played a few hours worth of sonic all star racing this week and enjoyed it. Might buy the game when its good and cheap. Its not mario kart but still pretty damn good (put it right behind mario kart on the kart racing list) need to get back to my rock band habit soon but I'm staying so busy with school and work and family/friends (don't know any big rock band players to play with)

I'm just slightly over half way through Donkey Kong 64 on Nintendo 64 now, with over 110 golden bananas. I've beaten both the third and fourth stages. The fourth boss was another pushover, but thankfully the third put up a little bit of a fight. I'm still missing one of Chunky's golden bananas in Frantic Factory, but I scoured the place and came up with nothing. The only thing I can think of is maybe I have to beat all the enemies in a room somewhere to make something appear. I generally don't pay too much attention to the enemies in the game because they rengenerate anyway, plus many can't be defeated with the normal attacks. I'm glad to be completely finished with Gloomy Galleon, though. It wasn't a bad stage, but it was making me feel a little nasty after long sessions of swimming around. I also have this weird fear swimming underwater in 3D games, especially the more primitive ones, but thankfully Donkey Kong 64 has enough detail and a good enough draw distance that it doesn't turn into a big creepy void.

NyxQuest: Kindred Sprits - WiiWare
So after finishing off the 2nd LostWinds game thought I'd go back to this. And to my surprise its actually very different. I found out I was 2 hours into the game and tried to do the next level. But it was really difficult as this game is more about platforming skill whilst multitasking with the Wii remote pointer. After dying many many many times I consulted the internet where it turns out one of the abilities you have with the remote (which I'd completely forgotten due to months of not playing it) is to change the course of those gusts of winds to help guide you through areas. I'd struggled with them, thinking they added to the challenge and wondering why the designers made levels where in order to reach certain places you had to get hurt on spikes (which gives you a little vertical boost). So after I'd read that the level was a lot easier - but still a lot of fun. I did spend about half an hour on that level which is far longer than it should have taken. I'm still not sure about going back to finish off the game.

Heavy Rain Chronicle #1: The Taxidermist - PS3
Thought i'd give this a go. A big 750MB download. And then the game doesn't recognise that I have any bonus content! Turns out I need to download and install the 250MB patch first (which I've been avoiding in the hopes it'll make my game freeze less) so then the DLC appeared. And it presents you a main menu like its a whole new game. Shame its just a fairly short scene - just as long as any in the main game but still - just one little scene, at least I didn't pay extra to download it. The scene is really good though but really detached from the main game and its strange to see Madison investigating the origami killer before the events of the main game. Its a little freaky as well. Anyway, upon completion the game challenges you to get all 5 of the endings. So I did... eventually. I kept getting the same one in about 5 tries (all in different ways though!) before I read that the other 2 entries involving using the phone and then continuing the game. So I did. But upon finishing and heading back to the main menu the game froze on a black screen of death... I was quite wondering if you got an extra bonus for getting all the endings. Seems like i can't find out. Maybe tomorrow if I can be bothered to play through this for about the 10th time.

Got my second highest score ever! At a whopping 352,000 points its just 15,000 shy of my best ever score. And I got another score over 300,000 today. Good stuff.

Doodle Jump - iPhone
So I finally gave it and bought this kindof to stop me playing Bejeweled so much. So far its been pretty fun but I really struggle around 20,000 points, which is just where things get interesting. I love how it posts yours and other people's scores on the side so you get a real sense of progress.

Forza 3 - Xbox 360
Did 3 races in that F class Fiat Abarth essessese or whatever its called because it looked fun, then did my whopping 7 lap of Suzuka career race in my yellow Lamborghini Mucielago LP640. Then on to the best thing so far: Class C Super Lap Series (or something). Basically, one full circuit of each of the long courses: Nurburgring, that Italian one and that Fumio Kande (or something) Japanese one. These are by far my favourite courses and I got to race my favourite Lotus Elise in them. The Nurburgring was excellent as usual, the Italian Amalfi coast one not as good as before, but Fumio Kande was immense, so excellent. You go all over a mountain range. When you go downhill you really pick up speed and the scenery is excellent and then you have all these hairpins. I love it.

Wonder Boy in Monster Land - SMS
I have been enjoying this game lately. I have gotten all the way to the final boss, but I haven't beaten him yet. This is like the transition game of the Wonder Boy/Monster World series. Still arcade like, but it introduces the RPG-like elements of the series.

I beat both Fungi Forest and Crystal Caves in Donkey Kong 64 on Nintendo 64, and I'm at precisely 170 golden bananas. I believe I'm nearing 30 hours on the clock. Boy, I've played RPGs shorter than this! Fungi Forest really stumped me with a couple of its golden bananas for awhile, but I eventually figured them out. I still have no clue where the Battle Arena is, though, and I'm perplexed how I managed to miss it since they're usually pretty obvious. Crystal Caves was frustrating in some spots too, especially with that irritating cave-in every minute, but I've wrapped up everything in there except one last golden banana for Diddy. That area was the first to give me some real grief with normal bananas too, as I spent a long time hunting down two balloons I missed.

This must be good because 1) I didn't play any Bejeweled today, and 2) according to the in-game stats I played for 1 hour yesterday and 1 hour today. I still suck though.

Forza 3 - Xbox 360
Since Espgaluda II still hasn't arrived I played this again. Did the career race in New York which was really really hard, although excellent as I was listening to Jay-Z and Alicia Keys "Empire State Of Mind" at the time. I got that album the same time I got Forza 3 and I pretty much only listen to that whilst playing (though the new Four Tet works well too). Then I did the North America tour in a Ford GT which was ace (debating whether to get a Dodge Viper or not but the red and white stripes of the Ford GT looked far too good and you get just a tiny amount of drift which I like). Then the final Class A career race was Le Mans! Yay! I recognise the track from other games (most notable Le Mans 24hours on the Dreamcast) and it was fun. It made me realise its such a shame this game doesn't do weather or clock effects. Anyway now I'm annoyed that the next career season is set for R3 cars, as I have little to no interest in the R series cars and wanted to try out some S series ones in career, whilst working through the A series cars in the events in between. Shame.

Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing With Banjo-Kazooie - Xbox 360
A bit weird coming to this straight after Forza but I needed something simple to unwind with. Did a couple of missions and then did the first cup on medium with Forklift Ryo. Who is ace. Strangely won the cup even though I only placed first on the last race. Seems a lot harder than the beginner cups and maybe even faster?

I'm in the home stretch with Donkey Kong 64 on Nintendo 64 now, with exactly 196 golden bananas. I've cleared out most of Creepy Castle, understanding why people complain about the Beaver Bother mini-game, argh. Those aren't the two golden bananas I have left in Creepy Castle, though, so at least I'm done with that mini-game. I also still have to locate 20 more normal bananas, probably two balloons I'm guessing. I've finished most everything left in the previous stages too. I think that missing Battle Arena is all I have left. I found some more stuff in the DK Isles hub area too, so I just need two golden bananas there. The final fifth banana I know I get for finding all of the banana fairies, but I guess the last of them are ahead of me since I've found all of them in all of the areas I've visited thus far.

The weekend train journeys consisted of:

Doodle Jump - iPhone

Valet Hustle - iPhone
Read about this on Kotaku - gave it a go. Its not great. In fact its pretty poor - didn't stop me playing it for about an hour till I decided to quit though. Its basically a poor version of Flight Control where you don't even need to draw the paths.

Soosiz - iPhone
Can't believe I forgot about this. Its still incredible - its basically a Mario Galaxy inspired 2D platformer. I'm about halfway through now, with almost 3 hours played. The levels are still inventive and I'm not even touching the bonus blue coin levels for now. If this was on a console I'm sure I wouldn't forgot about it - and its good enough and full enough to be a console game.

GTA: Chinatown Wars - DS
Almost thought it'd be another journey where I bring the DS and a stack of games for no reason. But I went back to this. And did a couple of missions. And got frustrated lots for having to repeat failed missions but losing my weapons etc because I didn't realise there was some link I needed to click on in one of the first emails which lets you order weapons/armour to your safehouse.

Arkanoid (NES) - an excellent game once you have the f'n Vaus controller in your hand!

Dune (Genesis) - never got to play the 'granddaddy' (but not really) of RTS' before, but I ended up getting hooked and spent longer on it than I expected to!

Mega Man Wily Wars (Genesis, repro) - what more can you say? It's Mega Man! I played the first game just to check out the differences between this and the NES one. The graphics and music received a nice bump, with some decent parallax scrolling going on in the background. Actually, I think that this version is slightly easier, due to the fact that there's some slowdown when fighting the bosses.

Soul Star (SCD) - a fun 'Mode-7' style shooter, but it's also pretty damn tough!

The Krion Conquest (NES) - a decent Mega Man knockoff, but without any sort of balancing whatsoever. I couldn't even pass the first level.

At just barely under 40 hours, I'm finally completely done with Donkey Kong 64. :) I got the last few things needed to get 101%, and I even collected everything that didn't count towards that too, like all normal bananas and banana coins. Beating King K. Rool was a pain in the ass, though. In fact, scratch that, the final boss isn't K. Rool, it's bad camera angles and controls. :P In a general sense, those were very good throughout the game, but for whatever reason the final battle has so many problems with not being able to see what you want to see, not being able to tell where you are in relation to other stuff, not getting the Kongs to perform the right action because they're not perfectly lined up, and so on. It doesn't help that it's so freakin' slow-paced and time-consuming, especially because you're doomed to lose each time you get to the next Kong because it's not easy to figure out the "puzzle" of what to do right away. So even if you only lose once per character, which I definitely wasn't fortunate enough to experience, that's five attempts, each progressively longer than the last. It's kind of hard to express because I'm not opposed to losing on bosses, but it's just frustrating when you've mastered several lengthy parts yet you're stuck doing them over and over because you're still trying to figure out the later parts. I guess I just would've preferred more reflex-based action to the battle, but the puzzle nature of it fits with the rest of the game. At the very least, I can appreciate some of the creativity behind the battle (like climbing into K. Rool's shoe as Tiny and battling his toes, haha).

*edit*

Finally opened and started up Final Fantasy on the PSP.

Thought it was difficult at first because when I made my way up to Garland and finished him off on level 1 like I normally do, then made my way to Provoka and was like. Damn, these enemies are taking off a ton. Then afterwards the Pirates took off quite a bit. I bought some equipment at Provoka and went to equip it and realized why.

I never equipped any of the items I bought at Coneria. I thought the items that I was attacking with were Rapiers and Nunchukas but come to find out they were Rods and Daggers. The character graphics aren't too great so I didn't think the weapons would be either since on all the other FF games you don't have any equipment at the start. So I posted this saying that I liked the game a lot more than the original because it was actually a lot more difficult etc.

Anyways. I'm going to restart my character since I'm not far into the game. That way I get a real interpretation of the game without limiting myself. Atleast I can say I got to Provoka without getting any new equipment or grinding.

I've been on cloud nine since last night because I finally accomplished something had been over 20 years in the making - I beat the first Castlevania on NES. This game has had a considerable impact on my life. My fascination with it played a huge role in turning me into a gamer, it was the starting point for my love for the series, and I met my fiance thanks to our mutual interest in the series. But the deal is that despite that I was mesmerized with the game as a kid, completely enchanted by its graphics, music, atmosphere, etc., I never really played it back then. My love came purely from watching my brother play all three NES games, which he played frequently because they were his favorite. Back then I couldn't handle much more than Super Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt, so Castlevania was too hard for me. But I distinctly remember how my brother never even got to the final stage, I believe, and it amazed his crowd of friends when one of them actual got to Dracula. The kid never beat him, mind you; just getting up to him was a huge accomplishment among them. So over all these years, no matter how experienced a gamer I've become and no matter the fact that I've beaten most of the classic-style Castlevania games, I've always held on to that feeling from my childhood that Castlevania was this massively daunting, insurmountable game that I'd never be able to beat. And as a result of that, I never gave the game a genuine attempt. But last night I decided to give it a serious try, and even though some parts were definitely frustrating and took some practicing, I beat it without too much trouble. I know in reality the game isn't THAT hard, but I finally proved that to myself. And boy does it feel good. :)

And I actually beat it a second time today. With the fear and intimidation gone, I'm seeing the game in a new light. I've always enjoyed the game even before, but now it's actually relaxing, even up to the fight with Dracula. I love many other Castlevania games, but I really appreciate the simplicity of this one. I could easily imagine myself playing it over and over in the future just for the pure fun of it. I like the normal mode best, though. I played till near the end of stage 3 in hard mode, and while I think I could beat that too with some additional practice, it wasn't nearly as fun since mostly it's just added bats and medusa heads everywhere.

I played a little more Castlevania on NES since my last post, but now I've moved on to my next game. Keeping with this little unintentional pattern of beating (for the first time) games in series I have extensive experience with already, I decided to go with Monster World IV, which I'm playing via the Monster World Complete Collection on PlayStation 2. It's too bad I have to play the game in Japanese when all the other games have English options, but that's only because those games got localizations while Monster World IV didn't. It's a real shame too because it's quite the technical marvel for the Genesis. It proves the Genesis is every bit as capable of a colorful pastel game as the SNES, plus it's highly animated and has a really pleasant soundtrack (I love how the main theme pops up throughout the game in various arrangements). Combined with the charming characters and great gameplay, it would definitely be listed as among the best of the best of the Genesis library if it got a US release. In some way I prefer the previous game, though. This one is much more straightforward than the previous games, so it's leans a little more towards straight action than true adventuring. But regardless, it's quality stuff. So far I've completed the second dungeon, the volcano.

Dune (Genesis) - I'm really beginning to love this game. It's like Command & Conquer 'lite'...but with worse A.I.; still, great fun nonetheless :)

Mega Man Wily Wars (Genesis) - For the first time ever, I beat the first Mega Man!! It was damn hard, but not legendary hard as people make it out to be. Now, I'm playing the second MM and pretty much flying through without any problems; it's basically a cakewalk compared to the 1st one!

Still Final Fantasy 20th Anniversary. Just saved right before entering the Temple of Fiends for the second(or third if you count me going there for the Mystic Key equipment.)

Either going to go through the Temple of Fiends 2000 years ago, pick up the Masamune, then Teleport back out and finish the five extra areas, or finish the five areas then the Temple of Fiends last.

I'm about half way through the stream sanctuary in Monster World IV via the Monster World Complete Collection on PlayStation 2. This game is doing a great job at addressing all the flaws I perceived in my first impressions. When the game started, it seemed like child's play, but the difficulty has kicked up nicely. In fact, I've actually been noticing that hearts seem to drop less frequently in this game than in previous Monster World games. Also, it seemed too straightforward in the last couple dungeons, but now it's getting a bit more maze-like. That's only within the individual dungeons, though. It looks like I can never return to dungeons after beating them, so there's never an issue of going back with new abilities to find new stuff. I'm going to have to try hard to get all the life drops since I know I need to find all of them in the game for the opportunity to get the legendary armor at the end.

I remember Dune 2000 for PC as being one of my favorite RTS games from back in the day. It was just very slow, but might have been the PC

Currently I'm trying to beat Contra Hard Corps which seems a lot easier than I expected after hearing a lot of stories about it.

Other than that I'm still trying to complete Mario 64 (never had an N64, but a playstation, without regret)

I was playing Gurumin. Amazing game. But, I just got my new tv last night and was playing Yakuza 3 to chapter 2 until going to bed. In that short amount of time playing it, it's easily one of my favorite next gen titles.

Yakuza 3 is the best exclusive on the system and is one game I would have picked up the PS3 for if I didn't own one.

Yesterday I was playing:

Legendary Wings (NES) - God, I forgot how freakin' hard this game is! I actually made it to the second-to-the-last stage before the game's programming decided that I had made it too far.

Adventures of Batman & Robin (Genesis) - Hard, but still, an amazing game to this day and easily the best Batman game that I've ever played.

Double Dragon III (NES) - Always a classic, with probably the toughest AI of the whole series. The hit detection is a little more sloppy then I remember, though.

I believe I'm getting fairly close to finishing Monster World IV via the Monster World Complete Collection on PlayStation 2, which would be no surprise since none of the Monster World games are all that long. I finished off the Stream Sanctuary, completed all three portions of the Ice Pyramid, took care of some business in Rapadagna, and now I'm working on the fourth and final of the main dungeons, Aegis Island. I just beat the Red Jelly mid-boss in it, so I shouldn't have much left. I'll probably head back to town to cash in my gold bars and buy the Legendary Armor, though, since I've read that the gold bars are actually worth less after completing Aegis Island. Turns out the Legendary Armor is already available; it's the sword and shield of the set that I need all the life drops for. I hope I get my little friend Pepe back soon since it kinda stinks to be without him.
