Last night I tried a bit of two football games on the GameCube. One was NFL 2K3...is it just me or is it practically impossible to set playks in that game? You have to use the left stick and push up to do that but it doesn't want to go up high enough.

I can comment on this because I played A LOT of NFL 2K3 on all three systems (Cube, XBox, PS2). It was my preferred version because I hated the ridiculously high rate of interceptions in 2K5 and the screwed up control scheme of 2K4.

Playks? Do you mean "plays"?

Yes, it is a little difficult on the Gamecube version.

Ever played NFL 2K2 on the Dreamcast? It was equally difficult to choose plays in that particular version, especially if time was running out (i.e. 2-minute drill) and you had to do it in a hurry.

Funny thing is in the first two NFL 2K games (2K and 2K1) for Dreamcast, you were able to choose plays using either the D-Pad or the analog stick.

But when NFL 2K2 was released for Dreamcast, you could no longer choose your plays using the D-Pad. Just the analog stick and it was very touchy. So it was possible to occasionally choose the wrong play, especially if you were in a hurry.

Yet if you ever play any of the earlier NFL 2K games on PS2 or XBox 1, meaning NFL 2K2 and 2K3 in particular, it was a lot easier to choose plays with the analog stick(s) for the Playstation and original XBox.

Recently I've been playing:

-MLB 2005 (PS2): Several games in a row on a Baltimore Orioles season I recently started. I'm using the stock 2004 Orioles roster instead of a fantasy draft. Good game, but it is a little disconcerting getting 20 hits per game (on average) considering this is the first time I've ever played it. Default difficulty. Might have to up it, but I've also been giving up a lot of runs so far when pitching. So I need to tweak carefully.

My record is 4-3 so far, 1.5 games behind the Yankees for first place. Even though I am getting a lot of hits, I'm not scoring an insanely high number of runs. But for realism and authenticity, I still don't want to have a bunch of guys with .450 batting averages and seven or eight guys with 200+ hits when the season is over.

-NFL Gameday 2002 (PS2): Several games in a row of a Dallas Cowboys "franchise/GM" mode. Off to a 4-0 start on default difficulty. But I am barely winning the games, so the difficulty is just right. Before the season, I traded the Dallas starting quarterback (Quincy Carter) to the Bengals for Akili Smith to use as a back-up.

Signed a street free agent named "John Halper" as my new starting quarterback, 3/4 of the free agents in the game are fictional players with fake names including this player. He was the highest rated free agent QB and also had a higher rating than Carter. Created yet another quarterback with below average skills to give me 4 on my depth chart, one of which is Anthony Wright who was already on the team and who I chose to keep on my roster.

-NFL Gameday 2002

Is this game as sloppy as Gameday 2001? Oh man, all I could do was stare in awe as my QB threw the ball over his shoulder for 40+ yds while running towards the screen. My favorite is being on defense; when you would hit the button to jump for the interception, everybody on your team -no matter where they're at- would simultaneously jump with you. Good times...

Never played Gameday 2001. I own nearly all of the PS1 & PS2 NFL Gameday's, with 2001 being one of the few exceptions.

However, I've never seen any of THOSE glitches you're describing in Gameday 2002, so I'd say Sony/989 Sports managed to correct those after the 2001 edition.

Gameday 2002 was like the third or fourth best football game that year. But it still isn't that bad of a game. The computer opponent/AI playcalling on offense is actually inspired, compared to some other football games from that time.

Plus unlike Madden 2002 and NFL 2K2, you can't call Dime and Nickel plays all the time and still stop any and all running plays short of a quarterback sneak.

If you want to do it in Gameday 2002, you actually have to call a genuine "run defense" compatible formation and play. Call a bunch of Dime and Nickel plays in Gameday 2002 if the computer decides to run the ball and you'll be giving up a lot of yards on the ground.

Defending against the pass sucks, which is a common theme in the NFL Gameday series. However, getting a quarterback sack in Gameday 2002 is more satisfying than getting sacks in that year's Madden or 2K.

I always got my fix with NFL 2K1 back then (not a fan of sports sims nowadays). Upon hearing of how broken GD 2001 was, I just had to get it to see for myself. Found it for cheap, took it home and had many laughs (the football looking like it was constructed out of Cocoa Puffs was a huge plus for me)!

Finally decided what to spend those 600 Wii points I had sitting around on, and picked one kinda out of left field:

Art Style: Light Trax

Tron light cycles meets Rez. Good electronic tunes and a fun, simple concept. I had considered importing this back on the GBA when it was called dotstream (part of the bit generations series). Glad I waited, love the "into the screen" transitions.

It was between this and Splatterhouse, and honestly I think I'll get more use out of Light Trax.

I've been playing Nier (PS3) for a good part of yesterday and today. Despite the fact that the game has some major flaws, I'm still finding it rather enjoyable.

I also have Simon's Quest and Addams Family Values on the back burner, Nier seems pretty short since it seems I'm already half way through, so I'll try and focus more on them when I'm done.

Back then, I also played NFL 2K1 nonstop. I thought the 2K games were the best football game on the market each year up until 2004.

I also heard stories about how lousy Gameday was that year (2001), which is one of the reasons I never picked it up. Then again, none of the PS2 Gameday's ever received good reviews.

Personally the best edition of Gameday to get from the 2000's is probably NFL Gameday 2005 for PS1, because it was the final first party game by Sony for the system so it is cool to have for curiosity's sake. Not because it is fun to play (even though truthfully it is just as good as any of the other PS1 Gameday's).

However, the franchise mode on it is pretty much unplayable because it requires a FULL 1 MB just to save.

If you want a football game for cheap laughs, I'd suggest ESPN NFL Primetime 2002 for PS2 or Xbox. When guys get tackled, they moan like they are drowning underwater.

You also get a shitload of Chris Berman's cheesy ESPN cliches ("he could go ALL the waaaay") because he is on commentary. On defense, the slightest contact with a wide receiver will net you a pass interference penalty, unless you lower the penalty slider(s).

That game has sliders for just about everything from blocking, tackling and interceptions to passing speed and catching. If you get the sliders "just right" (which requires some trial and error), it is actually a pretty good and balanced football game. Unfortunately the default settings and sliders are awful which is why the game was roasted in every single review when it first came out.

Animal Crossing: City Folk (Wii)

I played the game *briefly* when I got home from work. One of the townsfolk left a message for my gf to give me, so I had to see them.

I also got my golden watering can for the town being perfect. (Thank goodness for my gf, because it would be weed infested like my Gamecube town was if it was up to me!)

I also (unsuccessfully) tried to get my golden axe. I guess if I want some Golden Axe, I need to fire up my Genesis, huh?

Grand Theft Auto Episodes From Liberty City. Replaying all the missions in The Ballad of Gay Tony to get 100% on all missions. Getting the time completion is the hardest, especially when doing the helicopter missions.

After playing GTA4 again I can't help but once again mention what a huge disappointment Red Dead Redemption was. While it's a great game, it's really lacking gameplay other than the multiplayer. The game is more like GTA Lite. Atleast Red Dead Redemption didn't take eight games before getting one good release though. :P

On SMT Nocturne I'm at the Diet Building. Just fought a few bosses without saving and then I got screwed at Samael when my character was charmed for eight turns in a row. Being a physical build, including Magatama, my attack was full and very high agility. My character killed one of my allies off each turn and then survived five more turns before getting killed by Samael. Eight turns of being charmed is bullshit though.

Nothing played today, but last night....oh, boy....last night...

Rock Band 2 (Wii): I played the hell out of this one. I even broke out the microphone and wailed through some songs I don't know all that well! I moved on to a different Rock Band....

Beatles Rock Band (Wii): I didn't play this one quite as long, but still had a good time for a few songs.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Arcade Game (NES): I played this one until the third stage. I decided to call it a night once I had to continue twice and it put me at the beginning of the stage!

I'm thinking of getting Rock Band: Lego (Wii) today. I got my X-mas money early and can do whatever I want with it! :)

I need to start posting these the day I play them!

I got my hands on Lego Rock Band (Wii) yesterday and proceeded to play it most of the day! I do not see where the graphics are as horrible as reviewers have said. I do understand what they mean about the repetitive nature of the songs. I played a song then a mystery setlist and ended up playing the same song twice in a row!

I almost picked up Data East Arcade Classics (Wii) instead, because I was simply shocked the Gamestop here had it despite the website saying the closest one to have it was like 20 miles away! I thought about it, though, and realized with Burgertime and Burnin' Rubber (the arcade version of Bump N Jump) being the only two games I REALLY wanted, I didn't think the $20 price tag justified it over Lego Rock Band.

It has become an obsession to try to unlock everything I can in the game. I have found use for the "Short Song Mode" when it comes to songs I don't have any interest in playing. I broke out the microphone and did some pretty surreal renditions of songs I did NOT know well enough to try to sing.

Jackal on NES which is quite addictive

Yes, it is. There was a few month period during my youth where that was my "current favorite NES game."

This week?

I've started a Pittsburgh Pirates Franchise in Major League Baseball 2K9 for Playstation 2. Picked up the game brand new for $10 at a "dollar store", of all places, one of those ones where not everything in the store is a dollar but most of the things are.

My roster was cooked up with a fantasy draft. Because I was a little slow to select an "ace" starting pitcher, my #1 starter is Bartolo Colon. Good grief. But hey, at least I got a pretty solid bullpen and offense.

Most piss poor game manual you will ever see, aside from PS2's MLB 2K10 perhaps, and the game was thrown together by 2K China using the previous year's edition (or perhaps 2K7) since PS2 is no longer a priority but the game is surprisingly fun.

For awhile there, I hadn't done much of any gaming, but now I'm heavily back into it, mostly due to Solatorobo: Sore kara Coda e for DS. After having the game in my possession for over a month, I'm finally able to play it, but no thanks to Deal Extreme. My replacement screen took about a month to arrive, and the dang thing showed up broken. It's been at least a couple weeks since then, and the second one is yet to show up. But now, luckily, I'm able to borrow a DS Lite, and I've been having a blast.

I've already racked up about 20 hours in Solatorobo, which I've heard is roughly the length of the game, but I'm notoriously pokey so who know how close to the end I really am. It's amazing the amount of love and care that went into the game. It's really obvious that CyberConnect 2 wanted this game to celebrate their 15th anniversary and bring them back to their very first project, with a follow-up that's been dreamed up for 10 years, with a several years struggle to get the go-ahead, and 3 years of earnest development. I would easily say it has the most impressive graphics I've seen on DS, and the music is fantastic too. I also liked the tunes in Tail Concerto, as innocuous as they are, but, man, has the composer blossomed since then. Nobuteru Yuuki's art is for the franchise is better than ever too. But all that is nothing compared to how fresh, varied, and satisfying the gameplay is. It's too easy, but that's the only thing I could hold against the game. It's completely lived up to all my hopes for the franchise. It'll be a damn shame if the game never gets a US release, and an even bigger shame if it does but gets rejected because people just think "lol furries" when they see it. And it'll probably be from the same gamers that love Sonic and Star Fox. As they would say in Solatorobo (since all the voice snippets are in French), c'est la vie.

Beyond that, I also played a bunch of random quiz/board games on Wii at a friend's house, and I've been trying out some recent purchases. I gave Lunar: Silver Star Harmony and Mimana: Iyar Chronicle a go on PSP and both games in Dragon Warrior I & II for Game Boy Color.

Hah, Solatorobo for DS totally faked me out. It was building up to the final battle, mirroring the events in Tail Concerto in many ways, it had a big, epic fight against the character that was the main antagonist through the game, then everything seemed safe and happy, and the credits rolled. I knew something was up, though, when I realized that I had yet to meet a few of the characters featured on the site and in the art book, and then after the credits were over a mysterious scene played. I got kicked back to the title screen, but upon opening the "cleared" data file, the game basically starts anew. Now the real threat is revealed, the title screen looks different, there's a new anime intro, and the chapters began all over, this time as story 2. Heck, I would've been fully satisfied even if that was the real ending, but having the game continue is like icing on the cake. It'll be interesting to see how long this portion lasts. I'm already nearly at 25 hours.

I did some more random game testing too. I pulled out the Game Gear for Halley Wars, Columns, and Shinobi, and then I popped Metal Gear Solid into my Game Boy Advance SP.

Again, this is from last night:

Super Mario Bros All Stars (Wii)

I decided to give the Classic Controller a try to see if that made a difference. It definitely did! I fired up Super Mario Bros 2 first and picked up where I left off at World 3. I made it to 3-3 and tried my luck on the ladders and chains. Princess Peach stayed on them like she was supposed to! I am a bit disappointed that I couldn't play using the Wiimote, but am glad that it works at least.

I find myself trying to do the tricks in the videos released on the 25th Anniversary website, but find myself failing miserably!

(Edit: Wow, I finally made it to my 200th post. Only took 6 years to make it to Level 1!!!)

I'm up to Mau in Solatorobo for DS, which I believe is the 4th chapter of the second half. The part without the Dahak robo was pretty depressing, so I'm glad it's back and the game's returned to its cheerful self.

I also tried out a couple Nintendo 64 imports I picked up - Kiratto Kaiketsu! 64 Tanteidan and 64 Trump Collection: Alice no Waku Waku Trump World. The first is a disposable party game, but 64 Trump Collection is surprisingly fun. Sure is a hell of a lot better than the other N64 import of Bottom Up's that I own, Onegai Monsters. It's pretty basic, just loads of different card games using the standard 52-card deck with an Alice in Wonderland theme. It's got a big selection of games and a really cute story-mode, and I think it's interesting that it used the whole storybook, paper cut-outs on 3D landscapes style long before Paper Mario.

Then I did some MAME gaming with family. I joined in for The Simpsons arcade game and Risky Challenge and possibly some other stuff that's slipping my mind.

I didn't get in much gaming time over Christmas, but hopefully I can pick it up now. I just finished the main events of chapter 5 (story 2) in Solatorobo for DS. I still have to finish the extra quests, though. I got over 30 hours on the clock now. I've actually heard of people beating the full game, both stories, with all the quests completed, in 20 hours, but I don't know how they're pulling that off. Must be skipping through the text super fast and not exploring as thoroughly as I am.

I started to get into my Christmas gifts a little too. For Nintendo 64, I popped in Pokemon Snap and Mega Man 64. Pokemon Snap is pretty addictive. I quickly racked up 50 different photographed Pokemon. This game really takes me back, even though I never played it before. It was right around this release that I became disenchanted with Nintendo. Not because they were releasing bad games or anything, but because Pokemania was at its fever pitch. Nintendo Power basically become Pokemon Power, since it was overloaded with Pokemon comics, cards, fan art, coverage, feedback, etc. Having not played a single Pokemon game at the time, I decided to finally let my subscription run out. Now I can look at that period in a whole new light and appreciate the games I missed out on.

As for Mega Man 64, I'm not going to seriously get into it now because with Solatorobo I'm already getting my fill of this kind of game. In fact, I had been considering finally playing Mega Man Legends 2, but Solatorobo nixed those plans too. Maybe when the mood strikes, I'll replay Mega Man Legends via Mega Man 64 and then follow with the sequel. Anyway, the PlayStation and Nintendo 64 are kind of frustrating systems. The hardware has both pros and cons, in almost opposite ways, which is nice in terms of balance, but when you can play a game on both, you wish you can combine the best traits of both. I love how smooth Mega Man 64 looks, far less twitchy and jagged, but I also miss the sharper textures of the PlayStation original. Neither is really a clear victor.

I also played a little bit of Puyo Pop Fever for GameCube, beating the standard difficulty mode.

More Solatorobo on DS and more game testing. Well, very little of Solatorobo actually, since I'm still completing the quests at the end of chapter 5 (in story 2).

As for testing, I tried out all of my Secret Santa Dreamcast games: Carrier, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, NCAA College Football 2K2, NFL 2K2, Phantasy Star Online Ver. 2, Quake III Arena, Tee Off, and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. It amused me to discover that Tee Off is yet another game by that goofy developer Bottom Up, creators of Onegai Monsters and 64 Trump Collection. I don't know why I'm taking an interest in them since they aren't exactly the best developer out there, but it's a funny coincidence that I got another of their games so soon. On PlayStation, I popped in Tiger Woods 99 PGA Tour Golf, but I liked Tee Off better.

I also dug out my PC-FX to try some games I recently imported: Arubarea no Otome, Fire Woman Matoi-gumi, and Last Imperial Prince. They're all pretty good, but I don't have much patience for wading through more text-heavy Japanese games at the moment while I'm deep into Solatorobo. Last Imperial Prince was the most interesting since it has the most action. The sprites are kind of wonky, as is the battle system, but as I got a little farther in the game, I started to really appreciate the mechanics as it grew more complex. I can definitely see myself playing through this whole game in the future since I love me a good side-scrolling adventure game.

*hears crickets chirping* Slow in here, ain't it? Somebody is gonna have to post c-c-c-combo breaker after this, haha. Anyway, I'm up to the last chapter of story 2 in Solatorobo on DS, which should be the last chapter period. I won't be quite done after that, though. I need to get Wi-Fi going on the DS to download all the quests that have been made available. There are already seven of them up, I believe. I feel really fortunate to be getting them at all since I was convinced that they wouldn't be accessible outside of Japan or without a DSi.

I finally beat Solatorobo on DS, and what a remarkable game it was. It may have taken 10 years to get this game, but it was worth every bit of the wait. I still haven't downloaded the quests that are available, but that's becoming such a pain that I may just go to a McDonalds for the free Wi-Fi. The DS Lite isn't detecting any access points here. I'm guessing we're probably using WPA encryption, and I know no one would want me to switch it to crappier WEP. I'd get that dongle that Nintendo made if they hadn't discontinued it so long ago. In the meantime, I can work on completing the boss rush missions.

I also decided to beat Pokemon Snap since, during my trying it out, I racked up over 50 Pokemon, which I then learned was only about 10 away from having them all. What an odd number for the game to contain. I figured it would have all 151, but in lieu of that, why not thrown in one more to make it 64 to match with the system? I had a hard time figuring out how to hit that last switch, but it was smooth sailing after that. I have to admit that I did look up some info and did learn some stuff from my fiance's sister. That's another problem with the lack of all 151. There's no way to know which you're missing, so it can be pretty random to find some, like Dugtrio and Muk. Other than snapping Mew and collecting them all, I'm also trying to beat the challenge scores. I've beaten all but Rainbow Cloud's. My overall point total in the game is just over 240,000, but that's nothing compared to the crazy, obsessive bastards that have gotten over 300,000, haha.

Borderlands. For an FPS it's fairly good and has that same unique feel that Fallout 3 carries. The thing about it is that it does get repetitive fairly quickly as you're killing enemies that are way too similar. There's never a lot of enemies at a time and it feels pretty barren, much like on Fallout 3. Other than that the mechanics are good and the loot drops getting more powerful equipment, etc is pretty cool.

The skill system really seems like an afterthought though. Playing as the soldier, the one cannon as the special ability has shields that really doesn't do much to protect you when all enemies shoot over it and the damage it does is so minimal. Upgrading it obviously makes it better, but still seems it was tacked on.

The last thing I didn't like about it is the vehicles. This is actually the same thing I didn't like about Brutal Legend. You have a large world and one type of gameplay and the vehicle is so overpowered that it takes away from the standard gameplay. You don't have to use the vehicle if you don't want to, but the area that is available once you get the vehicle is so large and enemies are so few and far between that you'll be traveling on foot quite a distance before seeing other enemies.

I beat the challenge score for Rainbow Cloud in Pokemon Snap for Nintendo 64, so with nothing left to do short of attempting to improve scores for no real reason, I'm retiring the game to the drawer for now.

I unfortunately haven't been able to do much in Solatorobo on DS. I went to a McDonalds, one that said it had Wi-Fi on the site, and I couldn't connect to the stinkin' service. So now onto plan, uh, C? I did beat the first boss rush mission, and I made one attempt on the second boss rush. Like the first one, though, it'll take some practice to refresh my memory and master the patterns.
