Shadowgate Classic (GBC - being played on my GBA)
Played through the NES version several times, but not in a number of years, and just got the portable version. Still remember the solutions to all the puzzles (so far anyway), but it's still fun to pop in for a few minutes at a time. Also gotta love those death scenes; I've died intentionally a few times already just to read the descriptions.
I admit I did kind of forget that using the flute plays the first few bars of the music from Deja Vu, though. I always dig subtle references like that.

Tobal 2 - import PSX -- I've only wanted this FOREVER, but my anti-ebay policy has prevented obtaining it. Found it in the wild today in respectable condition.
Oh my gosh is this game ever fun!! It's got the grappling of DOA, the air juggles of Soul Calibur and projectiles of Toshinden. Add to that the incredible adventure mode and it's 100% win. The graphics are fantastic in motion, almost early PS2 quality. Music is amazing; quite varied and very well composed.
I was having trouble with the adventure mode at first, given that I can't read or understand much Japanese. But there is an included tutorial video that actually got me on my way! (yes, I'm sure there are FAQs out there, but I'm stubborn!)
-- Everything a successful MODERN DAY fighting game needs to succeed (except maybe online matches) was included in this brawler --way back in '97.

Haven't checked in for a while, but I recently went on an NES rampage and tore through:
Castlevania I, II & III
Battletoads
Clash at Demonhead
Goonies II
Dragon Warrior I
Rambo
Zelda I & II
Mike Tyson's Punch-Out
And probably a few others I forgot about
Not all in one sitting, of course ;)
Right now I'm trying to wade through Zelda Outlands...
Well, that nearly brand new Xbox that I bought two weeks ago started acting up with "your disc may be scratched or dirty" or " This is not an Xbox disc-please insert an appropriate disc" (when the tray is empty), and freezing (stop and start)....so I've exchanged that unit for another one this morning and will be starting my awesome Fable character yet again....and my level 25 Forza save file. You gotta love it when people sell stuff only because it starts to crap out. Sign of the times I guess....

FINALLY got my NES properly reassembled after refurbishing the 72-pin connector... I had forgotten that the cart housing had a tab that had to be placed UNDERNEATH the circuit board. I was so perplexed and frustrated with it I just ended up leaving it half re-assembled for a good few weeks! Ah well...all is good now... After fiddling around and blowing in the cartridges and stuff (I swear this works) I played...
NES - Jackal
I had tons of childhood memories playing this game at my best friend's house. He loved this game, so in turn, I grew to love this game. Made a pretty good run getting to the level before the last, then ran out of continues. I recommend this game to anyone who likes Contra-y overhead run and gun games. I sure miss that two-player action... A truly great game by Konami.
NES - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Yeah everyone remembers this one. I STILL hate that underwater level after all these years. I hate playing it. When I got to it, I died abunch of times due to those snarky little electric seaweed things, and then turned off the game--I was done with it. Ah, just like back in the day :)

Wait, you just refurbished your pins but then blew in the carts anyway? Sheesh. :/
Yeah, for some reason it's still finicky after the refurb. Sure, it's got a vice-grip on the games now--but doesn't mean it won't grey screen on me sometimes :(

09-12-2008, 11:51 PM
I just mean blowing on the carts is one of the main ways they get dirty and nasty in the first place, and if you just cleaned and bent your pins (or even bought a new connector) you're just putting all that grime back on there slowly.

09-12-2008, 11:58 PM
I've heard that as well. But I'm going to be honest with you--I tried all the tricks getting the games to work, and they didn't work, then I blew on them (which I know is a HUGE HUGE taboo in the collecting world) and they worked. I can't explain it. I think it was magic. Fyi I wasn't spitting into my cartridges--I did my best to be careful as an older, and more educated gamer than I was those many years ago, haha.

This has nothing to do with game-playing but I was watching a game show on TV a day or so ago and a woman contestant on it was named...Atara. I wonder if her dad was a gamer? :D For me, I continue to play MLB Power Pros 2008. I have two seasons going on at the same time. In one, I'm playing as the Pirates...in the other, I'm playing as the Titans and populating it with as many players as I can that I have in my main keeper baseball fantasy team. I haven't got everyone yet I want...some teams don't seem to want to trade with me ;)
Started up my Fable character again. Going out in a few minutes to grab up a copy of MLB 2K5 World Series Edition (Xbox) that I noticed at lunchtime. (Gotta love working on the same plaza as a vintage game shop) I HOPE that it's complete with the pack-in disc of extras.

I thought I had just bought into the hype by buying it, but I started playing and it is totally worth it.
People say the game is easy, but I like that the game plays based around you. For the first 3 stages, I got through it by killing everything, and when I hit the 4th stage (civilization), I had been known a a violent group of dudes, so everybody was attacking me (well they did this in the 3rd stage as well) and they refused absolutely everything I could offer them for peace, that is really cool.
I am only on the space part right now (just got to it and have not played it yet). I am have done nothing but play that game since Friday. I skipped almost the entire weekend for Spore, and it has been an extremely long time since I have played a game that has pulled me away from life for so long.

Even with as much crap as this game has been getting, I absolutely knew this game would be one that would consume my life for at least a solid week. (If only I had a Mac compatible with the game...Intel only? Gah!) Glad to hear someone just sitting back and enjoying it for a change--even if the DRM is evil, its an innovative game. At least give it that.
On the home-front...Gamecube makes a comeback the past few days...
GC - Mega Man Network Transmission
Still loving this game. Really great translation of the Battle Network series to platformer genre. I know it's gotten some criticism--but I'm enjoying it thoroughly :) I think the difficulty level is spot on and the controls are fine once you get used to them.
GC - Odama
This just came in the mail today--and I really like it, haha. Another unique game that has gotten criticism due to controls/difficulty level. Sure, I'm only on the 3rd stage--but pinball + military strat. + me randomly shouting commands into a mic = good times. Yeah it's hard, yeah the controls can be cumbersome...but it's not like, survival horror game cumbersome. And who doesn't enjoy a good challenge once and awhile? I think it's one of the best bargain/unique titles you can get for the cube right now...or dare I say...any system right now?
These two games actually have alot in common. Really underrated GC titles (I'm beginning to think people just hate the cube?). Both criticized on their controls and difficulty level. Both met with high expectations when they were being developed but were met with lukewarm response when released. Maybe I'm just happy with them because I'm playing them now instead of when they came out? My hopes were probably alot lower ^^;
Of course...what kind of fpbrush what are you playing post would this be without???
DC - Red Dog
Ah the Dreamcast, yes. Got this game in a lot awhile ago, just now getting to devote some time to it. Pretty fun, as I haven't played a good vehicle shooter in some time. Recommended if you like the genre.
It's funny because with all these games, I actually had to look up in the manual (yes, you saw right) how to perform some of the moves/controls. I honestly haven't done this in FOREVER. It seems like games I've played recently are so straightforward you don't need a manual, or are complex enough were the developer feels the need to make you go through really long tutorials before you play the game. Am I the only one that misses reading manuals in order to know how to play (or play parts of the game)?
Ok, this post is long enough, until next time!

I keep playing MLB Power Pros 2008 on the PS2. I'm playing two seasons...one as the Pittsburgh Pirates. I did make one trade, sending away Jose Bautista (who I never cared for and who the Pirates have traded now in real-life) and got Andy LaRoche who the Pirates got in one of their big trades. I still have Jason Bay and Xavier Nady on my roster, though. My other season I'm using as close a roster as I've been able to manage to the roster I have in a keeper fantasy baseball league. One of the teams refuses to trade me Jack Wilson, though. :(

I'm still not doing much gaming lately, even abandoning Metal Walker for a short while, but I've had some time for my Game Boy Advance SP these last couple days and continued to plug away at it. You know, I often argue against the idea that the longer an RPG (or game in general) is the better, and Metal Walker is the perfect case in point for my idea that an RPG should only last as long as its gameplay warrants. I'm at about 15 hours now, but I'm getting pretty tired of it. I think it would've been perfect ending at about 10. With its near nonexistent story, extremely repetitive landscapes, and battle system that may have an interesting concept but doesn't have enough depth or variety to keep it fun with the insanely frequent random battles, it just becomes dull after awhile. I'm sure the game could be beaten much faster since just about all my time has been battling, but there's no decent way to avoid battles. There's an item that supposedly reduces their frequency, which I always use, but any difference is negligible. And since running away involves physically moving your character to a spot on the battlefield that isn't always easy to get to, most of the time it's faster to just kill all the enemies. Most of all, though, the problem is the world map, which isn't straightforward whatsoever. With everything looking the same, it's impossible to tell one location from the next, which results in a lot of wandering and unnecessary battles to find the right place to go to reach the next place. Plus, it's extra confusing because the game is loaded with places that you have to come back to, but half of the roadblocks are unnecessary because they'll give you three different ways to enter a single area. If the map in the game was actually useful, like the grid-based map in Link's Awakening that only shows areas you've been to, and if treasure chests didn't close after opening them, I might have some idea of where I've already been and where I haven't. It's a real shame that GameFAQs doesn't have a map available. Well, anyway, I only have one more upgrade left I think, so I imagine I'm nearly done. It's lost most of its fun factor, but I won't give up on it just yet.
Other than that, I finally charged up my PSP and tried out my summer acquisitions. I played some Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins and got my ass handed to me, of course (but at least I rocked out to the main theme), attempted to play Every Extend Extra but had no clue what was going on, tried the Lumines II demo on said game, and played a couple battles in Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions. It makes me really want to start a game in the PlayStation version. I did put around 20 hours into the game years ago, but with my boyfriend and I both playing at the same time and constantly switching files, I accidentally overwrote my file with his. :/ I kinda have a curse with Quest's games since I also lost a file with 100 hours in Tactics Ogre. I really adore Final Fantasy Tactics, though, so I should give it a second try. The PSP port is pretty neat with its FMV that really captures the look of the original art, but the graphics are fuzzy like every PS1 to PSP port I've played and the gameplay seems to chug a little.

I'm just barely shy of beating Metal Walker on my Game Boy Advance SP now. The game even tells the player that he/she is about to enter the final dungeon. :P I also found a few secrets in the game once I had all the upgrades. I found special Core Units for both Land and Sky, and I assume there is a Water one out there somewhere (probably wherever my missing recipes are too). I'll use a guide to find the last few missing pieces since I'm an obsessive collector like that, but I'm looking forward to moving on to something with greater lasting appeal.
I also finally tried out Chaos Wars for PlayStation 2, and everything I heard about the localization is true. The dubbing done by family members of the staff rather than real actors is just atrocious. Thank heavens they included the Japanese voice acting. I promptly restarted and switched to Japanese, but even then the text is near incoherent. I haven't seen a localization this poor since the SNES days. Where the heck were the editors? Oh well, I buy strategy RPGs for the gameplay anyway, and while this doesn't seem like a shining example of the genre, it was still worth getting.
