
Mostly it's just a matter of being willing to spend an afternoon/evening or two on it, and make maps....or, well, there are plenty of walkthroughs and good maps out there if you're feeling lazy, but I don't think somebody who plays Wizardry has anything against making his own map :)
The way Wizardry handles death makes it pretty hard, but I love that about it. It makes the game more intense when you have genuine fear about your characters getting killed. At minimum, it will cost a lot of money, or at worst you may lose him permanently.
The PS2 game actually tones that down too much, but it's still a great game.
Played any roguelikes? Nethack, Incursion, etc for computer, or the various console ones like Shiren the Wanderer? Hardcore death handling that makes Wizardry seem forgiving (!), and even harder with the issues of identifying items, generally being only one character, and randomized dungeons...

I'm in the exact same spot. I'm enjoying it quite a bit. There has been times where I've gotten sick of the random battles in certain areas (seems like the encounter rate is higher in some places), but I've just put the game down for a little. I don't know, but it's more fun (to me) to play a game after a little absense (even if it's only a couple days).
Are you playing Final Fantasy II for the first time too? That would be a pretty funny coincidence.
I'm up to the moon now, and I got my ass handed to me by Bahamut. But at least I gained enough levels in his cave that I was able to finally beat Odin.
I also played some more Street Fighter II on Super Nintendo. I've beaten the game on the easiest difficulty with half of the cast now (big whoop, I know). What's kind of sad and pathetic is that even though I was playing on the easiest difficulty, it still took me around a dozen attempts before I could beat Bison (well, Vega since I'm playing the Super Famicom version) with Chun Li. Yet I can beat him on the first try no sweat with Ryu and Ken. But that was probably my first time ever trying to seriously use Chun Li, so I guess that's why.

Started playing Dissidia Final Fantasy again because my friend started getting into it.
I got everyone back together on Chrono Trigger Crimson Echoes. Man, I honestly haven't noticed many bugs in the game. There was one dungeon that I've noticed that looks sortof buggy but I think it was created to look that way. There's been a few errors in grammar and a few lines that make the characters seem immature or throwing out curse words just to have it in the game(which isn't much and the times it happened it honestly brings the game down rather than helps it.) Other than that this is an extremely solid game for something made by fans(more fun than most of the games I've played recently.)

Yeah, it's my first time too. I'm hoping to finish the sealed cave today. Do you plan on going to III (SNES) after?
Not right away, but my plan is to get to it sooner or later. I've been in a routine in which I play one Final Fantasy every summer, in numerical order. So in all likelihood, I'll be playing V next summer (probably the PlayStation port) and then III on SNES the following. I'm not really planning on doing all of them, though. I'm definitely not going past IX (I don't even own any of the later games, for one), but I may just stopped at VI given that I've already beaten VII in the past and I only really want to cover the ones regarded as classics.
Anyway, after eliminating the Giant on Earth, I'm back on the moon, with the final party, and I assume all that lays ahead of me is the final dungeon. I've really been taking my time with the game the last few days, barely playing it.
Instead, I've been playing more of my Super Famicom Street Fighter II. I've beaten difficulty levels 0 and 1 with all characters, so now I just have to clear 2 and I can start attempting to earn endings.

Same here. I'm saved in the final "dungeon," but haven't played it in 3-4 days. The only FF games I have played are the original and this one. I only plan on playing III for the SNES, and 7, 8, 9 for playstation. Not all in a row though...

I'm hooked on Prinny: Can I Really Be The Hero for PSP. It's one of those platformers with shitty controls(imagine playing Super Mario Bros. and the D-Pad sticks doing a running jump) and extreme difficulty, but yet I find that I cannot put it down. It's funny, but it requires a lot of patience.

No, never played any of those, but that sounds quite difficult. I don't mind being punished for death, but if you only get 1 character that sounds like you'd basically have to start over... more than I'd be willing to deal with. :)
The hardest RPG I ever tried to play was "Alternate Reality: The City" for the Atari 800 (played in an emulator). I read some people talking about it in a forum and it sounded pretty cool. But I don't know how anybody gets anywhere in that game - it's impossible to survive.

It's not really shitty controls. If you're used to Castlevania it plays just fine. The Castlevania games had, realistic and not shitty controls.
Yes Simon Belmont can jump his own height, but when jumping, you cannot change the direction of your jump. If you were to jump in real life this would be the exact same thing.
People don't complain about Devil May Cry when Dante makes a forward jump and can't change direction mid jump. The Wanderer in Shadow of the Colossus, etc, etc, etc. These games are 3d and people take it in that perspective that since it's 2d and the majority of 2d games allow you to move mid jump that it's shitty control by not allowing this on all 2d games.

Anyways, I've been playing Dissidia through Ad-hoc party. If you're playing someone in the US then you're going to have almost no lag whatsoever. Play anyone in Japan or somewhere across seas, the lag will easily noticable.
It's always fun playing someone you personally know and beating them in the game, but at the same time not so fun when you end up playing a character that they use and who has less attacks and abilities because they whine like a bitch how you're better as the character that you main than they are with theirs(I main Cecil, but play as Cloud, Garland, and Warrior of Light.)

I finished off Final Fantasy IV. The ending was soooo long!
Heh, you beat me to it. I'm still crawling around the Lunar Subterrane since I went around a week without touching the game.
Instead, I spent the weekend at a friend's house and played some of my Game Boy Advance SP over there. What's funny is that I thought I had the right enemy drop in Magi Nation to get past the part I was stuck on, but it turns out I STILL didn't. I swear, I must've spent hours trying to get this stupid thing. It's like, take an RPG which has a really rare battle drop and make that a required part of the game to progress. It's ridiculous. After many, many battles, I think I've come to the conclusion that the last enemy you defeat usually (always?) determines what, if anything, is dropped, and I had always been killing it right away. Once I saved it for last, then I finally got it and did so again in another battle. I swear, the moronic programming in this game makes me want to hurl my Game Boy at a wall sometimes. I don't know how it has such a good reputation. Nothing is more infuriating than casting a Heal spell that costs 3 HP and having it heal only *2* HP, because it heals a random amount in the range 2-16. Who on earth thought that was a good idea?
I also played some Castlevania: Circle of the Moon, just tinkering with old files. I made a little progress in my half-completed Fighter file, and then I did some more item farming in my normal file. Now I know why I got fed up with collecting 99 of everything since collecting the Sage Robe is so tedious. I can play for 30+ minutes and still only add 3 more to the total. But since I haven't played the game in years, it's still fun messing around.
Once I got back home, I got back into my Super Famicom Street Fighter II. I beat it with everybody on difficulty 2, so I'm finally ready to play on the normal difficulty and get some endings. I've noticed a significant jump in difficulty, though, and (Spanish) Balrog is giving me a lot of trouble now, even more so than Vega.
And finally, I tried out a bunch of both new and old purchases for the first time. For NES I tried: Gun-Nac, Eliminator Boat Duel, Monopoly, Captain America and the Avengers, Terminator 2, Bionic Commando, Wall Street Kid, and Battle of Olympus. Then on DS I tried Advance Wars: Days of Ruin and Bangai-O Spirits.

Let me know what you think of the whole game when you're done. I liked it, but VI's story is a ton better so far.
I think I'm going to take a break from FF for a little, and start a new file in Harvest Moon 64. It's probably the most relaxing N64 game there is.

shatterhand (nes). I'm currently on what seems to be the final stage, being forced to refight all the bosses again.
It's pretty good so far. The presentation is definitely impressive for a nes game, you get to choose the order in which to play the levels, and the flying sidekick thing is kind of fun, even though it's not very well balanced. On a negative note I hate the short attack range and some enemies just take forever to kill without some sidekick backup. Kinda breaks the flow of the game.
It still is one of the better action platformers that I've played for the system.
