finally got around to buying bioshock, so i'm playing through it now. not too many people have mentioned the horror aspect of it. either its something you're just supposed to know, or maybe i'm just a gigantic pansy, but playing it in 5.1 in the dark with whispers and footsteps coming from the corners scares the piss out of me.

of course, rockband's on the playlist for the weekend.

After nearly two months, I finally got back into Star Ocean 1: First Departure on PSP. I didn't accomplish too much; I just went to a couple more towns, advanced the plot a little, did a whole bunch of Private Actions, and wandered the world map. It served well for getting me back in the flow of it, though.

I also played some more Centipede and the trivia game in Atari Anniversary Advance on my Game Boy Advance SP. No record breaking scores, but I think my average score is higher than it used to be. It doesn't seem too daunting to beat my previous. On one good run, I got around 25,000 points before losing my first life. If I didn't choke and start losing lives left and right after that, I'm sure I could've pulled off a great score. Oh, and I also briefly played some Tales of Phantasia, which I picked up here in the Marketplace. It's great to finally have the first entry in the series. I've been meaning to get it for SO long; in fact, I was looking into buying the Super Famicom version years ago before the GBA version (maybe even the GBA itself) existed.

I think I'm addicted to Star Ocean 1: First Departure on PSP again, hehe. I finally got Welch, and I've been going around doing loads of Private Actions with her. She's a lot more annoying in this game, since they made her more like a crazy little kid, like Roger in Star Ocean 3 or Precis in Star Ocean 2. She's still pretty funny at times, though, like her scenes in Star Ocean 3, and they even reference those scenes. The fan favorite was the scene in which she was asleep and all the innuendos make it seem like she was having a naughty dream, so now her default position for Private Actions in many towns is to be asleep somewhere and mumbling goofy stuff. The best thing is getting to use her in battle, though, and finally getting to use that hand stick as a weapon. I remember theorizing that she'd be a playable character in the Director's Cut in Star Ocean 3, but that didn't pan out. I guess I still had a nose for what was to come, though. Anyway, I also got the Moore Emblem, which required me to clear the simple, straightforward basement dungeon.

Other than that, more Centipede and the trivia game on Atari Anniversary Advance via my Game Boy Advance SP. I played a tiny bit of The Fantastic Adventures of Dizzy on NES because everybody in my house has gone crazy and they want to beat the game. Of course, 15 minutes later they don't even want to look at the game. :P Finally, I started a file and wandered a little in Lagoon on SNES just to see if it's holding saves now that I replaced the battery, and after letting the night pass, the save was still there. :)

I haven't had time to post lately, so this is about a week's worth.

Enchanted Arms (360) - I'd been so excited about getting this game, but the tutorial took so long that I fell asleep. When I woke up, the tutorial was still waiting for me to continue.

F.E.A.R. (360) - I beat the first stage and had to save and stop.

John Woo's Strangehold (360) - I found this game to be a gussied-up version of Max Payne, but it was satisfying until I got to the first boss with the rocket launcher.

TMNT (360) - Not bad for a kids' game, but it became rather basic after a while and made me long for the old-school Turtles Konami arcade games. The achievements are really easy to get.

In Star Ocean 1: First Departure on PSP I got the last of the four emblems I needed from Astral, and I also took some time out to clear Sylvalant Cave. It's nice that in the remake they don't instantly make Marvel disappear when you enter the room with Eris. Instead they give you an option now. I chose to keep her since I can't get Eris without Ashlay in this file. I also did a whole bunch more Private Actions, finally completed Puffy's virtual RPG (I'm still mad that she didn't become a playable character now that Welch has basically stolen her role in the series), and I did a lot of fighting in the arena. I finally beat rank A with Ratix and Cius, but I can't do it with anyone else just yet. I also met Tinek, but I obviously can't recruit him now that I have a full party.

I also played the usual stuff. A little more Centipede via Atari Anniversary Advance on my Game Boy Advance SP and some Super Smash Bros. Brawl on Wii with friends.

Today I gave the 360 more love...

John Woo's Strangehold (360) - I got very far in the second stage and I'm still not done with it. I'm stuck at the part where you have to set bombs on four different boats.

Ridge Racer 6 (360) - I hadn't touched this game since 11/06, but it's pretty fun once you use nitrous in the stages. Before that, it was pretty lifeless.

Sega Superstars Tennis (360) - I spent most of the day unlocking new characters and stages. I just got the NiGHTS stage for multiplayer.

I'm hoping I can get to The Simpsons Game (360) tonight, but there's a new episode of Family Guy on tonight...

I'm getting close to the end of Star Ocean 1: First Departure for PSP. After getting the four emblems, I headed back to Van to get permission to enter the inner sanctum of Parj Temple, and I completed that dungeon. That big story sequence apparently triggered a new set of Private Actions available in most towns, so now I'm checking out all of those. I really like how this version of the game pushes Ronixis's and Iria's developing relationship even harder. Lots of cute, awkward scenes with them, and Welch's love potion makes everything that much crazier. :) I also completed some more ranks in the arena with Welch. I should tie up all the loose ends now because, if memory serves, I can't get back to the main world once I enter the demon world.

I also played more Centipede via Atari Anniversary Advance and Boxxle on my Game Boy Advance SP, but I didn't really get anywhere in either.

I just started playing 'TMNT' (based off of last year's movie) for the Game Boy Advance. I bought it on a lark after coming across a few surprisingly good reviews about it, saying how it brings back memories of River City Ransom and the old TMNT arcade games.

Well, after spending an hour or so playing, I can definitely see it's inspiration. The gameplay is strictly a 2-D, combo-intensive beat-em-up, with the difficulty to match. You get to level up. Background objects that are destroyed can be used as weapons. Tires and boxes that are tossed bounce off of multiple enemies. You can even juggle some fool and then hit him with such force that he plows through other enemies. You also get to explore a small overworld, much like River City Ransom, and purchase new moves, status upgrades and much more (with coins that pop out of defeated enemies, like RCR). There are a few issues that I have with this game at the moment; controls that are randomly sticky, no 'status' screen (you really can't tell what is upgraded unless you go back to a shop) and no multiplayer options whatsoever.

I must say that this game was a complete surprise, seeing how I never even knew that a GBA version was released. Who would've even thought that it would be this awesome?

I'm very close to beating Star Ocean 1: First Departure on PSP now. I entered the demon world, defeated the Crimson Shield, saved Astral from attack, headed back to the demon world to complete that section, and got through what I would imagine was most of the laboratory within the demon world. As straightforward as this game has been, I actually got lost in there. It's pretty darn confusing with different paths going everywhere and overlapping each other, but my biggest problem was probably that I had a lot of distractions at the time. Once I got completely lost, I just worked my way out to the entrance and saved. I'll figure it out later.

You know how awhile back I talked about demolishing my old Centipede high score in Atari Anniversary Advance by around 8,000 points? Well, I had an absolutely amazing run last night that makes that jump look like nothing. My old high was about 58,000, but last night I got a whopping 82,624. :) Hitting that 100,000 mark actually seems like a possibility now.

Team Fortress 2: Man this can be fun. I prefer the soldier, but the sniper is quite good as well. I've tried the spy a bit and decided it's just not my style. I'm well on my way to the 1000 kills achievement (need about 120 more).

Rock Band: Hadn't played this since February, but I've gotten back into it thanks to multiplayer. I'm all drums, the guitar and mic are reserved for friends. I thought I would be rusty but I'm actually beating my old scores. I still get owned on expert score duels a lot of the time, but I've won my fair share as well. And my new biggest pet peeve is kids who quit half-way through a song because they are losing. It took me 10 songs to get the "five wins in a row" achievement because people kept quitting on me. One kid quit after the song was over, and it didn't count as a win!

Dead Rising demo: Yeah, I'm slow to the show with this one, but man is it fun. I read the entire DR thread here at DP last night and I"m not sure what to think of the save system. I plan to get this game soon, so I guess I'll find out soon enough.

I was expecting to beat Star Ocean 1: First Departure on PSP right away this weekend, but the end sequence was surprisingly fleshed out a fair bit so I only beat it just last night. When I completed everything in the demon world, the end sequence still pops completely out of nowhere, but now it's not nearly as rushed and tacked on feeling. Instead of being whisked off to the final dungeon as soon as you land on the planet, there's actually a small resistance town, a little world map, an extra story sequence in which a few party members get kidnapped and they have to be rescued from a new prison dungeon, and a bit more stuff added on to the final dungeon. Pretty neat. The final dungeon itself seemed a lot more straightforward that I remember it being on Super Famicom. There was basically just one path to follow through the whole thing with lots of tiny rooms sticking off the main path that had treasure chests. Very uninspired. I found the last battle a bit anti-climatic compared to the original as well, even if the boss isn't a complete pushover anymore (I did beat both forms on my first try rather easily, though). Since I skipped the bonus dungeons in the last few tri-Ace games I've played, telling myself I'd do them later on (and I still haven't), I'm making it a point to do this one right away. So far, though, I HATE how TOSE (the company that made this remake) handled the post-game stuff. There are little changes to just about every detail of how you get to the bonus dungeon, but the worst thing is that there is no way at all to get back to the main world of the game. What the hell? Why would they do that when the original allowed you to go everywhere after beating the game? They even add insult to injury by having a staircase down to the Trial Cave under Van castle just to do a stupid secret that allows you to buy a useless comic book item, but there's no way to get out to the rest of the main world. When you go up the steps which would normally lead to Van castle, you're just taken back to the area in which you can get to the bonus dungeon. It's all very frustrating.

Anyway, I also played several of the games on Atari Anniversary Advance on my Game Boy Advance SP (big whoop).
