Forza 3 Demo - Xbox 360
I had no intention of playing this game but due to the new DLC appearing on news-sites and me playing some racing games on the iPhone I thought it was time to play a real console racer. And this demo is fantastic. Full game ordered. The first race I wasn't used to the controls, then I was - so then turned off the remaining assists (traction control and ABS) and that took a little while but then I could beat normal. So I put the enemy AI onto hard. And that took a couple of attempts. So did it on B class. But on A class. Wow. That took me an hour or two of constant attempts to reach 1st place on A class. Anyway, now that I know I can do that - I think when the real game arrives I am going to turn off all assists and put the enemy AI on hard and start the career mode. It could be a game of many many attempts.

Trudging through all the chapters in Final Fantasy 4: The After Years. Not just grinding, but 12 different situation in which grinding is required. Takes so much time, I contemplated quitting altogether a few times.

Speaking of grinding, mass farming isn't much better, as .hack//Quarantine Part 4 can attest to. I'm guessing the programmers knew about the easy leveling in this game and basically did the only other thing they could do to create challenge: Require multiple numbers of rare items to progress.

Ridge Racer Accelerated - iPhone
Beat the two reverse tracks. You can definitely tell these tracks were designed one way around. Which makes them more challenging the other way. Then did the track from Ridge Racer Revolution with a Class B car. That took quite a few goes. I should also add that the track from RRR is much better than the other one. You can have real fun sliding around those corners and there is great thrill to be had from drifting around the final bend, then slamming on the nitro (which the drift just earnt you) to speed past the race leader just before the finish line. Excellent stuff

Was travelling to visit family for Chinese New Year this weekend, so had some time for some portable gaming:

Ridge Racer Accelerated - iPhone
And this is what took up most of my time. I did the 3 remaining tracks on the class 2 cars on the way down, finishing off the in-game content. And so on the way home I downloaded the 6-track pack, which is really just 3 tracks, and their reverses. Two from R4 and the original one from Ridge Racer. One of the R4 tracks is so dull, you can beat it without releasing the accelerator or drifting or anything, and the other one is more fun. I beat both of those with both classes of car and tried and failed at the track from the original Ridge Racer.

Bejeweled Blitz - iPhone
Completely smashed my previous high score of 295,000 with a score of 365,000! I've never played a game like that before.

Never played it before but whilst waiting for a train got this out and went through a whopping 69 levels in a row! There is a lot of content here for a free game, and I'm still on the beginner levels!

After finishing up in Fayel in Infinite Undiscovery on 360, I had to spend some time in Sapran since that town updated too. I finished all of the Item Creation upgrade quests except for the writing one since I need ingredients for that still, so I finally headed to the Underwater Palace. I beat Iskan du Bal, but I didn't save. It looks like I'll be stuck in the dungeon after I finish that battle, but I wanted to see each characters comments after the battle so I redid the battle a couple times real quick. Plus Iskan talks like a total mush mouth, so it took a couple listenings to make out everything said in the cutscenes.

Forza 3 - Xbox 360
Well, so far, hmm, I'm not sure. I'm not loving it. Its merely passable. I've done te end of the first season and some more races but its not gripped me yet. Maybe because each event is the same, and even though everyone says "the car is the star" of this game, I feel each car is more irrelevant since you can upgrade whatever you want until you are more powerful than your opponents. I typically can beat all the medium opponents first go (with all assists off). I'm thinking of going for hard opponents but judging by the demo that means really learning each track and that doesn't mix well with the huge long-term single-player mode here. All the events feel kind of the same as well. PGR4 mixed things up a lot more and picking different cars seemed to make much more of a difference. Well, we'll see how it goes, but I've a feeling it'll be just more of the same, well, I'm about to buy my first Lambo so that'll be good - though I'll keep having to come back to the lower class championship events anyway.

Working my way through all of the floors of the Underwater Palace in Infinite Undiscovery on Xbox 360 went quicker and easier than I was expecting, so now I'm sitting at the final save point in the game. I was smart and saved at the previous save point a second time after defeating the Kraken and filling in the map since the Talk menu dialogue updates after beating the Dreadknight. Since I get the option to change my party right before that fight, I can quickly finish him off with the other members to see what everyone has to say. I suppose it's kind of a shame that the battle isn't challenging at all, but maybe they're saving that for the final battle.

Last few days:

Forza 3 - Xbox 360
I'm now halfway through season 3. Got a Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 which got a lot of play, especially considering I've now unlocked the point-to-point races which are fantastic. Did the Nurburgring which is as fantastic as ever, and then some Amalfi tracks, which are by far the best things I've done in this game - utterly amazing blue skies arcade racing - and I did in in a souped up bright yellow Seat Leon which the game decided to give me just before I was about to buy it anyway. That track is fantastic - its a shame in the career mode it split it up into sections. I can't wait to just go through the whole course - its amazing.

MVP Baseball 2004
MVP Baseball 2005

I'd been playing 2004 for a few weeks but decided to stick in 2005 for comparisons. While 2005 seems to have left out a few animations (mostly excited fans in the stands after a home run who remain shock still in the 2005 edition), the 2005 does seem to include a few other extras...possibly more close-ups of real players and some extra comments including mentioning what some players did the previous season. Of course, both versions have many players no longer in the game...

I'm still sitting at the final save point in Infinite Undiscovery on Xbox 360, but I noticed that after saving there, the door at the beginning of the dungeon opens now. I decided to farm for some Placidus Wood so I could head back to Port Zala and complete the last Item Creation upgrade quest. I also went around to the towns to see if there was any updated dialogue, but nada (thankfully).

What's been distracting me from finishing it off the last couple days is AV Hanafuda Club on Famicom. I got it as a gift from a friend, and before I even played it, I decided I should convert my previous FAQ for another Hacker International Hanafuda game to cover this one since I figured it wouldn't be too hard, and I wanted to help the NES/Famicom FAQ completion project on GameFAQs (especially since I was the one that got the game added to the database, contributing to their backlog of games to cover). It's a little more work than I expected since AV Hanafuda Club not only has Koi-Koi but also another game that appears to roughly be Hana-awase. I had to take the time out to learn that whole new style of game and all of its combinations.

Today:

LostWinds: Winter Of The Melodias - WiiWare
I'm now about 2 hours in - and only just got the ability I thought the whole game was about (from the reviews) - and the previous game only last 3-4 hours. Anyway, its great fun again, haven't met any truly great puzzles yet but this game is really really charming.

Ridge Racer Revolution - PS1 on PS3
The first time I've used my PS3's backwards compatibility and I got this because I've been loving this track on the iPhone version. First impressions are the iPhone game has far better graphics (even though it lacks the helicoptors/planes etc which are fantastic, as is the changing of the day throughout the intermediate course) and sound (although track 2 here is really good and the rest are just really funny). The main difference is that drifting in the iPhone game is a sheer joy but here i don't really get it so the only way I could beat the novice track was to drive normally in the 2nd car. The intermediate course was fantastic but so far I've only placed second. I'm trying hard to remember how far I got in the original Ridge Racer (when I played it on the PS2) but think I got to a one-on-one race or something, not sure.

Other games recently:

Bejeweled Blitz - iPhone

Forza 3 - Xbox 360

Project Gotham Racing 2 - Xbox (on X360)
Got this so I could DL the DLC before it goes offline but unfortunately the backwards compatibility isn't great - the screen is black on the car select screen. So i guess I won't buy it. However, the actual game looks and plays just like I remember it and has aged really well. If only I could select my car properly...

Fully! There have been two English language releases. A Korean/English version and a Chinese/English release. These two are far less common than the Japanese release though, and cost more - however, it is clearly marked on the front cover (a small box in the bottom left saying xxxxxx/English) so if you are buying online you can make sure you get the correct one. There is a full colour manual, over 10 pages all in English and the game features full English subtitles/menus/writing/everything. Some of it is a bit "engrish" but its all there and the story is really engrossing - and the game features a fish/discovery encycopaedia as well which may be of interest to you since you enjoyed Endless Ocean. The game is less focussed on the fish though and more about the story. The graphics are great, there is a full photo mode which stores pictures as jpgs, and the music is lovely and well-fitted as well. Given that the game has been fully translated into English (and not missing stuff like the recent news about Yakuza 3, grr) its quite surprising they didn't release it in any Western countries - at least the PS3 is region free.

Today's play:

LostWinds: Winter Of The Melodias - WiiWare
The game is getting quite good now. "Puzzles" which take quite a lot of elements to bring together, just like in the end stages of the first game. I've gained loads of new abilities - if they make a third game I don't think I'll be able to remember them all!

Dancing Lights - iPhone
Er, well, bought it because I saw it on Siliconera, but I don't really get it. Yes, the lights are colourful - but I've got TonePad which is a Tenori-on like sequencer for the iPhone and well, the relaxing music is okay but I can't be bothered to work out exactly how the game mechanics work which is a shame since the audiovisuals are so nice.

And of course, a bit more Bejeweled Blitz (and Wurdle) on the iPhone every now and then.

Wow, that title is a mouthful. But my pre-order for this (and Heavy Rain :) ) came in, a day before release date. Did the first 4 grand prixs as Sonic, my Avatar, Ryo and Ryo-forklift (the pre-order bonus). Glad I got the Ryo DLC because I don't know how to do all-star moves and Ryo in his forklift is so much cooler than Ryo on his mates motorcycle. Its a shame all the tracks are based around just 4 games (Sonic, Billy Hatcher (never played/know much about this one), House of the Dead, and Samba de Amigo). The tracks started off pretty dull but got pretty fun later on, there's still 2 grand prix to go so I'm expecting those tracks to be even better before delving into mission mode. The whole thing seems put together like OutRun 2006 but not as interesting. It all makes me want to get the HD version of Sonic Adventure. It would have been better to have tracks/music from the other games as well, especially since the trailer had Shenmue music. I would love a Space Channel 5 track/music to go with Ulala as well.

Whoohoo, after nearly a year and a half, I finally beat Infinite Undiscovery on Xbox 360. :) What a relief to get that monkey off my back. I still have the Seraphic Gate left to do, but I'll put that off till a later point in time, as has become my habit with tri-Ace's games in recent years (unfortunately, to be honest). Now I finally feel like I have a clean slate to start whatever I want on my home consoles. Having Infinite Undiscovery unfinished all this time kept me from doing as much gaming as I would've liked, I think, and I believe it's why I probably have mostly focused on handhelds since those are two separate realms of gaming for me. And I have some unfinished business on that end too, but for now I want to indulge in big screen gaming.

And things are especially great because I wrapped up with AV Hanafuda Club via Famicom emulation as well. I had to play it so much it made me want to barf, but I'm proud of the FAQ I was able to produce.

Even before I finished those, I was planning for my next game. I wanted something with some action, lots of instant gratification, but also not too hard to make progress in. I decided I was hankering for a 3D platformer, but not one too modern. N64 fit the bill, and I ended up choosing Donkey Kong 64. I never played it more than maybe half an hour before, and while plenty of people would advise me to stay away from it, so far I'm having fun, after beating the first boss and collecting everything with Donkey and Diddy in the first level. I'm not too terribly adverse to the idea of collecting lots of junk, so hopefully I'll enjoy the game. Whether I do or don't, I figure it's something I need to play given my immense love for the Donkey Kong Country games.

Heavy Rain - PS3
So, for the first hour or so I was like - well, its like a HD Farenheit, with bad walking controls. But then it sucked me in and introduced some amazing scenes. I think Cage should get away from the few references to paranormal/sci-fi as I didn't like that but when this game works, it really works. I can't wait to get on and see more of the plot unfold. The "QTEs" as people put it are far from that and can really engage you in the action that is taking place. I'll try not to write anything here that can be a spoiler so will shut up now.

Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing With Banjo-Kazooie - Xbox 360
Well, did the last 2 grand prix and the credits rolled - so started on the mission mode. They are a bit repetitive but get you do play as characters I wouldn't have tried otherwise. Although this mode has been lacking in Ryo so far.

360--
--Finished ep.1 of the Penny Arcade game yesterday. Really like the battle system they got going on...keeps you on your toes. Gonna get Ep.2 at some point in the distant future.
--Mushihimesama Futari, which is absolutely amazing and fun.

SNES--
Just got a system for the first time in a few years and I've vowed to go through some of the classics on it. I've started and played through a lot of SMW, LTTP, Super Metroid, and Yoshi's Island, but haven't actually beat any of them. So I decided to do just that.

I've started with Yoshi's Island. Holy sweet jesus, this game looks freaking incredible on the SNES. I played most of it on the GBA and the colors were not nearly as rich and nice. I think it's hands down the best looking game on the system, if not the best looking 16-bit game on any system (any takers to that challenge?) Helps that it's ton of fun too...the star/flower/red coin collectibles in every stage cater to my OCD.

Heavy Rain - PS3
So I started and couldn't really remember they story immediately before the point I was at - why do so few games offer a story recap? Anyway, then I got horrendously stuck on one trial and didn't know what to do/it wasn't doing what I thought it was meant to do and then eventually it said I'd failed. And then on the next scene the game froze twice and I had to reset. At this point I wasn't enjoying it at all - but I pressed on and, well, just wow. Again, I had an amazing game experience. The game makes you feel the weight of your actions (both physical, with the control system working so well) and mental. I left the game at a shocking event, made especially shocking due to my choices a couple of scenes earlier. Yes, this game has some bad "Quantic Dream" typical moments but overall it is utterly amazing so far and draws you in hugely. I also like the way it unlocks bonus art/videos along the way as I like watching those after a long session.

Modern Warfare 2, Halo 3 and Star Wars: TFU. I can't believe I'm finally doing good in MW2. No more multi negative games--I'm finally going positive like in Halo 3.

Heavy Rain - PS3
Reached the end of the story today. This game is simply amazing. Along the way today there was an extremely hard moral decision I spent a long time agonising over, some really fraught moments, a plot twist I just didn't see coming and then the end sequence. Well, I didn't get what one would call a "happy" ending (I hear there are 22 possible endings!) but after reading about other people's endings it does seem to suit my decisions along the way (apart from one part of it which was due to my failure - but I have to live with that - you have to make split-second reactions/decisions and if you fail - you fail. In this videogame - you are not always the master hero but can fail as well, then you, or others, have to live, or die, with the consequences. I've been enjoying reading discussion on the net about this game and also reading about the different decisions/failures and different endings that there are.

I believe I'm up to 80-some golden bananas in Donkey Kong 64 on Nintendo 64 now, with around 13 hours on the clock. There have been a couple moments where it felt a little tiresome, but overall I'm still having fun. It's kind of daunting just how much is still ahead of me, though. I have all five Kongs now, but I haven't even beaten the third stage. This is definitely one lengthy platformer. Although, to be honest, it doesn't feel like much of a platformer since there are so few parts that rely on real platforming, but I don't think any other genre would really suit it. I had one strange experience with the game. I was just walking around with Donkey Kong in Frantic Factory, literally doing nothing but walking, and for no reason the game freezes. I couldn't do anything at all, and when I hit reset, the screen went black but the game wouldn't restart. Weirdness. I had to manually turn off and back on the system. I've never had that happen with any other N64 game, and my system and games are very clean. Thank goodness the game automatically saves frequently, so I don't think I lost anything.

LostWinds: Winter Of The Melodias - WiiWare

Since Heavy Rain is complete and I'll wait till Friday to get the whole DLC pack (not because I'm scared of turning on the PS3, I have a slim, and turned it on to use PlayTV) I went back to finish this off. Some cool new gameplay elements once again. I did get stuck at one point and after ages of faffing about finding no solution had to resort to gamefaqs. Turned out the solution was something not ever used before and I would never have thought of doing it. However, that move has to be used in the final boss "battle" - which was suitably ace and involved lots of complex stringing things together - whilst trying hard to maintain your health. Another game finished! Although I am missing three "secrets" and some of those other hidden things. Maybe I should go back to Nyxquest now - although that doesn't have the charm of the LostWinds games.

Oh, and I played a ton of Bejeweled Blitz on the iPhone as usual.

Loaded my character in Fallout 3. Game is starting to get boring now. Stopped playing.

Started a new character in Crisis Core Final Fantasy 7. Also still playing Champions Return to Arms and WWE SvR 2010 somewhat.
