Mr. Driller - Dreamcast

Still can't beat hard (1000m) but only had a couple goes on it because for the first time ever I decided to check out the other modes. Survival is pointless to me as I can't even crack 1000m but Time Attack - its like a timed puzzle mode! The first set were pretty easy with a bit of figuring out needed but the 2nd set. Ouch, one of them i needed to beat 20 seconds. I was getting 20.12, 20.30 etc so I had the puzzle figured out, it was all down to quick reflexes and man, my hands were hurting from doing it quickly, especially on the Dreamcasts d-pad. I was really wishing I had a stick but I still haven't been willing to splash out the cash either on one of these or a 6-button ascii pad. Either would be great considering the amount of fighters and shooters i seem to be playing

Been playing some Bust-A-Move 2 and Grid Runner. Picked up a few new games the other day and will be testing them out soon. Did manage to put some gameplay into Congo (SAT) and Resident Evil (SAT) last night, but didn't last long because those games are freaking playing in the dark around 5am when your mind is beginning to slip. Le Mans 24 Hours - Dreamcast
The F1 and Top Gear put me in the mood for racing, if only I had PGR2 to play like I could when i lived with a housemate with an xbox. Anyway, I decided to step it up a notch to Expert level. And tried to actually persevere for once. Its such a different game, familiar tracks but you have to drive completely differently, learning different braking points and handling differently. I struggle a lot. During qualifying i'm usually fine, hell, i qualified in 2nd place once, but during the race, what with the other racers and the pressure, i tend to make a stupid mistake or something and one spin and its game over. I'm going to need the time to work on this and learn it all over again. I must have put ridiculous amounts of hours into this game on Intermediate (actually twice, once years ago and once this/last year) and now i'll have to do it all over again

Well I was going to sit down and test out the two Famicom to NES converters I built today from a copies of Hogan's Alley and Pinball I picked up at the flea market this morning but...

...my NES finally died - 19 years or so and it finally croaked. First blinky, then black screen, then static and blinky... So I gave it a cleaning, no use. Replaced the ZIF connector, no better. I was starting to think maybe the 10NES chip inside had popped so I replaced it, no boot. So I figured I'd try the 10NES lockout override mod, no help. :(

I know it's just an NES but it was my NES, my old, good friend. That's why I went through so much to remedy the problem - my assumption after all that is that something internally went awry. So I told myself "David, IC's don't last forever" and realized that my NES had been performing under heavy usage since purchase. Yeah, my 2600 Jr. may continue to outlive it but it never received constant usage like the NES. Especially over the past three years while I was doing massive emulation performance to original cartridge performance comparisons - the NES would be operating for 12-16 hours a day non-stop.

So I cobbled together junk parts from other scrap toasters I've had sitting around for awhile, put them in my old NES shell and now have a half-assed flakey NES until whenever I come across a good solid replacement unit. Even then I'll probably just put the internals in my old NES shell - yeah, I'm odd like that.

Anyway, once I got my hodgepodge NES working I played a quick game of High Speed. Can't honestly test the new Famicom converters since I'm down to flakey ZIF's now that require extremely recessed connectors - in other words a Game Genie - to load games consistantly.

Here are the converters if anyone cares... LOL

Myself today:
Zoo Keeper - DS
Le Mans 24 Hours - Dreamcast

Beat normal mode in Zoo Keeper, by a long way, now only quest mode, urgh, to go. Le Mans 24 Hours has just completely blown me away even more than before. I was struggling on expert so i did a quick race with my favourite car and it all worked. So, trying the first championship again (can't use my fave car here) but switched from the GT2 to the Viper, immediate difference. I've got most of the corners for these 3 tracks completely nailed and can qualify on the front row (never qualified first yet). Its in the race things start to go, but tonight I've had some of the best race experiences I've ever played. The computer AI in this game is astounding and the amount of cars and the tight driving. Just wow. Completely unbelievable, I'm bumping this game up to possibly in my top 5, definetely top10.

Tomb Raider Legend...I dunno, the Wow factor just still hasn't hit me. :/ .I'm not even glued to the story..I'm stuck in some room where I have to electrify the creature flying around and this may be the end of the game so soon..I have no clue what I'm doing wrong so I shelved the game for now.

GRAW..I tried to put a Campaign OXM code in but I can't get it to work..
So I tried Instant action again..I like this mode of the game, but I hate the fact that I can't stick to walls and lean around corners like in the campaign..The soldier moves to sloppy,he often over runs or doesn't stop..I'm a target at all times,I can't hide or poke shots, and no matter what type soldier I use they couldn't hit the side of a barn..It's a shame when you stand right in front of and enemy firing right at him and you don't hit him.....I don't know why they did it this way,it sucks..
I got a bit father in the instant action mission I'm stuck in,but after getting killed by bad weapon detection and Grenades that hit invisible walls I was,got killed too many times so that was it.One more try,I went in to aggressive and got buried.

Full Auto..Still Rocks..

battling against quest mode. There's no way I can score over 10000 in this. The best I've done is do really well in all but 2 of the challenges, which happened to be 2 of the later ones and both times he took off 70% of my points and called me a failure. The most frustrating game mode

Just had a quick game but decided to try somethng odd. I changed the difficulty to easy and had a game of quest mode. Now, in this game which all the computer does is randomly place blocks, I've always assumed the difficulty did nothing, but not wanting to get through quest mode but wanting super hard difficulty (i heard it gives you more points) i changed the difficulty to easy and well, just made it. It seemed easier. Even the time I royally fucked up and spent ages he didn't dock me 70%, only 50% and other times the levels seemed easier to complete, well, i dont know but its done and super hard was unlocked. So a gave a normal time attack game a go on super hard. I was having a normal game - nothing at all seemed different - except my score. It was over 2 and a half times as high as my previous best. This game seems broken to me. The fundamental idea is good but you can't credit the developers as its a Bejewelled (which i've never played) rip-off but its implementation is crap. Only 4 modes, 1 of which is broken, with minimal options and a shit scoring system that gives you points depending on a difficulty setting which changes nothing. Argh. Frustrating. I'm glad I didn't pay full price, no matter how addicting the game is

Well, I kicked up my N64 today and played some Doom64, not recalling how horribly dark everything is. I know it's not the lack of video power on the N64, rather just the creators not making the interface bright enough. I had to close my door, window blinds, turn off all lights, and push the brightness to the max on both my TV and game options to get even a slight visual on the game. It is really fun and new add-on for the Doom series at the time, plus I love the old style of graphics, just the damn dark tint of the game! But anyways, fooled with it for some time and did pour some time into it.

Another game that ate some time was Mario Tennis. Didn't know what the controls were (ie. power swing) but they have a quick learning curve so I figured it out. It's a spectacular Tennis game, actually one of the best I've played in awhile. I'd rank it among my favorite sports titles now along with Pete Sampres (Genesis), Minnesota Fats (Saturn), and the many racers I enjoy (F-Zero the most for some odd reason). But there's so many character, I was amazed at the selection. It'll be a game with lots of time poured into it in the comming months over summer break.

On another note, I picked up Mega Man Xtreme 2 on the GBC and that's some real fun there. I cought onto the game real fast and enjoy it a lot. The graphics are quite nice and the levels are challenging (As in all Mega Man games) but at the same time a bit easy. I'm not much of a traveling on the go gamer but am impressed enough at this game to sit back and play it infront of my consules. :D

Well, that's about it for the past day or 2, so we'll see what else comes up. Since I rehooked up my N64 earlier this week during cleaning my room I'll begin playing the many of some titles I own on it.

NES - Gauntlet...

I can't believe I'm going to play through this entire game for my RTM article. I'm playing it under emulation on the Dreamcast so I can use savestates and not have to swallow the whole thing in one sitting but it's still quite a workout.

PS2 - Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War

I was actually really anticipating this game but left it on the wayside and figured I'd pick it up "eventually" due to needing to sock away money up until September for some life-changing stuff I need to do. So I didn't think much of it on the release date. Two days later a package arrived from Amazon.com and what does it happen to be - Ace Combat Zero. My girlfriend had it preorded for me. :embarrassed: I haven't had the time to sit down and go through it in one sitting (as I usually do with the AC games, I'll devote an entire day to doing nothing but playing them) but I got through one path in about three.

I was a little dissapointed that there aren't huge overlaps to Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War which I still feel is the greatest flight game to ever be created - but then again Namco never said that was going to be the case. The story isn't as massive as the AC5 plot with a big government conspiracy and a tale of revenge and the comradery of your small squadron, etc. Instead it's about aces and squadrons. So the emphasis is less on a huge twising story and more on encounters with highly advanced squadrons comprised of the best pilots in the world of ACZ / AC5. Depending on how you approach each mission your "Ace Style" shifts between Mercenary (you destroy everything), Knight (only take out critical targets, let disabled planes get away, fly and fight with honor), or Soldier (a balance between the two, having mercy yet carving out destruction). Your Ace Style decides which ace squadrons you will go up against. There are also a few missions that have branching objectives with multiple campaigns so it takes at least a minimum of three play throughs to see all the events - that is if you can keep your Ace Style where you want it to be.

There is a backstory there but it's told through live action interviews with the other aces as it's supposed to be part of a documentary of the Belkan War. I do miss the CG cutscenes from AC5 which beat the pants off any other CG ever, including anything Square ever came up with to date. While the story isn't super engrossing, it does explain how the seeds were sewn for the events that would unfold in Ace Combat 5. However the information logs that have a brief backstory and stats of every major pilot you shoot down in the game is impressive and interesting to read.

It's not a full fledged sequel in terms of being the next Ace Combat game but it has a lot of gameplay, the story is still good, and the AI is vicious. There is no better example of this than how I got through the final battle - damage at 94%, secondary weapons empty, and only four primary missiles remaining. I have a few more things I want to unlock before I sit down and write a full review.

However, I have been reliving some memorys from looong ago. I used to have Snake, Rattle n' Roll and R.C. Pro -Am for the NES. Two games I absolutely loved. Oh, and Pro-Am for the original GB too....

Haven't played this game in quite a while, due to Psyvariar2, Radirgy and Under Defeat if i want a shooter. Went through it on a few credits then did level 4 on practice. Later on in the day i thought i'd see how far i can get on 1 credit. So i practiced a couple of levels so i remembered what was happening and jumped in. One lifed level 1, lost a life somewhere stupid on the level 2 boss but got an extend, start of level 3 i wasn't paying attention so lost a life. Then came level 4. Urgh, need to practice it, lost a few lives but got an extend so was going into the boss with 1 life left. You know how on this game the bosses have a timer, well I got to about 10 seconds left on him and then crashed into him. Yup, would've made it onto stage 5 on 1 credit for the first time to unlock that on practice mode (which i desperately need because the whole level is doable apart from that stupid snake boss, he takes whole credits off me). I might have another run through tomorrow. Once thats done i just need to suss out that snake boss.

I can't believe I'm going to play through this entire game for my RTM article. I'm playing it under emulation on the Dreamcast so I can use savestates and not have to swallow the whole thing in one sitting but it's still quite a workout.

You have more intestinal fortitude than me. I remember what a nightmare that game is. I wonder how many players have even finished it. @_@

I started playing Gradius III & IV for PS2 this morning. Man, it rocks to finally have this game. But man, do I suck!! Without the slowdown that the SNES version had, Gradius III is an even tougher game. I couldn't even get past the second level!! :eek 2:

NES today:
Adventures of Link: Legend of Zelda II (started a new game today)
Ninja Gaiden 2 (I got 1 hit away from beating the last boss, then died)
will probably play Ms. Pac Man (Tengen Cart)

I'm gonna be getting a new MVS board soon, so I will be playing a lot of those games hopefully. The board I own currently has some weird problem where it won't play any of the sound effects. I'm probably going to keep it as a project to see if I can fix it.

Le Mans 24 Hours - Dreamcast

I won my first race since putting this on expert woo! It was the 2nd race in the initial 3 race championship. I followed this up by doing the championship again and in the first race I managed to place pole and the end that race in first :D . How did I follow that up, by spinning twice on the last 2 laps on a race i could have won. I can do this championship, i have proved that now. I'll never be able to win the 3rd race because of one thing - the first corner. I take it completely differently to the computer cars, in fact, its possibly faster than how the AI does it. However, instead of avoiding me because i'm on a completely different line, what do they do - ram me off the road. Each lap there's a car behind me all i do is hope not to be rammed off. Anyway, there's another 2 turns on this race i'm slow at so, well, i'll just need to finish awesomely in the first two - i'll give it a good shot someday soon.

Early in the AM hours and I started Legend of the Mystical Ninja. At first I thought this was just an action game but it has RPG elements, too. I also noticed that Goemon is called Kid Yang in this game. I always thought his name was Goemon. Uh, little help on this?

Famicom - Fantasy Zone II: The Teardrop of Opa Opa

I finally sat down and spent some serious time playing this game. I've given it quick plays in the past and evaluations of basic stuff but never a hard play. It's a lot of fun and plays better than the Famicom or NES version (they were different games) of the original.

PS2 - Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War

Finished my Soldier "Ace Style" runthrough, doing Mercenary tomorrow. Still a ton of stuff to unlock in the assault records.

Well I tried to start Nightmare Creatures 2 on the Dreamcast. But it wouldn't load the disk.I got 5 DC games in a box-lot at an auction and none of them would load.(All scratched to shit) So I had mentioned Quake 3 in another thread and realiased that I had only tried the game to make sure it had worked at the time. So I sat down and started playing.
What an awesomely groovy game! I was up to tier 6 in only a couple hours.I think I'll finish it today. :)

with Final Fantasy 9 done, I'm just kinda unwinding and sampling various other games to see what I'm in the mood for. Right now I'm playing Monster Hunter and it seems pretty nifty (almost like an action-based variant of Everblue 2, which I also want to sink some time into).

Took me forever to find a copy of this game in the wild, too :(

Last night I invited a friend over after hanging out at a shopping center with others and he had some spare time to play some late night games. I fired up the LAN and a computer for him to run and did some Total Annihilation. We gamed til around 1am playing only one long match. It was a ton of fun packed with goodies because I went ahead and downloaded the final patch. The CDs I have are from version 1.x so it had limited max units, didn't have as big a list of units, and contains higher resolution capabilities; so after updating it was really nice. After he left I went ahead and went up against a few computers and slaughtered them with a large group of Big Berthas. This is what they look like:

But anyways, this morning I decided to crack at playing the single missions. I got up to level 6 within 3hrs so it was entertaining to actually play a campaign mode once again in a RTS. Great times :) I'll be playing some more tonight.

Spent a lot of time playing Gradius III & IV. My word, these games are HARD. I can't even get past the Moai Head boss in Gradius III. Barely got past the boss of stage 4 in Gradius IV.

Having a tough time getting past this skull boss in Soul Blazer. Time to resort to a Walkththrough.

Got 233 lines on Tetris DS Sunday night.

Crap, I don't think I've played anything yet today. Guitar Hero or Xenogears will most likely be played tonight, though. Galactic Wrestling: Featuring Ultimate MUSCLE might get some time.

Once school's over, though, I will be playing eight or so hours a day, I believe. Don't worry, I may exercise an hour a day or something, too.
